Hi.
My GGG/Grandfather Richard Rigby was married in 1828 at Bolton Le Moors Lancashire, I have found the marriage on IGI, what I cannot understand is that it only gives his spouses name as Mary, there is no surname. I have also found on IGI the baptisms of their chidren who were all born pre 1837 and again the mothers name is given just as Mary. I am trying to find out the maiden name of Mary, can anyone advise or help.
Regards Dave.

The entry on the IGI that you have found is a submitted entry by the LDS and not extracted. It is likely that as the date is estimated a marriage has not even been found in Bolton le Moors for this couple but has just been assumed by the submitter.
Some Bolton le Moors PR's are on Lancashire OPC's http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

Hi,
I noticed that the were living in Great Bolton (West). It is quite possible they were married in Deane which was the adjoining parish. And sure enough there is an entry on the IGI for a Richard Rigby to a Mary Manley on 29th August, 1826. This looks likes like one of the later batches that have been added and doesn`t state if it is Extracted or Member Submitted. However, as they do give a date it is worth checking out.

Hi
I see from the 1861 census that Richard and Mary had a son Richard bn c1847. There are a couple of birth registrations that are possible for him around this time in Bolton Reg District and one way of finding Mary's maiden name would be to order one.
If it was me I would order direct from the local register office rather than the GRO and specify father Richard, mother Mary as they refund the full charge if it doesn't match whereas the GRO only refund part.

Hi Mo and Rosie.
Thanks for your quick replies.
I will check out the information you have given, and hopefully will find out the maiden name of my GG/Grandmother.
Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
Was your ancestor Richard Rigby an engine driver? A driver of that name was involved in a spectacular railway accident at Bolton in 1858. He jumped off before the crash and survived.
Thought it was worth a mention, just in case he was your man, and you hadn't heard of it.
Harry.

I had a look at the marriage Richard to Mary Manley it stated that Richard was a weaver ,they both signed with their mark and a John Chadwick was witness, this was at Deane. Still at Deane three baptisms all on the 14th December 1828
Ann born 26th August 1826
Richard born 20th September 1824
Mary born 6th October 1828
Richard's occupation Bookkeeper I can't imagine that these are the same Richards since he couldn't write his name on the marriage records

Hi Dave
Do you have your Richard on census, are you able to give us details of his children so we are sure we are looking at the right marriage.
Rosie

Hi Rosie.
Yes that is the correct Rigby family, on the 41/51/61 census they lived in Duncan Street Bolton. Thomas their son my GG/Grandfather married in 1848 at Bolton and then moved to Salford where he worked in the cotton mills as a cotton spinner. I have traced the Rigby line of my family back to Richard and Mary Rigby but I could not confirm the maiden name of Mary. I am awaiting reply from Bolton Register Office for a possible Birth of a Richard Rigby.

Hi. I have recently come across a baptism for your Richard Rigby, 17 Feb 1800 at St Wilfrids RC Preston, son of Nicholas Rigby and Catherine, sponsors Jos Goodear and Mary Johnson. May I ask, have you done a DNA test? My maternal line is Rigby, and I believe this Nicholas Rigby was the brother of my 4xggf George Rigby. By the way, the son Richard b1846 Bolton, had mmn as Partington. Michaela
