Hello,
Sarah Maud Gaylard b 1st October 1892 Somerset UK (can not confirm this on any BMD sites, info recieved from family) .
Sarah along with her parents(names unknown) and siblings William,Stanley,Jack,Gertrude and Lillian emigrated to Canada around 1900's (I carnt find them on ships lists).
Sometime around 1912 Sarah met and married Mark Prescott in Canada,Mark had been born in Liverpool c1889,he was in Candian army at the time of his marriage. The Newlyweds returned back to UK around 1914/15 and settled In Wirral Cheshire raising 3 children -the births for the children are on BMD web sites.
Would like to find some extra info on the Gaylard family while in Canada and researching Candian Army Archives - Dont how Mark came tobe in the Candian Army, how to find the marriage cert.
Cheers
Dolly

You can order Manitoba certificates from this site.

Link to search the 1911 census for the rest of the family. There is another family in Selkirk but they seem to have emigrated earlier.

Maud arrived in Quebec from Liverpool 1 Sept 1910 on the Empress of Ireland. Her destination was Winnipeg, domestic. Notation that she was going to her brother ....?

Link to Mark Prescott's WWI attestation papers - shows Maud as his next of kin.
If Bernard Stanley was Maud's brother you can also find his papers at this site as well and it lists Samuel Joseph as his father.
Debbie
-
If Samuel Joseph was Maud's father his death is found in the Manitoba Vital Statistics link
Died at 71 31/01/1936 at RM Louise - not sure what or where that is
Rosalie Rebecca died at 74 at same location 04/09/1937.
You can link a marriage between these two through FreeBMD.
Debbie
RM stands for Rural Municipality and Louise the name of it. If you google it you will find a map to its location
-
Online ancestry trees don't seem to have the same children listed for Samuel and Rosalie as your list - probably not yours.
Perhaps this is the brother that Maud was going to when she emigrated? He was a coachman and that is what her brother's occupation seems to be on the ship's record
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=33064&highlight=39&desc=1911+Census+of+Canada+page+containing+John+Gaylort
What are the ages of Maud's siblings and did they go by middle names as she seemed to do?
Have you checked the 1911 British census for them?

I found a brief obituary in the 9 Sep 1937 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press for Mrs. S.J. Gaylard. She had lived in Pilot Mound, Manitoba at the time of her death. It mentions that she was survived by four sons, Norman and Ernest in England and Bernard and Cyril in the Pilot Mound area. There is no mention of daughters in the obituary. If you would like a copy please PM me your email address.

Hello,
Thank you sooo much for the other information - the Attestation Papers for Mark Prescott, the address he gives for West Kirby Cheshire I can confirm is correct as his father is living there on the 1911 UK census .
Maud Gaylard - patchy info I have from the family, thanks for the Birth Reg in Dec 1892,I will say that it is her, as her birth date is 1st OCT 1892 and appears the surname have been mistranscribed,I did do few searches using alternative spellings I drew a blank(!).
I will back back onto those web links you posted and delve further !
You have been very kind and generous with your time
Many thanks
Dolly.

I have a Samuel Joseph Gaylard born in 1865 in Stoke Sub Hamdon in Somerset. He married a Rosalie Rebecca Hill in 1891 in Kingston, Surrey.
Samuel's father, also Samuel, had moved his family to Surrey at some point as there are records of his son Henry and 3 daughters showing there presence around Chertsey, Woking and Guildford. Henry dies in Horsham where I now live though we are in fact unrelated.
I have 3 sons for Samuel Joseph,
Norman Samuel (Q1 1892 - Surbiton, Surrey)
Alfred Ernest (Q4 1893 - Surbiton, Surrey)
Bernard Stanley (16/9/1895 - Wisley, Surrey)
Bernard's birth in Wisley; Wisley is a small little village near Woking off the main road from Guildford to London, running near to Surbiton. Wisly is however famous for its Royal Horticultural Gardens and exhibitions.
The 1901 England Census has this family living in Pyrford, Surrey. I believe that I found that their farm was just a matter of 100-200 yards from the RHS gardens but I would have to re-check this to be certain.
Norman Samuel married a Gertrude Goddard in 1916 in Farnham, Surrey, a few miles down the road near Aldershot. They had two sons Geoffrey and Peter. Bothe these sons were Blenheim pilots and were killed within weeks of each other in WWII.
Here is an account concerning Peter: Two Blenheims left Banff Shetland at 09.45. Their desination was Trondheim harbour. They were attacked by 2 Bf 109G from J.G. 77. The Blenheim L9408 QY-F piloted by Pilot Officer Gaylard was shot down with no survivors. Gaylard, Burran and Wicks were buried in a marsh at the crash site near Hemnekjolen but were reinterred later at Stavne Cemetery. The wreck is still extant and can be viewed at http://home.no.net/kjellsor/lysvollhaugen.html
There are references in the London Gazette for him
Albert Ernest married Dora Byde in Guildford and they had 2 sons and a daughter.
Now, Sarah Maud Gaylard was born in 1892 in Taunton, Somerset. This puts her in the same year as Norman, albeit 9 months away it is possible. The fact that she was born in or near Taunton makes the link between them unlikely.
But there again I can find no record of a Cyril Gaylard either. So if you can tell me a bit more about him maybe I can help dig further.
-
Did you find the names of Sarah Maud's parents, either from the Brtish birth certificate or the Manitoba marriage?
Debbie
-
No I have not found Sarah's parents but I am convinced that she is not related to Norman, Ernest and Bernard. The birthplace is wrong and she is not with this family on the 1901 census as you would expect.
-
Hi,
I have been sidetracked from the Gaylard's these last few weeks - I will send for the birth cert for Sarah Maud -I will post the parents names on here and see if there is any link.
Cheers
Dolly.
-
Excellent. I am doing a One Name Study of the Gaylard name so if you find her parents I may well be able to take that back further for you
-
But there again I can find no record of a Cyril Gaylard either. So if you can tell me a bit more about him maybe I can help dig further.
Cyril, 12, sailed to Canada on the Megantic which arrived in Quebec on 4 May 1914. He was travelling with his mother, Rosalie and brother, Bernard. Here's a link to the passenger list at Library and Archives Canada:
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e144/e003596403.jpg
There is a birth in the Free BMD for a Cyril Edgar Gayland that was registered in the 4th quarter of 1901 in Chertsey, Surrey (Vol 2a, Page 64). The actual page in the FreeBMD does say Gayland but it is possible the actual certificate could be Gaylard.
By the way, I've sent you a personal message, mgaylard.

How on earth did I miss that?
Thank you Jacquie that was very kind of you

Maud arrived in Quebec from Liverpool 1 Sept 1910 on the Empress of Ireland. Her destination was Winnipeg, domestic. Notation that she was going to her brother ....?
I found a passenger list which has a William Gaylard arriving in Montreal on the Southwark on 23 May 1908. His destination is listed as Winnipeg. Here's a link to the image at Library and Archives Canada (line 18):
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e147/e003668227.jpg
There is an Archibald Stanley Gaylard who arrived in Quebec on the Royal George on 21 Jun 1911. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC (line 2):

His destination is listed as Winnipeg.
In case you don't have them, here's a link to the Attestation Papers for Archibald S. Gaylard:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/06xo/
He lists his next of kin as W.W. Gaylard, Somerton, Somerset, England.
I found the passenger list where he returns from WWI. He was on the Grampian which arrived in St. John, New Brunswick on Grampian. His next of kin is listed as his mother and his residence as Vancouver. Here's a link to the passenger list at LAC (first name right hand side of page):

At the BC Archives website (http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-48160F3/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths) there is a marriage for Archibald S Gaylard and Muriel Grace Harbour in Vancouver on 3 Sep 1923. There are also deaths for Archibald Stanley Gaylard in Vancouver on 16 Jul 1960 and Muriel Grace Gaylard in Vancouver on 26 Jan 1986. I don't know if this the right one but there is a William Henry Gaylard who died 31 Mar 1962 in Victoria who was the right age to be your William.
There are people here and at the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website who do look-ups for these type of records. I think the marriage and death registrations should be able to confirm the maiden surname of their mother.

Hello Jacquie,
Many thanks for those extra links -am still looking for Sara Maud on the 1901 census,I have a feeling she may have been " farmed" out as she was one of 12 children !.
Thanks for your interest and help.
Cheers

William Walter Henry Gaylard and Alice Maud Chinnock are the parents of a Stanley William Gaylard born on 4th February 1916 in Edmonton, North London; I have a copy of the birth certificate.
But WWH was supposed to have gone to Canada in 1908.
So, did he come back for the war? Did he just come back? Is the William on the 1908 passenger list the same one?
A Ruth Viola Gaylard shows up in a "Gaylard" search on the BC index. Has anyone an idea of who she is?

William Walter Henry Gaylard and Alice Maud Chinnock are the parents of a Stanley William Gaylard born on 4th February 1916 in Edmonton, North London; I have a copy of the birth certificate.
I found an incoming UK passenger list that has Alice (29) and Olive (2) Gayland departing from Montreal and arriving in Glasgow on the Pretorian on 21 Jun 1915. The passenger list has Castle Cany, Somerset listed under their entry.
I found a passenger list at Find My Past that has Alice (38, housewife), Olive (11) and Stanley (6) Gaylard departing from Liverpool on the Doric on 15 July 1924. Their last residence in England was 58 South Road, West Kirby. It says their country of last permanent residence was England and their future country of permanent residence was Canada.

Hi,
Am more confused than ever !,
Who is this William Walter Henry Gaylard ? is it the same Walter who is the father to the Sarah Maud Gaylard ? Did this William remarry to Alice Chinnock ?.
The Address in West Kirby is interesting as Sarah on her return from Canada in 1915 with her husband Mark Prescott settled in Acaica Grove West Kirby.
Cheers
Dolly.
-
We seem to have two separate Gaylard families mixed together. I can understand your confusion.
The William Walter married to Olive is a different William from the one who was Sarah Maud's father. It might be her brother but I'm not sure.
Jacquie
-
Hi Jaquie,
Think your correct - the families have become entwined and its proving a little difficult to seperate them !!. I will plod on with them and see if I can ever seperate them !.
Cheers for now .
Dolly.

If you write down the information regarding the names in which you are interested...ie numbers, names, dates from the B.C. BMD and then change the very first query subject line to B.C. Lookup please / Gaylard then someone will see it and answer ....
You could also drop a few of these a line or two
http://www.canpages.ca/ps/list.jsp?lang=0&ty=N&fna=&lna=GAYLARD&ct=&ctn=&mt=&pr=BC&st=&pc=&ph=&rec=1&recc=1&ln=&dbg=&w=&ri=

Sarah's brother Archibald StanleyGaylard emigrated to Quebec on 31/5/1911 aged 17, sailing via the Royal Line Canadian Northern Steamships vessle "Royal Edward".
He married Muriel Grace Harbour on 3/9/1923 in Vancouver and died 16/7/1960 also in Vancouver.
Sarahs oldest brother William Walter Henry Gaylard also emigrated to Canada, he married Alice Maud Chinnock and had a son Stanley Wiklliam gaylard in 1916 in Edmonton.
WWH Gaylard died in 1962 in Victoria BC.
Most of Sarah's other siblings were married in England.
-
Hi JJ & Mgaylard,
JJ - Thanks for the help - I will rehash my Subject Title Line .
Mgaylard -Thanks for the info on William Walter Henry that he was Sarah's brother, has been a little confusing sorting out "who is who" ! - I believe that Sarah and some of her siblings may have been "farmed" out as her parents struggled to feed etc all 12 siblings .
If its ok, I would like to add those extra marriage details onto my tree ?.
Cheers
Dolly.
