I am trying to work out the relationship of Donald McIntosh (b 1819c) and May McBean (b 1816c) to my ancestor known variously as Mina McIntosh or Williamina (or Wilhelmina) Fullerton. Is anyone researching this family
-
While they lived in Dores and then Bona. Donald was born in Moy and May in Glasgow, her later siblings were born in Dores so were in the area from the mid 1820's (I expect the family returned there from Glasgow).

Hello
For others trying to help.
An IGI search only brings up one birth - an 'extracted' entry.
Mary McIntosh 01 MAY 1858 Dores, Inverness, Scotland.
Regards, Steve
An IGI 'submitted' entry has the couple marrying 22 MAR 1850 Dores, Inverness, Scotland
A question - I assume your Williamina was married - who does it have as her parents on her marriage/death entry?
-
If only it was that simple.
She is not Mary (nor her sisters, I have followed that line). Her marriage and death certificate lists fictious parents. In a poor relief application in 1883 she says was raised by May (McBean) and Donald McIntosh from the age of two. She does not appear in any of the census returns for that family.
Her first appearance is as a servant in a Glasgow household in 1881 aged roughly 21.

Have you got the family of Donald and May McIntosh on the censuses, to help place them regarding locations etc?
Monica :)
Added: Found Donald and May in 1861:
Donald McIntosh 43, Cross Cutter Sawyer b. Moy Inv.
May McIntosh 45, b. Glasgow
Margaret McIntosh 9 b. Cromarty, Ross
Elizabeth McIntosh 7 b. Cromarty, Ross
Mary McIntosh 2 b. Cromarty, Ross
Duncan Grant 10, nephew b. Dores
Mary Grant 34, sister in law b. Dores
Donald McBean 43, brother in law b. Glasgow
And this is the one you referred to as the first sighting of Mina in 1881:
Thomas Richmond 35, Medical Profession General Practitioner b. ?
Anna E Richmond 24 b. Inverness
Thomas H Richmond 2 b. Jamaica (British Subject), Kingston
Mina McIntosh 21, domestic servant b. Glasgow
Address: 2 Windsor Terrace, Kelvin Glasgow

Just in case it might be relevant, what were the names she quoted for the two sets of parents on her registrations? What did it show on her poor relief application regarding parents and also place of birth?
Sorry about all the questions :P
-
She has an illegitimate son ( the result of a broken promise by a highlander working as a policeman in Govan. in 1883 (hence the reason for the poor application) She gives her name as Williamina McIntosh (signs with a cross).
Her parents are given as Donald McIntosh and Mary Stewart. But that from the age of two she was raised by May and Donald McIntosh.
The poor relief application lists where she has lived and worked. The locations check out but no sign of her in the 1871 census.
She marries John Hunter in 1888 and her name is now Wilhelmina Fullerton the daughter of James Fullerton (an engine driver) and Mary McIntosh.

Oh Lordy! The info is that diverse :'(
How have you linked the names of May and Donald to the family in Dores? Was there any other info on the forms or was it just that they are the only couple showing with those names?
I'm not surprised you are banging your head on this one!
Monica

And this is Mina now married in 1891:
John Hunter 41
Wilhelmina Hunter 32 b. Inverness, Inverness-shire
David Headrick Hunter 2
Donald James McIntosh 7
Address: 15 James Pl, Govan
Different birth place and slightly older...
Still at the same address in 1901 with birth place and birth year as above.
I know you have all this shieldhall - just posting it all in the hope that someone has an inspired thought to be able to unravel all this ;)
-
Yes Monica
That is the family. It is very frustrating to have such detailed info but not be able to find birth details.
Fullerton was not common at all in Scotland at that period so where it came from I do not know I suspect it was spurious to hide the past. Dores was not that big population wise and there was only one couple with the combination of names, although no shortage of McIntosh's and McBean's. Though it appears just about all the siblings had no progeny.
The only other route is to see if the Kirk Session records have anything of what may have been a local scandal.

Wilhelmina McIntosh Fullerton (1859-08/02/1935) was my Great-Grandmother.
She was married to John Hunter on 20/04/1888 at 12 James Place, Govan and had five children
Donald McIntosh (1883-?)
David Hunter (1888-07/07/1970)
George Hunter (30/12/1894-12/10/1977)
Charles Gilmour Hunter (07/06/1897-03/11/1976)
Frederick Soutar (06/10/1902-15/07/1979)
She lived at 14 Hamilton Street, Govan at the time of her marriage
-
There was also a daughter Margaret born Govan 1900. She married Patrick Boyle.
Donald eventually took the name James McIntosh Hunter. He married Agnes Gillies and died in Glasgow in 1954.

Finally popped past Inverness to look up records. Staff very helpful but nothing in the Kirk Session records. a massive gap in minutes (not missing pages but 20 years lapse in the book). Nothing mentioned in the 1883 period.
I have discovered that one Daughter of May and Donald, Mary MacKintosh (b 1858) married John Urquhart (b 1857c) in Inverness. She died in Inverness in 1929.
-
Re' Fullerton/Fullarton, an Ayrshire name also Angus. Common enough in Glasgow.
Skoosh.

I guess you already have this from Dores, doesn't help much with Mina
In memory of Donald McIntosh, Shepherd who died at Antfield Hill 10th Feb 1840 aged 72 years. Also Elizabeth McPherson, his wife who died 3rde March 1832 aged 65 years. And their sons John aged 84, Donald McIntosh, Aldourie died 15th May 1897 aged 78 years. And of his beloved wife May McBean who died 12th Aug 1911. And their daughters Margaret who died 12th Oct 1912, Elizabeth who died 20th Dec 1918.

Thanks.
No I did not have this info from the MI. Can you tell me which cemetery it is from? I suspect my ancestor may be a McBean as she had at least one sister Mary (b 1827c) who had a son in 1851c Duncan Grant. I can trace him up to 1901 but he never married. It may be this Mary or another sister had Mina. There is no trace of a husband in the census records for Mary. So much information for such a brick wall!

Its from Dores Burial Ground
