Post by: Bethan on Tuesday 07 July 09 10:40 BST (UK)
Please can someone tell me the name of Elizabeth Reed's husband, she married in Swansea in 1846, I took a look at Free BDM  but I cannot work out  who she married.?

Thank you for your time, best wishes Bethan

Hi :)

If you have Elizabeth's birth year and where approx. she was born you should be able to do a search in 1851 census using a variation of names, Davies, Hawes, Morgan or Morgans and see if that helps.

Hi Evie, unfortunately I do not have her birth year, I was hoping to find that she had married Evan Davies.
I am trying a bit of lateral thinking here for a friend in America.
His ggrandfather John Reed Davies was born somewhere in Wales in 1845, but he has no idea where, as Davies is such a common name the only way I could possibly find him is to find the reason for the middle name Reed, I came up with the idea that (a) either John was born before marriage or (b) his mother was a widow by the name of Reed who married again and the stepfather was a Davies.
I am afraid that I am clutching at straws because I have hit a brick wall, thank you anyway for your help and suggestion.

Best Wishes Bethan

Bethan

There are no births that I can see for a John Reed Davies. There are a few for John Rees Davies. Presumably it is definitely REED?

This is part of the problem I have, I cannot be 100% sure it is Reed because John Reed Davies had a son called Harry Reece Davies and it is quite possible that somewhere along the line there was a mistranscription of the name.
Do you have any John Reece or Rees Davies's born in 1845, I have a feeling that John came from a rural part of Wales because he was a farmer, but then again a lot of Wales was rural in those days!

Thank you so much for your interest, best wishes Bethan

Did John Reed Davies stay in Wales or did he emigrate to America?

He emigrated in 1868 according to the 1900 census, and he married in Pennslyvania

Hi Bethany

All the John Rees Jones's were born from 1848 onwards. There are no John Reece Jones's as far as I can see.

I have checked the 1910 US Census and it gives John's birthplace as "S. Wails Welch" (I can spell - this is the actual transcript!!). So we have a possible clue.

Per Genuki, in 1910 South Wales was reckoned to comprise Brecon, Cardigan, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Pembroke and Radnor (although I suspect that it may have been a somewhat loosely defined area).

But in theory , at least, John was born in one of these counties.

Not what you'd call rapid progress, I know!

Regards

Ivan

PS
The 1910 gives John’s “age last birthday” as 65, married 39 years, emigrated 1867

Hello, again, Bethany

Have you found, or tried to find, John's Marriage Certificate?

Hi Ivan, thank you for all your help you have both been very kind, I think that I will suggest looking for the wedding certificate to my friend, I think they were married in Pennslyvania as that is where thier first child was born and they either married in 1870 or 71, do you think that I would be able to get the details on ANCE.... as our local library has free access to that site?
I have found a John Davies on the IGI whose father is called Reece Davies, it appears the father emigrated to the USA, this John Davies came from South Wales and the birthdate matched, how did you get the 1910 census, I can only get the 1900 and 1920 on Family search?

Thank you again for all your help, very best wishes Bethan

Hi Bethan

I don't know where Ivan saw the 1910 census but you can see it on Ancestry if you have world wide subs if using the UK version. I am still trying to find an emigration record of John.

Hello Bethan

On familysearch.org, I found this family that could be yours.
John R Davies, age 37, born -- Wales
Clara Davies,  age 24 , born -- PA
Harry Reed Davies, age 6, born PA
Clara L Davies , age 4 , born IL

Source Information
Census Place --Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas
Family History Library Film   1254054
NA Film Number T9-0054
Page Number 322B

The family information was from the 1880 United States census. If I remember right, I seen a John R Davies birth or christening in 1843. I will try to retrace my search and maybe able to get back to you.

Thanks a lot Bob, it is the right family I had the information from the immigrants forum on this site, the fact that Clara the wife and the son Harry were born in Pennslyvania leads me to think that is where the marriage took place.
It also said on the 1900 that John emigrated in 1868, but what I am really trying to find out is where in Wales he originated, and Davies being such a common name means that I am finding it very difficult.

Thank you for your help, you are very kind
Very Best Wishes Bethan

Hi Ivan Gene is the friend that I am trying to help and he has asked me to try and find out what part of Wales Harry's Father John Reed or Reece Davies came from, unfortunately the information that he sent me is very patchy, but I will plod on regardless, thank you again for your help, at least now I know that John came from South Wales, I also found out this afternoon that Harry and Della were married in Washington Co. and not Pennsylvania as I thought.

Best Wishes Bethan
