I dont have the MI's but I think you will need to supply some dates to enable someone to do a search.

Oh sorry, never thought about that.....

Joseph Davidson his wife, Mary (Scott) Davidson (no date of death)
Margaret (Davidson) Smart died 1866
Alexander Smart
Robert Davidson Gray died 1905 & his wife Agnes Aitchison Gray) (no date of death)
Robert Gray son of above (no date of death)
James Nairn died 1870 & Margaret (Robertson) Nairn died 1876

I'll have to do a little more research to see if I can find dates of death for those I don't currently have.

Alternatively if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where I can purchase a copy of Coldingham's MI's so I can buy one.  Thanks.

The only one I can find in Coldingham pre 1855 M.I's [it does have some later dates as you can see] -

Obelisk: [although this is an obelisk there doesn't appear to be any other deaths recorded on the other areas. 'James Nairn 25.2.1870 89yrs. wife Margaret Robertson 12.1.1876 85yrs. dau Jane -.2.1842 16yrs'

I will have a look at neighbouring areas but perhaps some of them will be too recent to be entered.

Thanks for that Excel.  Appreciate it.  I think I'm going to have a trip up next month for a cemetery run  :)

Joseph must died between 1851 and 1861 as Mary was living in Boggan, Coldingham with her son. Robert in 1861. As Mary was a pauper they perhaps couldn't afford to have a stone erected.
Can't see Mary in 1871 census so perhaps she died between 1861 and 71.
Had a look for Alexander Smart but if Margaret [Davidson] Smart was his wife I don't think I have found the correct one in the census as his wife was still alive up to 1881.
Still can't find them in the M.I's!

I see you have Broomfields in your family names. They didn't come from Chirnside by any chance?

Hi Excel - with regard to Broomfield, Robert Davidson & Agnes (Aitchison) Gray's daughter Isabella married a John Broomfield.  Not sure where he came from but his parents were James Broomfield and Euphemia Playfair.  Isabella & John must have settled in Preston, Berwickshire as that's where their 4 children were born.

It's heartbreaking to think there's no headstone to mark a grave but I guess it was quite common all those years ago if you didn't have the money, doesn't make it any easier tho'.

Alexander Smart's first wife died before 1863 so looks like it's another Alexander Smart.  Thanks for looking for me, appreciate it. :)

Re the Broomfields, James & Euphemia Playfair married 1858 Eccles according to LDS & Euphemia born Eccles 1833, the only John found was Kelso but as he dosn't show up on FreeCen that could be wrong.

According to his son's marriage cert. in 1900, James was a Joiner and deceased, whist Euphemia was still alive, John could have been born Eccles in 1867 (don't have a census) in 1900 living Preston as Master Joiner.

You will find that Mary Davidson, maiden surname Scott, died in 1867. I found it on Scotland's People free search. You will have to buy credits to view it. Can't find Joseph so expect he must have died pre 1855.
Unfortunately I haven't come across your Broomfield names in my research.

I'd taken some random photo's of headstones whilst at Coldingham Priory last month, of any with Nairn, Davidson & Robertson on them.  I was just having a look thru' them and haven't I got the headstone for Robert Davidson Gray, his wife Agnes Aitchison and their son Hugh aged 16 months.

I also took one of a "James Nairn McDougall (MD JP) Born 10/10/1839 Died 12/10/1911 for 48 years the beloved physician in this district."  Assume he must be a relation but at the moment can't work out who he'd have belonged to.  More digging to do.

Hi,
I'm chipping in on this thread with a request of my own:

Does anyone have any records, MI or otherwise, for William Ramsay LL D of Templehall, Coldingham, or his children, all four sons baptised at Coldingham (no records found so far for the daughters).  I know these people scattered, but they all started their lives at Coldingham:

James Ramsay, baptised 1745 (died before 1778)

John Cumming Ramsay, baptised 1746 (became an advocate in Edinburgh, died 1782)

Alexander/Robert Ramsay, baptised 1748, married Margaret Hogg

David Ramsay baptised 1750, married Mary McLeod of McLeod (Captain, RN, buried at Inveresk, 1818)

Essex Ramsay born 1751 (married Hugh Milliken, Merchant, Port Glasgow)

Jean Ramsay born? died 1772 Preston House, Prestonpans

Any snippets of information would be welcome,

Many thanks, br1gau

Hi tisonlymoi,

It would be easier now to let me know what gaps you have and I will see what I have in the trees.
