Celebs are Martin Freeman, Kim Cattrall, Chris Moyles, Davina McCall, David Mitchell and Kate Humble. Series to shown later this summer.
-
Martin Freeman, Kim Cattrall, Chris Moyles, Davina McCall, David Mitchell and Kate Humble.
.... who? ???
And I thought I knew everything. I'd better get off and do some googling. ;D
-
Ok, yes, I recognise Martin Freeman ....
And Kim Cattrall (born in Liverpool - surprising) ....
Have looked them all up but don't recognise the others. I'll be interested to see David Mitchell, the first novellist on WDYTYA.
-
Martin Freeman :- actor,
Kim Cattrall actress most famous for role in "Sex & The City" - born in Liverpool
Chris Moyles :- Radio 1 DJ considered controversial by some obnoxious by others
Davina McCall TV presenter
David Mitchell
Kate Humble TV presenter - Springwatch
-
David Mitchell - Comedian who does a show on BBC2 called Mitchell and ??? Webb I think! ;D
Kerry
-
Yep, David Mitchell - Comedian, very quick witted and on a lot of comedy type quiz shows, looking forward to that one the most.
-
Oops, I must've found the wrong David Mitchell ... ;D
-
I thought that Konnie Huq (ex. Blue Peter) was going to be in series 7.... :-\
just wish I could remember where I read it..... :-\
Nanny Jan
-
That might of been me :-[ I'm sure I read it in the Radio Times last year and posted it on here. I do get the impression that they film more than they show though, so perhaps she might appear in the following series! ;)
-
Can I have a star please? I've actually heard of them all!! ;D
Although, sometimes the best programmes are about the ones you didn't know - e.g. Jodie Kidd last year.
I like to know where they're born, so did a bit of googling:
Martin Freeman - Aldershot, Hampshire
Kim Cattrall - Widnes near Liverpool (moved to Canada at age 3 months)
Chris Moyles - Leeds, Yorkshire
Davina McCall - London
David Mitchell - Salisbury, Wiltshire
Kate Humble - Wimbledon near London.
I don't like Chris Moyles but at least it might mean a bit of Yorkshire research. Can't be doing with Davina either but the programme might be okay.
I shall look forward to them all. ;D
Jill
-
I think Davina's mother is french? so that could be the international one, or as usual one of many!
-
Whoever they are I'll watch it avidly (and probably some of the repeats !!!)
Thewre was a repeat of 'So you think you're Royal' on Sky to-day - I thought I'd watched it and I watched about 30mons and KNEW I'd watched so i Sky+'d the rest !!!
Am I very sad ???????
-
No! Tell yourself that you're being selective with your viewing - that's what I do!! ;D
Is it really the 7th series? It was the first series that sparked me off to start my family history - so have I really been doing it for 6 years? Funny, I knew absolutely nothing when I started - not even my maternal grandmothers' maiden names - but I thought I'd only be at it for a couple of weeks!! Little did I know! Bug...bitten....... ;D ;)

Love Kate Humble on Spring Watch and Autumn Watch but she does overuse the words 'gorgeous' and 'absolutely' - so presumably this WDYTYA episode of her story will be *Absolutely gorgeous*.
Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City) has been spending a lot of time in 'the old country' lately, maybe it was filming for this series that kept her here.
I thought Davina's mother was French too - although I think there are complications with mother/step mother (seem to recall real mother disappeared years ago, so maybe the French connection is the step mum).
Regarding the filming, they appear to be filmed at various times and then the BBC seem to assemble a collection for showing - as though they are actually filming these programmes constantly and then shuffling them around as to which ones are shown first?
However, looking forward to seeing them again as they make a nice change from 'talent shows' ::)
And the problem with them is that as we started them (thank you Simon Cowell), all the other TV companies around the world have taken up a franchise so we now get all the other versions on lesser TV channels too - but that's another subject . . . . . . .

On the red button after "Springwatch" someone on the message boards said they play a drinking game - one drink every time Kate and the others say these overused words. Must be a lot of inebriated people out there! ;D

According to Wikipedia its her mother that is\was French not her step mother.

Chris Moyles family are Irish, so I think he did quite a bit of research there.

;D ;D ;D Thanks for the update Bevbee
et merci bien davidft ;)

Just thought I would poke my nose in from 'Down Under' ;D on Foxtel last night we had 'Vic Reeves' or James Leigh???? comedian. Absolutely fascinating family history on his mums side. What series was this person in? We must be behind over here in Aus.

Vic reeves was in Series 1 - the next one in the UK will be series 7

:o :o :o :o :'(
Thanks Falkryn....I guess we're not down under for nothing. ;D
Are these on DVD by any chance? it might be quicker than waiting for the next 6 series.
Kimberly
-
Certainly the first three series are available on DVD I don't know about the rest of them
(Checking the BBC shop site only shows series 1 & 2 as available but they are taking advance orders for series 4)
-
:D :D :D Cheers
Kimberly
-
Kimberly,
Don't be too worried, they don't appear to be showing the episodes in any particular order. Some of the later ones have been aired here.
Too late now, but if you have pay TV, last weekend you missed three days of back to back WDYTYA's on BBC Knowledge - and they were not shown in any particular order. They aired from 1 pm to 11pm. Most enjoyable though I'd seen them all before. ;)
I agree though, you don't have to know the celebs to enjoy the show. I also thought Jodie Kidd was an interesting one. I did know who she was though. ;D
-
Hiya Ruskie ;)
Thanks for the heads up..
Am off to the land of the long white cloud for a couple of weeks.....have set foxtel iq onto record....will have to have lotsa bags of chippies and guiness for catching up when I get back. :o
Kimberly

Back to series 7 - I know that Kate Humble gets to the Institute of Mining in Newcastle upon Tyne at some point - apparently she has some mining roots.
It might be worth watching just to see the inside of their library - fabulous building with some extremely old books.

I just hope its better than the last series.
For me it seemed to spend about half the show on one person and then the rest of the show rushing thru the rest of the generations.
Cant rememeber who it was but one show spent half an hour on the persons father being in a phsyciatric hospital - which he already knew about - and then went back to his grandparents who he also knew, and 1 person from a previous generation,so at the end of the programme all he had actually learnt was the name of 1 person.
I watched it with mum & dad (I find its a good way of getting them remembering stuff lol) but even dad said at the end of the series it was more concentrated on 'Social history' than researching family history.
Only difference was Kevin Whateley the last in the series, but someone told me his was 'left over' from the previous series, hope the new series is more like that tho!
Have to wait n see when it starts tho,
Gaille
-
I'd nearly forgotten about that, Gaille. Apart from Kevin Whateley's episode the rest were very disappointing.
I sincerely hope they've reverted back to the old formula or else they'll be losing viewers and assuming we're no longer interested. The BBC have a habit of doing that!!
Jill
-
I just hope its better than the last series.
Gaille
It can't get any worse - surely
I do get the impression that they film more than they show though
They do - I saw an interview with Maureen Lipman some time ago and she was saying that she had done one. She thought they didn't show it because it wasn't interesting enough. It had to be better than the psyciatric hospital effort.
C
-
I find I struggle to hold an interest in the show if the "celeb" is someone who I don't know and I have to admit I have no idea who this Mitchell chap is so that will be one show that will probably not hold my interest. Martin Freeman is that tall skinny bloke from The Office isn't he ?

C
They must do some research before approaching these clebs otherwise they might end up with nothing of worth for a 60 minute TV show. I can't believe they would waste time and more importantly money without doing some brief research first.
-
I enjoy Sex and the City and also live in Liverpool, so I have an interest in Kim Cattrall who I notice was born in Widnes - says one bio on the internet, but I'd heard she was born in Mossley Hill. Another bio claims her birth name to be Clare Woodgate and gives her birthdate, but there's no birth entry for that name and date, although there is a possible similar entry.
I wonder what truths will come out in the programme or how they work around assumed names.
-
I agree some of the previous series were disappointing but hey ho I still watched every one I could!
Looking forward to the next series
Newbie ;D
-
I found a Kim Catterral on freebmd right date right place.
-
Alanb, Martin Freeman was in 'The Office' (the original UK version) and he was in the sit-com 'Hardware' about working in an ironmongers shop. More recently he has been appearing in films (was in Love Actually), and has just been working over in the USA, latest release is 'Boy meets Girl'. will be seen soon as Dr Watson to Sherlock Holmes on TV. I am sure I read somewhere that his mother is Irish.
I would love some more advice on researching in Ireland ;)
'The tall thin one ...' is Stephen Merchant who co-wrote The Office with Ricky Gervais.
Pat ...
-
Kate Humble is the only one I've heard of ...
... my favourites from previous series were Colin Jackson and Julia Sawalha ... Colins because of his enthusiasm and how he involved all his current family in it, and Julia's because of the totally different background of both her parents ... mother from Hugenot and father from Jordanian beduin ...
Think its gone down since that series ... :(

Hello Ruskie,
David Mitchell is one of those Cambridge graduates that end up in comedy, however like so many of the Cambridge graduate comedians there is much more about the person. He is always worth watching on programmes such as QI and is often on Radio 4 topical/quiz programmes.
He teams up frequently with fellow Cambridge graduate Robert Webb.
They have written extensively for television and their credits include The Jack Docherty Show (Channel 5), Yes Sir, I can boogie (Radio 4), Children’s Hour with Armstrong and Miller (Radio 4), Armstrong and Miller (Channel 4), the 11 O’Clock Show (Channel 4), Big Train (BBC2) and TV To Go (BBC1); and as writer/performers for Comedy Nation (BBC2) and Bruiser (BBC2). They also wrote and performed their own sitcom pilot Daydream Believers for Channel 4 and their own sketch show for Choice called The Mitchell and Webb Situation.
They have won Baftas etc etc - maybe I am getting old, but I find their comedy a bit hit and miss, sometimes excellent, sometimes ???

I think Stephen Merchant was co-writer of The Office but did not star in it, but he both wrote and starred with Ricky Gervaise in Extras. ;)

He's been in a few things Alanb, but I can't remember any of them at the moment. ;)

Mackenzie Crook has been in all the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films :) You might have seem him in those.

By co-incidence one of the sketches in their show last night was all about how hit and miss their humour can be ;D but I really like David Mitchell.

I don't like Chris Moyles but at least it might mean a bit of Yorkshire research. Can't be doing with Davina either but the programme might be okay.
In the past I've found some of the most interesting programmes have been ones I haven't expected to like, because I didn't feel much empathy with the celeb. In this case I think I've seen David Mitchell on Have I Got News for You - but I could be mixing him up with someone else - and I've never heard of the others, so I've got no preconceptions. It'll be good to see Liverpool on the map again. Seems like a greater emphasis on English research this time?
Lesley
-
I hope there's more emphasis on British research this time round as well. Often the programme is much more relevant and therefore - to me anyway - interesting, when it's set in this country. My all time favourite is still Jeremy Paxman's programme and I also loved Griff Rhys Jones's as well.
Jill
-
I loved Griff's programme, too, because they showed Vineyard St, which was at the back of the tenements my mum lived in. I also liked Paxman, and Stephen Fry, and Sheila Hancock, and the man who found out his ancestors were Indian, but didn't know. I do think they should include Scottish, Welsh and Irish ancestors in the series though - there are an awful lot of us about!
-
I agree - that's why I was careful to say Britain not England.
I think we've had a few of each nation, haven't we? I remember looking forward to David Tennant's episode because I was hoping for more about Scottish research - and he spent most of his time in N Ireland! And then Ken Stott went off to Italy!! Have we had a 'true' Scottish episode?
Jill
-
YOu're right Jill, I've been a bit disappointed in the past too. Maybe this very English looking lot will find one or two Welsh, Scottish or Irish ancestors! I wouldn't like to see all the overseas episodes stopped though. A diet of nothing but ag labs and domestic servants might turn off the general public.
-
Better get our certs ordered soon then, if we want them before the rush....... :-\

Recent series seem to have been just the opposite though - too much tootling off abroad and not enough ag labs!! Justice for the ag labs!!! ;D ::)

I went mad and ordered 6 certs exactly 10 days ago - and was overwhelmed when the first one arrived only 3 days later (2 days ahead of time). 4 others came the next day, but I'm still waiting for the last one - beginning to wonder if it's got lost.
Jill

Were they worth it though?
-
Definetly!
;D
Jill
-
I'd really like to see an episode with ag labs and see them try and push as far back in time as possible - getting beyond the obvious census/GRO/ easy PRs stuff.
Too many subject's histories, even when set in the UK, don't seem to go back much before the censuses. Let's have a few manorial documents/ poll books/tax records for a change.
Carole
-
Wouldn't it be nice if they had an episode of "Who do you think you are" with just an ordinary person off the street. Some of their ancestors would be much more interesting I think.
Cheers JOy

Chris Moyles got a bit of bad press for saying that his is one of the ones that does not go through the events of WW1 / 2
-

I'm tiring ever so slightly of those with Jewish and WW1 and 2 emphasis. Love them all though ...

One of the things I loved about the Paxman episode was finding how his poorer relatives had to move from the south of the country up to the industrial north to get work. It's something that happened to many families, and it's fascinating watching the movement of ordinary people from one end of the country to the other. Most families can trace back to ag labs - it's interesting to see the different directions they took before 1841.

Unfortunately the producers of the show do not think that way. I read a recent interview where they are quoted as saying that they felt that more people could relate to celebrities than to "joe bloggs".
Equally unfortunately, I think we have to remember that genealogy is only a very loose base upon which the program was founded it's primary function as a TV programme is to provide a certain number of minutes of "general entertainment"

i don't really agree with that (not what you are saying more the BBC comments)
the amount of diy or house auction programmes have been a major viewing success all with joe bloggs, i think maybe the BBC underestimate the true interest of family history, heir hunters, so you think your royal etc, again all with joe bloggs the main people, it's not as if the celebrity wdytya has anything to do with their way of life, the average person would not cost the same, as the way they pamper the "stars" and i'll bet many on here have done a lot of the work for the programme, but would never be able to afford the places they get taken to, i'll bet there are many people who don't watch certain episodes maybe because they don't like the celebrity,
lol maybe in the economic times they should cut costs and feature the IMPORTANT people ;)
i for one would find, for example a programme about how a lottery winners life had been changed more interesting, than a programme on how the beckhams live

Do you remember how Jeremy Paxman had assumed his origins to be middle class and northern? Funny thing is, there are still many Paxman's in the Framlingham area, who are probably all related if you go back a little way.
The programme of relocating folk from East Anglia to the northern mill towns was fairly short lived due to importation of cheaper cotton affecting the industry, but some of those families took advantage of the situation they found themselves in and worked hard and really did well. Some though did eventually find their way back to Suffolk (and Norfolk).

I think you are spot on ..... I also believe that had the program not been transferred from BBC2 to BBC1 as part of their "general entertainment" then it might possibly have gone in the direction of "Joe Bloggs".
Unfortunately there seems to be this belief that we (ie the general public) are besotted with so called celebrities and hang on their every deliverance although having said that there must be a considerable number who do, given the number of so called celebrity gossip magazines which stuff the shelves of the average newsagent/supermarket.
It is possibly this audience that the producers have aimed for rather than the genuine genealogist - quantity rather than quality ::)

sadly probably so >:(
although (and this is the only comparision i could think of, i do NOT watch it) the "normal" big brother and compare the celebrity one for viewing figures, and the normal one comes out way on top, not sure if thats because everyone tunes in to see where they get these strange people from ::)
i'd still like to think the majority of normal people prefer to see someone they can relate to, and how the BBC could think that spoon feeding celebrities with stuff and moving them to different countries or on 1st class trains that it is anything like the research most of us do, amazes me, i must really try to walk into a records office one day and ask a question and get an instant answer lol, must frustrate a newcomer to watch one of these episodes and then realise you would have more chance chucking a note in a bottle in the sea, than tracing history as they do ::)
-
Although WDYTYA is all about tracing those in the public eye, and some of them have exotic backgrounds, I think it's amazing how ordinary most of them appear, especially when they go to visit their parents who live normal lives in a bungalow in an anonymous town.
Many of them have had normal/ordinary/humble upbringings and are not the 'gossip mag type' of celebrity.
I'm happy to see anyone on WDYTYA. ;D
-
I'm happy to see anyone on WDYTYA. ;D
I agree Ruskie. It's actually interesting to see that many of 'celebrities' have backgrounds just like our own, and that some 'very English' celebs turn out to have foreign ancestors. Anyway, I'm so old I haven't heard of the majority of them, and at the end of the programme I'm left wracking my brains trying to remember what they are famous for!
-
I belive Mr Moyles hunt may go over to Ireland (his mum)

It is interesting that Kim Cattrall is doing it as her Sex in the City colleague Sarah Jessica Parker is appearing in the US version of the show. I wonder if one of them did it because the other one did?
Also does anyone know if the US version has aired yet, as I think it was supposed to start back in April?

Hollywood stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Susan Sarandon will discover their family history for the American version of Who Do You Think You Are?, due to begin in late May 2009.
Former Friends star Lisa Kudrow, who is executive producer of the series, will also unearth her roots in one of the six episodes to be screened on American channel NBC.
Kudrow says: 'The show personalises history and turns it into a gripping narrative. The most amazing thing is the realisation of how connected we all are.'
The BBC plans to broadcast the series here later in the year

Has anyone got a copy of the magazine "who do you think you are" for this month. I saw inside the back cover they have the group of guest for the next series.
I looked quickly at it and can only remember the following.
Can anyone else give me the names of the others in that picture.
Thanks
Vicky
Kim Cottrill, Kate Humble and Chris Moyles - I think it was. Who are the others?

Not sure I'd want a lottery winner to be featured, simply because they'd only want to show how much they bought with the money!!
However, I'd volunteer my ancestors for the programme as none of them moved away from Liverpool, and even stayed within the same area all their lives, so that would be cheap and easy ;) However, I'd love to make them work really hard and sort out my John Smith and his family...now that would be a challenge ;D

I've just been dipping into next week's Radio Times - and the new WDYTYA series starts next Wed 15 July at 9 pm with Davina MCCall.
It sound as though it might be very interesting:
"On the English side she tests the veracity of rumours that she is descended illegitimately from royal blood, a trail that leads to Windsor - but not in the way she expected. Across the Channel she finds a great grandfather who protected the English king and was at the centre of a political bombshell that rocked France."
Sounds like she'll probably find her ancestors "working in the King's kitchen" at Windsor Castle - as one of mine did in the early 1800s!!
I just hope she doesn't go too ott - as she's liable to do!!
I find it strange that the new series is starting in the middle of July. I thought these things were usually saved up for the start of the 'new season' in September. Perhaps it's got something to do with the BBC's plans to show the US series later this year?
Jill

Thanks Jill, postit note attached.... ;D Windsor as well........ :P

typical new it would run weds nights clashes with my pole dancing classes
is it repeated on thurs at 7 on bbc2 like last time?
royal servants and the like records are held in the archive at windsor castle you must submit all queires in writing to them
heard chris moyles on radio 1 last week - or the week before - talking about filiming the opening titles he said he had to walk 4 steps and then look left
you think its simple but its not!

Thanks for the info Jill........off to write myself a reminder.

I had a quick look in the Radio Times, toni*, but couldn't find any repeat for Thurs or Fri. It's usually repeated, so perhaps Mon or Tues of the following week. :-\
I wrote to the archivist at Windsor Castle a while ago about my ancestor who worked in the King's kitchen there c. 1816. Unfortunatley, they couldn't find any record of him and suggested that he was probably a casual worker so wouldn't have been in the records. I was really impressed with the speed and friendliness of the reply - and that it didn't cost me any more than an sae.

Sorry if someone has already said, but there is a new series of
Who do you think you are on Wednesday 15th July on BBC1 at 9.00pm
-
Thanks for the heads up I hadn't noticed
-
First on Davina McCall
-
Others, Chris Moyles, Kim Humble, David Mitchell, Kim Cattrall, and Martin Freeman ;D
-
Not long to wait then.
Regarding repeats, at the moment there are none listed but I would have thought that they would do something similar to what they did with the previous series and that is show it in the 7pm slot on BBC 2. Failing that it should be on the iplayer.
-
Crumbs! I must lead a sheltered life ??? Davina Mc thing, does Big Brother and a hair dye advert....Chris Moyles :-\ on the wirelessradio...as for the others?, I think I'll have to Google ;D
-
You're not alone suey ;)
I don't recognise many of them either :) I could only truly identify two of them...Davina McCall and Kate Humble, the others could pass me in the street and I wouldn't know who they were ;D
Looking forward to the new series though, we always learn something new about the people concerned, and often the ones we think will be boring turn out to be really interesting after all.

I would watch the programme whoever was featured, simply because I love the research, the emotions, the surprises, and the end result.
Note it's on Wednesday 15th, not Tuesday as previously.

My TV Guide lists Wednesday’s programme as one of its four “Picks of the Day” – and the only one to receive four stars. The write-up ends with the comment “This is a cracking start to the series – and you can’t help warming to McCall.”
Moderator comment: Since the series has now started, this topic now locked and discussion of the first episode can be found here:
