Hi All
I think from family chat......
William Selby Blair died in Mildura, Vic. in the 1950's
He was married to Hannah Elizabeth Coulson in 1912 in Qld. but was in Victoria a few years later.
I cannot see a birth for him in Qld
Is anyone able to see this death/birth as I am searching for his parents names and will get cert if possible.
There is every likliehood he was born in Scotland, but would like to eliminate one thing at a time :D
Thanks ,
Sue

Hi Sue,
I see there was William Selby BLAIR buried at Cheltenham Old Cemetery aged 74, unfortunately I do not see a date. :'(
He appears on the Electoral Roll for Queensland in 1913 and then in Vic by 1936 Sandringham. I do note the birth of a William Selby BLAIR in Ipswich in Suffolk Sep 1889 4a 792.
If it is same person he would have died about 1963 which does not quite fit with the family lore
There is an immigration record for
BLAIR Mr W S departing London 30 Sep 1908 aboard the MARATHON ticketed to Melbourne. He was aged 19 (a clerk) Country of last permanent residence England - intended permanent residence in Australia.
Traveling with
BLAIR Mr M 44 Typist
BLAIR Miss M C 16
BLAIR Miss J H 11
The occupations seem wrong (I note William Selby BLAIR is an Engineer on the electoral roll entries) but William Selby BLAIR from Ipswich was the son of Mathew S BLAIR (an electrical engineer) and Amelia J. 1901 sisters Mary C 8 and Jessie H 4 so I think it is the same family ;D
Hopefully someone will help further with the death.
Cheers Kris :)
PS Good one Mandy - fits with what I have found.
-
By the way Sue,
Mathew S BLAIR aged 36 in 1901 was born in Roxburghshire Scotland according to the census ;D
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Sue
Just in case you haven't got it:
Hannah Elizabeth BLAIR d 1957, MILD, father Herber (sic) Coulson, Mother Sarah Regan, aged 73. Reg 22587
Oh the naughty man - fancy marrying again LOL ;)
Cheers, Judith
-
Hi Judith
Thank you.
It was the very common old classic story of him being absolutely helpless in the domestic area and hiring a housekeeper to help and one thing leading to another ;) ;)
I'm not sure I even have her details as she was totally not spoken of.
As always, his first wife "was a wonderful, wonderful woman" :-X

Hi All
The immigration details above from Kris, show this group arriving 1908..
BLAIR
Father Mr.M. [Mathew] aged 44
Son. Mr W [William] aged 19
Daughters.
Miss M. [Mary C.] aged 16
Miss J. H. [Jessie]
Their mother and wife AMELIA JANE BLAIR [nee WHALEBONE] is not showing.
There is a death in England of one Amelia Jane Blair Sept 1/4 1907 8c 362 at Barton I. which is in Lancashire. This is probably her. But not certainly
My requests are,
Does anybody know of a death for AMELIA JANE BLAIR [f. Thomas, m. possibly Charlotte] in Victoria after 1908. In case I have missed her on the immigration.
Does anybody know of marriages/deaths for the daughters..
Mary C. Blair [f.Mathew Selby m. Amelia Whalebone]
Jessie H. Blair [as above]

Interesting Sue nothing in Victoria to 1942 will check further though and nothing in Qld to 1929
William Selby Blair seems to go back and forth to Qld by the rolls....
William Selby Blair Male 1913 Queensland electorate of Lilley Toombul
William Selby Blair Male 1914 Victoria Kooyong Hawthorn
William Selby Blair Male 1919 Queensland Lilley North Pine
William Selby Blair Male 1924, 1931, 1936 Victoria Henty Sandringham
Can't even seem to find Matthew Blair on the rolls.

Hi Sue,
I think the girls may be
Mary Charlotte Jun 1892 Chelmsford 4a 492
Jessie Hardie Mar 1897 Edmonton 3a 479
There is an earlier Jessie Hardie Jun 1891 Chelmsford 4a 497 - Dec 1892 Chelmsford aged 1 4a 231
There is a Mary Charlotte BLAIR in the Vic Electoral Rolls unmarried in 1936 at 305 Carlisle St St Kilda (clerk) a couple of previous for her
1914 Grafton St Elstonwick (Clerk)
1919 40 Charnwood Rd St Kilda (Clerk)
1931 305 Carlisle St (Clerk)
she is the only Blair present in each entry
It may help with marriage/deaths
Cheers Kris :)

I found a Jessie H Blair marrying in NSW to Robert Lewis Campbell GREAM
on her death details on the Ryerson she had Haldane as a middle name
Going by Kris's information it may rule her out,
Jenn
-
Thank you Kris and Jenn.
The name Jessie Hardie Blair will be correct as this was the maiden name of her Grandmother [Matthew's mother]....married in Scot. 1863.
Wonder if Mathew Selby Blair went home to Eng.
Perhaps neither girl married after all.
Great help. Thanks.

The birth for Amelia Jane is Dec qr 1864, reg Ipswich, Suffolk 4a p551
As Kris posted, there is the birth for:
a William Selby BLAIR in Ipswich in Suffolk Sep 1889 4a 792.
1891 census at 2 Claremont Terrace, Moulsham, Chelmsford, Essex,

IGI shows a birth of
William Selby BLAIR, 9 April 1864 at Cavers, Roxburgh, scotland, parents William Blair, Jessie Hardie
and a marriage for William and Elisabeth Hardie at Castleton, Roxburgh 25 Dec, 1863, (I note name difference in wife from the parent named above.)
Cheers, Judith
-
Hi Judith,
Thank you.
I also see IGI exract as follows
Marriage. Jessie Hardie to William Blair 7/7/1863 at Falkirk, Stirling Scot.
The birth I see extrcted is
Birth 9/4/ 1864
Mathew Selby Blair
Place- Cavers , Roxburgh, Scot.
Father- William
mother- Jessie Hardie
So, a bit mysterious!!
Sue
Adding.
If we wanted to keep the child's conception inside the marriage, I would vote for the July 1863 marriage ;) ;)

Hi Robyn and Jenn,
No, I did not have Mary Charlotte's burial. Thank you Robyn
She must have joined her sister in SA at some stage after 1931.
Yes, poor Gordon. A family tradgedy I'm afraid.
Ahappy searching day for me.

No doubt Sue you had a search of the newspapers but have added the link, it sounds as if he was a brave lad.
The newspaper article is hard to read but in the following year it does have a memorium and says he drowned while attempting to save another.

Matthew Selby Blair was my great grandfather with my grandmother, Jessie, being the youngest child of Amelia and Matthew. Matthew remarried in Adelaide Australia and had two more children William the eldest child of Matthew and Amelia lived and worked in Melbourne and was involved with the design of the first skyscrapers built there. Mary or Mamie as she was known, worked for a leading solicitor in Melbourne, but never married. She moved to Mt Gambier, South Australia, in retirement and lived her remaining years with her younger sister Jessie Hanel and is buried in the Mt Gambier cemetery. Jessie moved from Adelaide to Hatherleigh near Mt Gambier, and married Louis Hanel a pastoralist. They had 5 boys and 1 girl with my father being the eldest. Hope this clears up a few questions raised.
Cheers Ian
