Hi seacat and welcome to rootschat :D
Maybe they are in the 1881 census- you mention a death in c. 1885 so it would be worth a look.
1881 is online and free to search at familysearch site- on the home page the link is on LHS. That will give you a start.
There is also freebmd site which would gice definte years and locations for bdms.

hi charlotteCH,
thanks for replying- re census, have been there done that also looked up BMDs which has added to the puzzle-big time! I'm having trouble connecting the families together other than Stephen Hancock and Martha Hancock.

OK , sorry for suggesting what you have already checked but it's hard to know what has been looked at etc, and better suggest it than leave the obvious unstated :D

Hi Seacat,
This is easy to find Census entries for Stephen and Martha 1851/1861/1871 but no luck 1841. On 2 he is born Winscombe and the other Banwell.
1851 Census
Stepha Templar, 57, Martha,55, + children Hannah, 20,Elizabeth, 14, Sarah, 9
HO107/1937/68/3
They have grandson William born 1845, Winscombe, in 1861 Census with them. RG9/1675/56/2
Tracing William back to 1851 Census RG
His Father appears to be William born 1823.
Marriage;
William TEMPLAR
Elizabeth JEFFREY
March 1844
Axbridge 10 517
Even knowing this I can find no corresponding baptism for William 1823 on usual free sources. I was hoping his baptism would lead to other children of Stephen and Martha and hopefully back from then to link with other Templars you are seeking info on.
1871 Census
RG10/2464/29/6
Stephen TEMPLAR, head, mar,79,labourer
Martha, wife,mar,75
Annie ZELLEY,grand-daug,unm,13
Mellie.S.Zelley,grand-daugh,unm,11 (Name hard to read)
All born Winscombe
Nellie Sarah Zelley has baptism on Freereg 1859 but cant find anything else on them at this stage.
You probably have all this but must admit I am lost with trying to connect this lot without access to baptism datails ::)

Found them 1841 :), but there are probably children including William 1823 who have left home by this stage;
1841 Census
Winscombe,Somerset
HO107/968/10/Winscombe
John HANCOCK, 79, ag lab
Stephen TEMPLAR, 40, ag lab
Martha, 40
James, 15
Hannah, 10
Soloman, 7
Elizabeth, 4
Sarah, 1 All born in County
Cant find any baptisms for any of them ::)
There is a Robert HANCOCK and family, 55, living nearby, possible brother of Martha?

From Winscombe PRs - not sure if you have these
1797 May 21, Martha Highate, d/o John & ?? HANCOCK.
A John HANCOCK married Hannah PARKER 7 Jun 1786
Another John HANCOCK married Flower MARTIN 8 Oct 1787
Martha's parents probably John and Hannah, what with naming one of her daughters Hannah.
1818 Feb 4
TEMPLAR Stephen, otp
HANCOCK Martha, otp, banns
Wits: John HANCOCK, Mary GRANT, James HANCOCK
1819 Mar 14, John, s/o Stephen & Martha TEMPLAR, Winscombe, labourer, born Nov 26 1819 ??
1821 Dec 16, William, s/o Stephen & Martha TEMPLAR, Winscombe, labourer - buried 27 Jan 1823 aged 18mths

Hi Eyesee,
Please accept my apology, because of health reasons it has been ages since I looked at this site.
You have indeed assisted me as well as 'setting the cat among the pidgeons'.
I had the name Flower but not her surname or date of marriage- now you mention the other John Hancock and Hannah Parker ??????
Once again, my apologies.

Hi, I'm a descendant of William Templar and Mary Ann Lewis. William is the son of Robert Templar and Jane [Jenny] Day. I have wondered if they were connected to Stephen Templar, but so far I have been unable to find a link. The Templars must all be connected, they spell their surname with an A [Templ]a]r rather than the E as in Templ[e]r.
I suspect that Benoni Templar might be the father of Robert, but would hate to be quoted on that:-)
I do have a written tree titled, 'The Templar's of Axbridge' written by one of my cousins, [1st x 2 removed] Dr Peter Griffiths. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family?

HI, Over the years many- professional and amateur -have researched Stephen Templar looking for his parents etc. all without success.
Kind Regards,
Joan

Best wishes,
