Title: Marriage Lookup Request - Samuel Lewis
Post by: Jill Shaw on Thursday 02 July 09 12:17 BST (UK)
Re my earlier request for marriage look-up for Samuel Lewis, a relative abroad has sent me  a copy of his marriage to Elizabeth Hughes at the Independent Chapel in Northwich. 18/5/1858. His father is given as Robert Lewis (deceased).

Hi Jill,

I've moved and amended your post as it was on the pre 1837 marriage request thread and you are looking for marriages in the 1850's.

Firstly, it isn't possible to look up civil marriages in the same way you can look up a church marriage from the parish register.  You would have to send off for the certificate to get the information.

I would suggest that you send off for the birth certificate of one of the children that you know is from your family.  You will then have the mother's maiden name so that you are sure which is the correct marriage for your family.  You can then send off for the marriage certificate knowing that it will be the correct one.

Hope this helps,

Jean

Hi Jean,

Thanks for the advice. Is there any significance to it being a civil marriage?

Jill, on this page on CheshireBMD
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/cheshirebmd/marrcov.html
there's information on civil marriages and the later status of authorised person marriages for non-conformists.

Since my last post a relative abroad has sent me a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate -he married Elizabeth Hughes on what looks like 16th May 1858, at The Independent Chapel,  Castle Street (?), in the District of Northwich.

Samuel's father is named as Robert Lewis(deceased). So far, on FamilySearch Record Search Pilot Site I've found a Robert Lewis born Plemonstall 1718, a marriage there to Mary Pritchard and  burial at Frodsham 26th April 1858, but have no idea whether this is the right Robert.

I'd really like to find out if Samuel had a lot of siblings. According to the censuses there were many Lewis families living in close proximity in the Delamere/ Norley area and I wonder if and how they were related to one another.

I'd be glad of any help you're able to offer. Thanks.
Jil

You've spotted the 'deliberate' mistake. Robert was baptised Plemonstall in 1778.

I'm confident that I have Samuel on the censuses from 1851 onwards and probably 1841 as well, but I know there was another of the same name living in Norley where our Sam ended up. Ours was born at Little Budworth.
In 1851 aged 21 he was working on Fingerpost Lane as a servant to Elizabeth Lewis, widow,73, farmer of 14 acres. The family stayed on Fingerpost Lane for many years.
I wonder if there was a family connection between Elizabeth and Sam, or was the surname a coincidence? Eliz was born in Norley. I wonder who her husband was, and where from.
In 1841, however, a  Samuel of the right age(11) was living with Joseph Lewis and wife Sarah at Crowton. If this is the right Sam  perhaps his parents were both dead by this time.
