I'm trying to trace the birth and also the parents of Robert Meikle, who was born sometime prior to 1770, I believe in Lesmahagow. He married Agnes Stobbo, of Stonehouse, in Lesmahagow in March 1801. I'd appreciate any help that's available. Many thanks in advance. ??? ???

I have a transcription of the 1821 census for Lesmahagow that has Robert Meikle and Agness (sic) Stobbo living at Kypes Waterhead. This census didn't name all the household but did give numbers of those living at each address. There are 4 males and 3 females living there including Robert and Agness. Birth years are: 2 males born between 1807-11, 1 born 1801-1806, 1 born 1762-1771. Females: 1 born 1812-1816, 1 born 1801-06, 1 born 1762-71.
There is also living in the next listed dwelling (which may or may not be next door), a William Meikle at Kypes Waterhead. A household of 1 male born between 1732-41, and 1 (unnamed) female born between 1732-41. Maybe Robert's father and mother?
hope this helps

Thanks for that PP. I had seen the 1821 census, but I wasn't aware of the ages. I had been hoping for confirmation that William was his father and getting his mother's name too. But I'm still living in hope!

Hi Ken
Just wondering from your last post www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,354491.0.html whether you had managed to check the names of the children showing to Robert and Agnes on SP following their marriage. Likely from that 1821 census that the William living 'next door' could well be Robert's father now that we have the additional info on age ranges for this William and maybe wife (mother?).
I think for children we have so far: William born c. 1802 and a Martha christened in 1815. Just wondering if we could make some guesses on possible names for Robert's mother from these names and then try and find records to start firming up :)

Hi Guys
My other half is a direct descendent of Robert Meikle and Agnes Stobo. Unfortunately he has not been able to get details of Robert's parents but does have Agnes's.
Agnes was born 18/5/1770 in Stonehouse to James Stobo and Martha Alison.
Children of Robert and Agnes were
- William Meikle, b.27/9/1801, Kypewaterhead; d.17/4/1872, Kypewaterhead
- James Meikle, b.27/12/1803, Kypewaterhead
- Robert Meikle, b.9/11/1805, Kypewaterhead
- John Meikle, b.12/7/1808, Kypewaterhead
- Martha Meikle, b.20/11/1815, Kypewaterhead; d.5/6/1857, Kypeside

Thanks Monica and Tracy,
Both the replies came through one after another, and I was just about to send Monica the information I had on Robert and Agnes's children, but I never had the dates of death. I had the names of Agnes parents but I have no dates of marriage or birth for them. I don't suppose you have them in your records Tracy? Or an I being too optimistic? I'm amazed how much information I've been able to get since that first inquiry on James and William Scott that I put up not so long ago, that you, Monica, replied to. I only wish that my own ancestors had been so fruitful.
Many thanks to both of you.

Hi
Sorry, no dates for marriage/birth of Agnes's parents but have births of Agnes's siblings
- Alexander, b.21/5/1760, Stonehouse
- Martha, b.24/6/1764, Stonehouse
- John, b.8/8/1766, Stonehouse
- Helen, b.11/3/1768, Stonehouse
I've had a look and can't find any marriage on IGI/SP for James Stobo and Martha Alison but given date of eldest child would expect it to be pre 1760.

Thanks Tracy,
That'll put a few more bricks in the wall. I'll press on and see what else I can come up with.

Hi Ken and Tracey
There is a birth showing on the OPRs (SP) for a Robert Meikle to a William Meikle and Agnes Craig in 1768....I wonder if relevant?
On IGI there also seems to be two entries for daughters Agnes (would imagine first died) on 12 DEC 1768 and 24 DEC 1775.
I can also see a John son born to them on this link:
http://genealogyalongtherockies.com/sabthomp/MEIKLE/MeikleSCTLesmapt2.htm
Earlier births/christening show on here:
http://genealogyalongtherockies.com/sabthomp/MEIKLE/MeikleSCTLesmapt1.htm
Reference to Kypeside (Kypside/Koipside/Keipside) and Waterside
If you change the last number before 'x.htm' you get other years up to 1843 and Part 5. Tracey, strangely some of the births you have Robert and Agnes Stobbo show with different mother's name ???
There is also a link at the bottom on the left, to the Meikle One name Study linked to this site.

I really can't help with the genealogy of this query - but that's never stopped me before!
I have a poem written in 1914 by a Mr Thomas Thomson, Ohio, USA (late of Craighead Mill, Lesmahagow) and in it he remembers the "worthies" (well-known people or "characters") of his Lesmahagow childhood 50 years prior.
There are a few Meikles mentioned and its just a fun thing -
"John Donaldson an' Baker Kean,
Robbie Carmichael an' Damie Keever,
Jennie Meikle an' Jennie Weir,
Mary Scott an' the Auld Scriver."
"Flesher Capie an' Carrier Tamson,
Daft Andrew Meikle an' Ross Lamb,
Bryson the Cracksman an' Auld Feeley,
John Barr the grocer an' Tartan Tam."
"Dannie Meikle an' Jamie Meikle,
An' Jock Meikle's dochter Kate,
Jamie Tudhope an' Andrew Tudhope,
An' Tudhope that married May Pate."
"Nathan Dickson in Teaths, Johnnie Shaw o' Woodyett,
An' Greenshields in Kerse an' Westown,
Kypeswaterhead Meikle, Samuel Barr in the Burn,
In Birkwoodbrigg Farm was a Brown."
There are 46 verses in total, these are the ones that mention Meikle.
There are also 35 Meikles mentioned in the old parochial burial records, only one for Kypeswaterhead (or Kips Waterhead as it is in the register).
"The spouse of William Mickle was buried 7th August 1843".
No name given.
There are a few Meikles buried in Stonehouse parish churchyard, and it may be just a coincidence but there was a family of Meikles there who farmed 2 farms - Littlekype West and Littlekype East. There is a small stream called the Kype Water so that accounts for the name - but you never know. Lesmahagow and Stonehouse parishes share a common border.
One monumental inscription in Stonehouse churchyard is for an Archibald Mickl 1722.
Good luck,
Lodger.

Hi Monica
Thanks for the links...my OH will enjoy having a look through them to fill up gaps elsewhere in his Meikles.
As to children of Robert and Agnes....the last child listed, Martha, was definitely theirs. SP shows birth record for her so not sure about why different mothers name given for some of the children ???
Rob will be in shortly so i'm going to leave this for him to dig deeper into

Have you ever seen the OP burial registers for Lesmahagow? Just wondered on the quality and detail of what is available if anyone wanted to go down this route.
My favourite parish so far, from what I have seen on SP is the Paisley OPR burial details which seem quite detailed given they were pre official registration.

Monica,
Yes, the Lesmahagow records are worth a look, there is a list of mortcloths from 1765 that ends at 1819, then a list of deaths with varying information in sometimes quite a difficult script, from 1820 - 1844.
Other good Lanarkshire parishes are -
Avondale (621) Has a mortality book 1817 - February 1854. Good information, wife usually has her maiden surname, some place of abode given, age, relationship, place of burial, date of burial and occupation.
Cambuslang (627) has burials 1784 - November 1854, quite good and gets better in the last decades.
Carluke (629) has a very good list of burials in the churchyard 1838 - 1851.
Carstairs (633) deaths 1819 - 1854. Gives name, age and cause of death.
Crawfordjohn (636) deaths 1817 - October 1854 with good information, age, relationships, abode, dates of death and burial.
Douglas (641) Deaths 1833- 1854 gives name, age, abode, sometimes relationship, cause of death, dates.
East Kilbride (643) deaths 1821 - 1839, name, age, place of birth, cause of death, date of death, some dates of burial.
Glassford (645) Mortality book October 1783 - December 1807.
Govan (644) burials in Govan churchyard January 1817 - February 1819, also April 1820 - February 1855.
Libberton and Quothquan (650) burials 1783 - 1854.
New Monkland (651) has good mortcloths scattered throughout most of the books, in session accounts etc.
Pettinain (653) deaths 1829 - 1849 good condition, gives name, age, abode, date of death and a few have relationships including mother's maiden surname, but not many like that.
Rutherglen (654) Mortality book 1705 - 1794 good condition, gives relationships.
Shotts (655) various deaths, burials and mortcloths, some very good.
Wandell and Lamington (659) deaths 1820 - 1856 good information - name, age, spouse, maiden surname, cause of death and place of burial.
And, as usual, the ones you want are missing!
-
There is a William Meikle listed in my book of transcriptions of Lesmahagow deaths, who may be the correct one. Details are thin - abode is blank, as is death date, burial was on 22 March 1822 and his age was 87. This would tie him in with the 1821 census showing him being born between 1732-41. From my own searches in these records, they are pretty incomplete, with large gaps and sometimes only cursory information.
PP
-
Hi PP, that certainly sounds a strong possibility for the likely father William doesn't it. Don't suppose you can see anything for a potential wife in his age range post the 1821 Census? There were two Williams with wives having children in the right time frame to be Robert's parents; mother's name Janet Meikle or Agnes Craig.
Lodger, that is great info :D You should think of making this info an information post here on the Lanarkshire board. It would work well for people searching for OPR burials and the renewed interest following SP's release of pre 1855 entries.

Hi All
We've been doing some digging and believe that Robert was the son of William Meikle and Agnes Craig. They were married 2 June 1765 in Avondale and had the following children
- John Meikle, b.1/11/1766, Lesmahagow
- Agnes Meikle, b.12/12/1768, Lesmahagow
- Robert Meikle, b.12/12/1768, Lesmahagow
Agnes Craig was born 31/3/1737 in Avondale.

Hi Tracey
Does look possible doesn't it :) Remember the first Agnes (chr. 12 Dec 1768) looks to have died as you have the second use of that name to those parents with the christening of Agnes on 24 Dec 1775.
There are no wills showing for the family that I can see on SP with the exception of William, son of Robert and Agnes, which is a pity (farmers are always good at leaving wills!). I would imagine that they may have been tenant farmers with the tenancy passed down the line. Not sure how you would research this.
Monica
-
Hi Monica
The family were farmers mainly. There are a lot of Meikles in the area and we've got lots of examples in Rob's tree of Meikles marrying Meikles....very very confusing!! :)
The family all were based around Little Kype, Kypeside and Kypewaterhead. We've been back to the area to look around and there are still Meikles farming the area.
I'm not sure if Rob's had a look at William's will, will check his SP stuff and see.

From memory on Ken's original post, there were will & testament entries for both son William and wife Margaret.

Well things have certainly moved on in the last couple of days, there's getting to be quite a spread now.I was most intrigued by Lodger's poem, is there any chance of getting a copy of the complete poem, as the names have spread quite a bit? I've been surprised with the amount of information the area has thrown up compared with other parts of the country that I've been researching. I'm sure it must be the quality of the other researchers I've become involved with. Many thanks to you all.

There is an OPR baptism for a William Meikle, 9 December 1733 to a Robert Meikle and Margaret Weir living in Kellylees. The date is close to the age for the death of a William in 1822, but not exact, and in the age range of the 1821 census.

I found an interesting site on the Meikles on Donald Macleods Genealogy Pages. It's home.xtra.co.nz/amkwil.html. It's well worth a look, especially with regards to Robert Meikle and Margaret Weir.

Hi Monica,
I found it by typing "Kellylees Lesmahagow" into Google. Donald Macleods Genealogy Pages was on the first page. There's a small tree on there, but all the interesting stuff appeared by clicking on "Names".

Some of the dates in these posts almost go back to the days of the '45. So this extract may be relevant especially if anyone knows that their Meikle was a carpenter:
"Among the unfortunate victims of the rebellion of 1715, there
was none more lamented, and none whose untimely fate created
greater sympathy, than the young and gallant Macdonald of
Kinloch-Moidart, who was surprised and arrested, while passing
the night in Lesmahago, by a young clergyman of the name of
Linning, and one Meikle, a carpenter. It has been often stated
that Kinloch-Moidart was on his way to join the army of Prince
Charles Edward, or that he was the bearer of despatches, which
would have justified his arrest; but the fact was, that in conse-
quence of bad health, he had left the Highland army, and was
returning home accompanied by a single servant, a state of
circumstances which should have protected him, even amid the
virulent feelings excited by a civil war; while the motives of his
captors were well illustrated by the loud complaints which were
subsequently made by them and their friends, that they were
not sufficiently rewarded by the Hanoverian Government. It is
some satisfaction to learn that the forces of Prince Charles
Edward, when they, on their retreat from Preston to Glasgow,
occupied Lesmahago, burnt down the house of Meikle. "

Thanks for the titbit. I have a Thomas Meikle b1670 from Lesmahagow, who was married to Bessie Couper, but I'm not sure of his occupation. They had 6 children, Robert, Margaret, Robert, Marion, Thomas and William. The facts you gave are certainly worth adding to the family facts, just in case they are the correct family.
A note for Tracy (sorry I missed your query before) but Robert Meikle's parents were William b1733 in Lesmahagow and married Agnes Craig b1737, Avondale, dau. of John b1700 and Agnes Campbell.
William's parents were Robert b1706 who married Margaret Weir b1708. Robert's parents were Thomas and Bessie Couper, who I referred to at the start of this reply.
Hope this helps

Thomas Meikle b1670 Lesmahagow and Bessie Couper b1668 are my ancestors also through their son Robert. I have been able to get a copy of the Parish marriage record (12/14/1694) of Thomas & Bessie thru Scotland's People, but have never been able to find their birth records.
Barthonian - if you have copy of this I sure would appreciate you sending to me.
Thanks
