Title: Three sisters who emigrated from Scotland
Post by: LisaHallworth on Sunday 05 July 09 13:15 BST (UK)
Hi guys,
I'd appreciate any help you can provide with my searches for these sisters. They are part of a fairly large family group in which the brothers all died young, or were killed in action in WW1.  The sisters emigrated - family stories tell us that Isabella  & Ann(e) Keay went from Scotland to Canada whilst Margaret Keay went to the USA (entry on the US board has perhaps found her in Washington, that's great!).

Their parents were John Keay and Mary Innes, who brought up their family in Perth, Perthshire where John was a Dyer.
The 1891 Census shows us the 3 girls living in Perth, Scotland: including Ann (born 1874, Irvine, Fifeshire. Occ Ironer).
A search of the Census in 1901 has shown our Ann had moved out of her parent's home, but Isabella's entry tells us she was born in Perth in 1884 (Occ. Tailoress).

I would guess that they travelled from Scotland to Canada around 1901-1925, although perhaps Ann travelled a little earlier. I would also expect that their trade would be something to do with clothing, e.g. Seamstress. We have no family tale of their having got married or having children - though that doesn't mean that they didn't?!!
It's also possible that they didn't settle permanently in Canada; they may have moved to be with their sister in the US.  :-\

Phew!  Any clues?
All the best from Lisa.

Hi Lisa,

I've found one of Isabel's passenger list entries. On it it states she is going to her sister Annie Keays' & it gives an address. If you would like to see it, private message me your e-mail & I'll send it.

Cordially,
Lisa

Hi again,

I think I've found a border crossing entry for Annie dated 1910, you may want it too.

Cordially,
Lisa

Just so we don't get any duplication of effort, a thread about the same family is on the US board here:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,390599.0.html

Isobel Keay arrived Quebec from Glasgow on the Athenia 11 June 1927.
She is single, 43, born Perth Scotland.  Occupation Linen Keeper.  In Canada previously from May 1907 to June 1921.  She is going to her sister Annie Keay at Upper Canada College, Toronto.  Isobel's nearest relative in Scotland is given as her aunt - Isobel Keay of 61 King's Park road, Cathcart, Glasgow.

There is also a record of Mrs. Marguert Dick crossing from New York State into Canada at Bridgeburg, Ontario on 27 Oct 1912.  She was born 1878, Scotland.  Bridgeburg is around Buffalo, Niagara Falls.  There is also another Margaret Dick, married to a William, who you can find a record of crossing around this point.

Is this yours?
I don't mind assisting and trying to find information but I do like to do it with all known information upfront.

Apologies Cosmac & Lisaw, and anyone else affected.

Yes, it is my site, and when I look at that entry again in light of what I know now, I have to hold my hands up & wonder why I didn't write some of them into my post on this forum - simply asking if anyone could embellish that, or add any alternatives.  It was certainly a mistake not to do so; I wrote in haste & now regret at leisure.

Long ago when I wrote up the 'clues' on my own site, I didn't think any of them were surely my ladies as some detail here or there didn't quite fit, and especially because I had been told that they all emigrated before the war. This seems now to be an over-simplification, to say the least.

Now that I have had more time to get experience - and especially since you folk have added more details - I can see perhaps they are my ladies, though of course I need to investigate further.

I can only tell you that I wanted to keep my post as short as I could - I know I do rather blather on; I didn't set out to deliberately annoy anyone. I also assumed that simply posting a link to my own site would be frowned upon (i.e. seen as touting for hits).  I am new at this site, and seem to have rather jumped in at the deep end.

Thanks for being so polite in your reprimand & I'll think much more carefully to avoid this in future.  :-[

Let's call this thread closed for further assistance from kind listers - I think I must sign up for the Ancestry worldwide free trial, now that I know there are such detailed records held there.

All the best for your own researches, Lisa
