Post by: macmoffat on Sunday 28 June 09 23:07 BST (UK)
interested in the Lumsden name.

1881 Census:
Mary Lumsden is recorded  aged 65 Born 1816 Samuelston. Mother in Law to George Forrest  b.1851 Portobello. Who married her
Daughter Agnes b1851 All living in Leith.
Mary is an annuitant. which is?
I presume that Marys husband ? had died??And that she moved to be with her daughter and grandchildren.
Are  Lumsdens associated with E.Lothian?.

New to this board . . .

There are some Lumsdens associated with East Linton and Prestonkirk.  Mention is made of a Lumsden family in a book called "By the Linn Rocks."  If you'd like I can do a look-up for you.

The name caught my eye because my East Lothian-born great-grandfather had it for a middle name:  Alexander Lumsden Lamond (or Lamont).  His parents lived and worked at Nether Hailes when he was born in 1880.  They were members of the Prestonkirk at the time and I suspect that someone with the surname of Lumsden may have been a benefactor or baptismal sponsor for the family.

My gt-grandmother was born Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Lumsden Baird - I'm trying to find out where the "Lumsden" came from, there, too.  Her mother was Janet "Jessie" Beveridge, and her mother is marked in my tree as Elizabeth Lumsden, ... but the information I found in the IGI was that this Elizabeth's father was William Beveridge, b. abt 1790 (so I'm not sure I haven't mis-transcribed something!), and her mother was Janet Lyall - I'm searching for birth records and an earlier marriage for Janet, to try to make sense of it.
