Hey,
I'm looking for birth and death records for George DRYSDALE.
I have a Will for him which records his death as been on 8th Dec 1854 in Alva. But it doesn't seem to be recorded in either the statutory registers or old parish registers avaliable on SP (I'm wondering if he fell in the hole between the two... :))
He was married to Catherine Duncan Davie on 29 Oct 1842. 5 kids (as far as I can tell).
Turns up in the 1851 census and I THINK I've also found him in the 41; both of which put his birth around 1809
Have 2 likely possibilites for birth certs, but am not sure which without more info.
Any help in tracking down the above, or additional information about him would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Heather

Hi Heather,
I can't help you directly, sorry. You might want to either re-post on the Clackmannanshire Boards as that's where Alva is, or alternatively ask one of the mods to do it for you.
Possibly a better chance of more reponses from peoople who know the area that way.

Hi Heather and Anne :)
Given the name of second born daughter, Catherine Smith Drysdale b. Nov 1851 and first born son Robert b. Sept 1847, I would have thought this IGI entry was highly likely:
GEORGE DRYSDALE Birth: 29 JUL 1808/ Christening: 28 AUG 1808 Alva, Stirling
Parents: ROBERT DRYSDALE and KATHRINE SMITH

Anne, if it's not in Stirling how come the records that I have list the location as Alva, Stirling? Is Alva really close to the border between the two county's causing some confusion with the records or something?
Thanks Monika :) That is the birth record that I am currently leaning towards. The other possibility is 19/2/1809 to George DRSYDALE and Janet STOCKS. From traditional naming, I'm leaning towards Robert and Kathrine. But George is a name that has been cropping up a lot so I don't want to competely discount it at this point.
Am currently chasing up the DRYSDALE line, from memory is someone on the name interests board looking into the same line. I might send them a PM and see if they have anything.

My mistake, was an old post and they were looking into Wilsons...
-
Hi Heather - Just checking, is this the one you are chasing.
George Drysdale 1809 Alva Stirling.
1851 census.
Woolen Manufacturer. Employing 5 boys and 1 woman.
Wife Catherine born Alva c1817.
Children - Maryanne 1846 Alva, Robert 1848 Alva, John 1850 Alva.
IGI - George dob 29 Jul 1808 Bap 28 Aug 1808.
Parents Robert Drysdale and Katherine Smith.
Have a number of Drysdale's in my tree George is not one of ém, but you never know ???
Most births for that era were Alva Stirling later ones were Alva Clackmannanshire, Clacks is pretty limited there seems to be a whole lot missing (much to my annoyance LOL)

Hey patvp,
That's the one. Have not yet been able to confirm that the birth recorded in the IGI is the correct one though.
I'm a little confused... does that mean that Alva is in Stirling or in Clackmannan? Or are there 2 different places called Alva?
-
Hi heather - Alva Stirling and Alva Clackmannanshire are one and the same except they kep the records in either place..difficult I know..bin there done that...
What I have is (and not my line)
Children of George Drysdale and Catherine Duncan Davie are..and not in chronological order.
Mary Ann 12/3/46 Alva.
Robert 13/9/47 Alva.
John 14/11/49 Alva
Catherine Smith 21/11/53
George 1854 Alva.
Isabella 1860 Alva ?
1861 census they are at Johnston St Alva and Catherine is listed as proprietor of houses ??
Catherine's birthplace is given as Causbiss sic ?? Stirling.
So we have Robert 1848, John 1850, George 1854, Catherine 1852 and Isabella ??1860..John Blcakwood Lodge and Agnes Harrower servant.
So this looks like your lot.
Robert Drysdale and Catherine Smith married 11 Feb 1799 Alva.
Children..once again not in chronological order.
William 1811, Catherine 1801, Mary 1799, Elizabeth 1803, Robert 1816, James 1806, Margaret 1813, George 1808.
These according to IGI Although if I were you would try and confirm with SP.
Know Alva pretty well, but a long time since I was there last :'(.
Afterthough - Hi Monica ;D
All the best patvp and good hunting..let me know if I can help.
-
Sorry Heather!
I didn't mean that you 'had it wrong' - I meant that as Alva is now Clackmannanshire, anyone following separate boards (i.e. Stirling but not Clackmannan) would be more liable to see your message.

Thanks patvp,
That is a HUGE help, thanks for all the hunting! :)
Anne, that's cool. I'm still pretty new to the FH thing and am unfamiliar with the area. I wasn't aware of the fact that Alva is now in Clackmannan.
Thanks for the advice :)

Hi Heather - No worries..good luck ..huntin LOL..patvp

Hello there.
I know that this is a very old thread but George Drysdale from Alva is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather via his daughter Catherine Smith Drysdale. She married my Great, Great Grandfather Robert Cunningham.
I have a fairly extensive family tree skeleton that I built up many years ago. However having recently rekindled my interest I am looking to add a little more meat to the bone.
Perhaps, if anyone has information that could help me out you could get in touch.

Hi Zebedee123,
Welcome to RootsChat :)
I am very sorry but we are no longer able to contact Heather who originated this thread as her email address has changed :'(
Perhaps you should start off a new topic on with where you are upto with your family research and what you are trying to find out.
All the Best
Sarah :)

I thought that the person I correspond with currently was the same Heather. But unfortunately it isn't. Even though they do have the Drysdale surname that they are researching.
