Title: Help needed with my Irish Ancestors please!
Post by: hmcmillan29 on Sunday 12 July 09 17:26 BST (UK)
Hi Roots Chatters,

I dont know where to start with my Irish ancestors and wondered if someone can point me in the right direction please.

James McMillan was my 3x Great Grandfather who was born in 1845, Co Antrim.  He married Ann Burns on 28 June 1872 at St Mgts Church, Johnstone, Paisley.

I have their marriage certificate and it gave the name of James' parents who were Charles McMillan and Ann McAuley.

I have no idea as to how I go about finding James' birth details and anything on his parents.

I would very much appreciate any help.

Many thanks
Hazel

Hi

Birth Registration did not start until 1864 so you will have to rely on Church Records if available.
On the Marriage Certificate does it give where James was from at the time of Marriage.  You will need to find the area and religion to be able to find the Church.

Hi John,

Many thanks for looking at my post.

On the marriage cert, it says James' usual residence was Dalry, (Ayrshire) and they were married "28th June 1872 at St Margarets Church, Johnstone after Banns according to the ?? of the Catholic Church".  (I couldnt make out what was written, hence the ??)

Any hints and tips would be much appreciated.

Possibly 'after Banns according the the Rites of the Catholic Church"
