Title: Aramoho Wanganui *COMPLETED*
Post by: shikyna on Thursday 16 July 09 09:46 BST (UK)
Hi there

I am currently writing a book on Aramoho, Wanganui NZ and am very interested in any families living there previous to 1920. I am especially interested in any photographs that depict family life, and any stories from that time of life in Aramoho/or

Alternatively, if you have family you are trying to find, I may have come across them and am very willing to help.

Cheers, Shikyna  :)

Hi Shikyna

... and Welcome to RootsChat.    :)

Your willingness to help others in trying to find their Wanganui families, is a lovely gesture, which will be very much appreciated, I'm sure.

In case you haven't already found it, the PapersPast website might be of some assistance to you, with all the online newspapers, now "fully searchable".

Best of luck with your book.   :)

Hi Shikyna,
I am researching Barron and Booth families that lived in Aramoho 1910-1920.
Four Booth children Thelma, Vera (Olga), Gordon and Arthur born between 1910/20.
Thelma married (1935) Robert Barron who arrived with his mother Janet Barron (buried Aramoho) possibly before 1920.
Any information much appreciated.
Thanks  :)

Hello Shikyna,
My husband's grandfather Frank Raymond ROSSITER was born  in Aramoho in 1919, but unfortunately I don't have anything to share with you about the town or the family at that time.  His birth certificate lists his father as George William Rossiter, a Driver.  The family moved about a bit- Franks sister was born in Hamilton 3 years previous, and the next after Frank was born in Ohakune in 1921.

I wish you well with your writings and if you do come across the Rossiters I'd be very happy to hear from you.

Hello,

I have two families in this area, but unfortunately can not tell you anything about the area - just names and dates.

1. Crutchley, William, (1852 - 1926), a bootmaker, marr 2nd Grace McCartney
     had 9 children
2. Calman, Nelson Bruce, (1892-1950), a carpenter, marr Vera Fawcett, had
    4 children.

Regards,
Jean

Hi Jean

The Calman name is well-known in Wanganui. George Calman had one of the early general stores and William Calman was a cabinetmaker and undertaker. IT would seem that Nelson may be a son of William or possibly a younger brother. Do you have any idea if either of the above might be possible?

There was a W Crutchley who owned the Liverpool Variety Store around 1903. He advertised that he sold fruit and stationery and cleaned, dyed and coloured feathers! It is not a very common name. There is a Steve Crutchley, racehorse trainer at Aramoho still. I am very interested in this Crutchley as there was a bootmaker's at Aramoho that I do not know much about.

Thanks for this information.

Hi there - the Rossiters seemed to have been better known in Taranaki. I will keep my ear to the ground for you but this is not a name which has yet rung a bell!

Cheers and thanks for the interest.

Many thanks.  As I said, it was only because the town appears on the birth certificate.  No idea how long they might have been there.

Appreciate your reply,
Sandie

Hello again,

1. Nelson Bruce CALMAN, born 6 March 1892, was the first child of William CALMAN and Jane BRUCE.  I am interested in this family because my great aunt, Vera Ruth Jane FAWCETT married Nelson CALMAN 27 March 1918.

2. William CRUTCHLEY was born 1852, probably Northamptonshire, and married Eliza BARBER there. They emigrated to Christchurch, Canterbury, where both his wife and one child died. The other child (Annie CRUTCHLEY) seems to have been taken in by the maternal BARBER granparents, and William went to Auckland, where he married Grace McCARTNEY, 28 July 1883, and then I next find these two in Wanganui. And, Yes, William CRUTCHLEY was always listed as a boot maker or boot finisher.

Regards,
Jean

Hi Jean

I will look in the heritage room when I go up next. There might be a photo of William's business. Have you accessed PapersPast which will give you ads from the era.

Hi,
I have family from the Aramoho area. The ANDREW family went there after they were in the Ashurst area.
My Great Grandfather William Jeffery Andrew was a headmaster at Wanganui East, I do have a few photos, but they would be a bit later (1930s) but have a family photo of the Andrew family before Leslie Wilton Andrew went to WW1. I believe most of the family is buried at the Aramoho cemetery.

Hi,

Go to the Wanganui Library and read "A history of the Fowlers - Gloucestershire - New Zealand 1520-1986".  Some lived in Aramoho and are buried there.  The authoress, now a very elderly lady, has many memories of the family there. She still lives at the same address as in the book.

Cheers

Hi tracn4,
Henry and Selina married in 1869, folio 0488.

A Henry Signal died 1926 aged 87 yrs and is buried at Mt View Cemetery, Marton (which is near Wanganui) record# 389.
You can check here for further details http://www.rangdc.govt.nz/index.php/cemeteries

Selina died 1910 aged 59 and is buried at same place.

Not sure what help you require, but suggest you start a new thread with your request.

Cheers

Hi Paul. My apologies. I did email the friend and I had forgotten about it to chase him up. Unfortunately the archivist at the Wanganui Museum has not been appointed so I cannot get in there. I suggest you write to the Heritage Room. Wanganui Public Library, Queen's Park. Wanganui and ask them. They are very helpful and have members who are only to happy to look things up. I expect there will be a family file there which they can photocopy and send you.

I have chased the friend up again so keep harassing me! ;D

Cheers

Mackiwi, suicides were buried in the main cemetery. They were never buried outside the grounds as in other places. If there is someone you want to find I can ask the archivist. Sorry I missed this somehow when you posted it. Cheers Laraine

HI there - my advice to you is to write to the Heritage Room, WAnganui Library, Queens Park, Wanganui. They have family files. I found a George Henry Watson born London died 1908 and the marriage of William Henry Watson to Eliz Goslong of Wangani 1871. Are u sure iof the spelling of Abbott?

Hi there - I spoke to your cousin who said that a family history of the family has been written. Have you seen that? I did ask if I could borrow it in case you do not have it. Apparently there is an older woman relative in a nursing home in Wanganui who knows the family history?

am assuming you are in Aramoho and if so can I ring you as I am wanting to know about J W Morris Watson, registed fruit grower and horticulturalist on Brunswick Rd in the forties and possibly before. I am assuming that he was one of your lot?
Cheers

Yes JWM Watson was the husband of the lady liveing in the home and father of my cousins Keith /Loyd /and Valery Casely.
Can I assume it was Keith you talked to .???
Yes Morris Watson did own land on Brunswick road in many yrs ago ,and from what my late father told me,several af the glasshouses were shifted to what was to become ''Holly Lodge.

Paul

Hi there MacKiwi

I have found the paper reference, He was known as Francis Bail. I feel a bit dodgy about posting it in here but we are not allowed to give out emails so have done it as an attachment which makes it a bit more private. Now I have a name will contact the sexton. I know which part of the cemetery he will be buried in (just wrote a book on it) and if it lets me attach two things will send that as well. I might be able to find the grave if there are details, but not all the early graves have stones.

I am picking Francis would be to the right of the photograph as this is the earliest part and pic taken late seventies by memory

Clipping was from the Wellington Independent 3rd April 1871 and had been copied from the Wanganui Chronicle.

Cheers
Laraine

Hi Laraine,

Thats great, thank you. Don't worry about it being viewed by all Francis is well past caring. If it is possible to find the details of burial site I would really like to know. I would just like to know where the poor man is resting, hopefully at peace.

Mackiwi  :) :)

P S He was known by all those spellings depending on who was writing it down.

Hi, i'm wondering if you can help me out with any info on the MOORE family. Charles & Rose Moore lived in wanganui with there 7 children. Charles & Rose are buried at Aramoho Cemetery & i think 2 of their children are too. Charles & Rose nee schwass married in wanganui  around 1892, so i'm guessing that they lived there until they died, i could be wrong tho. Any info would be greatly appreciated. TIA
