Title: John McLaren, British Guyana
Post by: woiiftm on Sunday 05 July 09 17:36 BST (UK)
I'm trying to trace the birth and death of a John McLaren.
Census Cert for 1901 states he was born in Demerara, British Guyana, birth date approx 1862 as he was 39 for the census.
I know he was in Scotland at time of marriage in 1884 to an Elizabeth Edwards.
He was deceased by 1939 from details on his wifes Death Cert.
How do I find birth Cert details ?

Thanks

Gordon

His parents names should be shown in the marriage registration.

He's in the 1881 census  as a lodger with a Dobbie family in Glasgow Govan.  Aged 19, an engine fitter.

Hello ShaunJ and thanks for the response.

Traced his death Cert. Lists parents as a Peter McLaren and a Helen McAlpine.

I still can't find out how to find birth details as he was born in British Guyana.
Not sure if Parents emigrated / born there or came back.

Any thoughts on how to access Guyanese birth certificates ?

Also, apparently his father is listed as a Sugar Planter, any ideas what this actually is, eg foreman owner or hired hand ? and how I could find out more details ?

Thanks Again

Gordon

This looks like a useful resource but I can't see your McLarens:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyggbs/index.htm

Hello Clover10,

Apologies for exceptionally long delay in replying.

Not got a lot of info, only have his father as a Peter McLaren possibly born around the time of your James.
Unfortunately I've still not been able to trace their place of origin.

Cheers

Gordon
