Hi Rod and welcome to rootschat :D

Have you some dates please for say John and Mary's marriage or for some of their kids?
Were they married in England and if so whereabouts?
Dates and places make searching simpler :D

If they lived in England until 1901- which is how one could read your post- have you checked them out on any census?  Knowing this will  avoid tranversing the same ground.

Charlotte,
The Butlers come from Whiteabbey in Northern Ireland around late 1880s to 1915 then some moved to CarrickFergus & beyond.
John Butler died 1903, his second wife Jane Gormley Butler died 1950
I have copies of extracts of birth certs of their children  9 of them.
I know bits a pieces about Jane & her children , but Johns first marriage I know very little , he had 4 children I believe 1 was John died in WW1 he was married had children , his decendent has been asking the same questions Im asking on this site HER name is Jo Mollyrose.
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks Rod

Rod, when you say he died in WW1 do you mean as a serviceman?

If so the CWGC [Commonweath War Grave Commission] site should have an entry for him which may give the names of his next of kin and address. It would be worth looking to see if this leads anywhere useful for you. The site is free to search etc.

Rod, I think I'm correct in saying that you could get him army file if you wanted ityou certainly can get the files in Canada and Australia. ...
It may contain more family info.

A question about availability etc on the Armed AServices Board would tell you the answer if you decide you are interested in doing this.

HI

If you click on Mollyrose's (Jo's) name it will give you further info and tell you that she has not been on this board since February this year.  If you look at other posts she has made maybe someone else is in more direct contact with her.

I just hope for your sake that nothing  has happened to her.

If you can find one of her posts again, even tho it is an old post click, on the little icon below here name and avatar- it's on left hand side of the page in the side column.  It will show "personal message". click on that and it will bring you to a box in which you can type her a message asking her to contact you howver you wish to do that- thru RC or on your own email. Press Post  then sit and wait.

If you also click on the other little icon it will show "profile"... go to that and it will tell you when her most recent visit to RC was. Gives you an idea if she's till logging on to RC.  If she is she will receive your PM the next time she connects.

let us know how this goes- and if I haven't made it clear get back and ask.
I'm going off line for a while but will be back in an hour or so.
Good luck ;D

Hi Rod,
John & Catherine had 3 children Maggie, Patrick & Kathleen.  Maggie is still living and has just turned 98.  I am her granddaughter.  All her family are still living in Whiteabbey.  I have just begun to research John Butler and found some records relating to him.  Kathleen died recently but all her family are living in Edinburgh.  We are all still in touch.  I hope this helps.  I have some documents just received yesterday that list all of Johns sisters and half brothers and sisters.
Henry was also known as Harry and he lived in Flanders where he tended the graves.  he later returned to Whiteabbey to live with Maggie and we think he died whilst living in a nursing home in Bangor, Co DOwn
The Jo you are looking for is Kathleens daughter and lives in Edinburgh, i am in contact.

I see that you are in Australia, my Aunt Pauline, daughter of Maggie is in Newcastle near Sydney and Maggies son Michael is in NZ

I am John's great grand-daughter.  John died on 27th October 1914 - battle at La Basse- Neuve Chapelle.

I have attached a photo of Maggie(*)

Hi Rod,

Do you mean Patrick (John Butler Jnr's) Brother or Son?
His son moved to England - Birmingham- Jo's has this information.  He was known as Denis whilst in England.

When John Butler Jnr died in WW1 his wife, Catherine then went on to marry a man by the surname of Porter and had 6 other children.  We think she died in Australia at the age of 97. She had no contact with her 3 children to John Butler Jnr.

Maggie was brought up by Mary Logue (4 Main Street, Whiteabbey) and Kathleen and Patrick where brought up by Sarah Corrigan (5 Main Street, Whiteabbey)

The street that you mentioned Concrete Street was actually known as Concrete Row my father, a local man in Whiteabbey informed me last night.

Maggie is in Donegal on holiday at the minute and i will try to contact her and ask about Patrick who would have been her uncle but she may not remember.

Have you any other questions?

Great to hear from you

Cathy

New members usually need 3 posts to use PM system- just post once more on this thread and you should then see little green scroll under usernames. Click on it, type message and then send.
However, rodgill hasn't been online since Sept.2010 so not sure if they will see your message.

This is for Cathy. If you still have relatives in Whiteabbey, are you able to find out if there are members of the Boyd family still living there? In 1851, John Boyd was keeper of the Belfast Hotel. In 1862, his daugher Martha Carson Boyd was proprietor. In 1865, Victoria Boyd became proprietor when her sister Martha married William Young. Later, the proprietorship passed to Victoria's sister Ellen, who died in 1913. My ggg grandfather Samuel Carson Boyd, exact birthplace in Ireland unknown but in Co. Antrim, had an uncle Samuel Carson and his mother Jenny Boyd was a Carson before marriage, as was Jenny's sister Isabella who married Thomas George of Ballyhill.
I feel that these Boyds could be related to my ancestors because of the Carson middle name for Martha. I would love to make contact with any Boyds that might still be living there.
Thank you for any help.
Peggy
