Would anyone help with a look up on the "William Rodger" arriving Sydney from Glasgow 26/09/1838
Family name; CRAIGIE
Robert, Elizabeth and 4 children William Walter Jane & Elizabeth
I have that Elizabeth died in quarantine station at North Heads - Is this correct?
Where would I look?
I have that Robert married a Janet Haddow in 1839 to look after the baby!
Any assistance would help. Thank you.

Hi,

Man:CRAIGIE ROBERT
Woman:HADDOW JANET

Thanks List,
It is the surrounds about the death at quarantine Station that eludes me now.
Was she sick and taken to hospital? and Robert married again - strange setup.

Dear Lee,
This site mentions the "William Rodger"
http://www.manlyquarantine.com/Residents_before_1900.htm
http://www.manlyquarantine.com/History_1837.htm
As this site mentions how many died on board and at the Quarantine Station, there is a possibility that the Friends of the Q Station may have a list of these deaths. At the bottom of this page there are contact numbers for the Friends Society.
http://www.manlyquarantine.com/FroQS%20membership%20form.html
Also, Walter and Robert are mentioned on http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Search.aspx (Using Keyword Craigie)
Cheers

Thanks again Siouxsie,
Will contact the members of 'Friends of the QS'
I have to fill a void perhaps you could assist,
I have Elizabeth arrived on 'William Rodger' 26/9/38
I have Robert married Janet Haddow 25/5/1839
I have Elizabeth died 1840
1st; Can I get information from the death cert without buying a copy?
2nd Would Janet Haddow have come in as an immigrant?
3rd Was there a Census in 1841 which I could look into?

1842/43 Citizen Roll for Brisbane Ward, City of Sydney has Robert Craigie rateable property - house, Sussex St.
1845/6 Roll of Electors, Electoral Roll for Sydney, Gipps Ward, shows Robert Craigie, dwelling house, Crescent St.
1848/9 and 1849/50 same as 1845/6 with Walter CRAIGIE listed at same address
1851/2 Roll of Electors, Electoral Roll for Sydney, Bourke Ward, shows Robert Craigie, dwelling house, Castlereagh St.
The index I have access to is supposed to cover to 1864 but there are no more entries for Robert or Walter after 1851/2. They are the only ones with that surname on this index. Women, of course, are not voters so can't tell if Janet was with him.
There are some entries on Sydney Sands and McDougall Directories up to 1876 but that's forty years after he arrived - could be a descendant. The Robert mentioned is living in Glebe and has 'fancy bazaar' next to his name - the mind boggles ::)
Cheers, Judith
-
Thanks Judy, I will keep an open mind - but 'bazaar' must be another family!!!!
Lee
-
No, Lee, it is in the bit where many entries have a person's occupation so heaven knows - maybe his job was selling at a market??
Also I've found some refs to the ship but it is spelt 'William Roger' at times - just to make us look up twice >:(
If you look at the National Library digitised newspapers - seach using combinations of "William Roger" and quarantine you'll see some refs - none that help you in you particular search but interesting.
http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home
I couldn't find any reference to a passenger list anywhere. :( Nor could I find a Janet Haddow, that would fit, anywhere. Unfortunately the shipping records before 1839 are a bit sketchy. She could have been born in Australia or have emigrated. What refs I saw for "Janet Haddow' were all women from Scotland but no way of knowing if they belong to this family.
Looking as though buying a cert or two may be the way to go.

Yes Judith, I find the quarantine centre very informative and interesting.
I thought perhaps if Elizabeth was sick, and Janet had also been on the ship, he may have 'made friends' quickly so as to have a 'child minder' on hand.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi,
This looks like Robert's death
Registration : 2905
Year: 1876
Name:CRAIGIE ROBERT
Father: WILLIAM

District: GLEBE
It appears that Robert and Janet had 3 children (two called Isabella)
Registration: V18451174 48
Year :1845
Name: CRAIGIE ISABELLA
Father: ROBERT
Mother:JANET
Registration: V1841519 45A
Year :1841
Name: CRAIGIE ROBERT
Father: ROBERT
Mother: JANET
Registration: V18496471 45C (This would be the christening record)
Year: 1849
Name: CRAIGIE ISABELLA J
Father: ROBERT
Mother: JANET
Registration: V184915 50 (This would be the birth record)
Year: 1849
Name: CRAIGIE ISABELLA J
Father: ROBERT
Mother: JANET
There is no district entered for the above records.
with Robert (son) dying
Registration: 2601

Name: CRAIGIE ROBERT
Father: ROBERT

(Strangely there is no death record in NSW for Isabella so I can't account for the two Isabella's)
There doesn't appear to be a death record for Janet up to 1940, however there is a possible marriage record for a Janet Craigie (as the middle initial is I.......I wonder if her middle name was Isabella?)
registration: 7427
Year: 1900

Woman: CRAIGIE JANET I
District: WOOLLAHRA
Her possible death (however if this is her, she would have been very very old)

Father: JAMES
Mother: (No entry)

Thank you again Siouxsie and Kris,
It is just great to have you finding so much information.
I am going to put it together and write up my sheets
So exciting. Lee
-
Dear Lee,
Do you have the information about his children from his first marriage? If not, head to the NSW BDM's and you can look up their marriages, deaths, births of their children etc.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm
I know what you mean about exciting when you get a whole bunch of information........it's fabulous!! :D :D :D
Enjoy putting it all togther and putting flesh onto your ancestor's history.
Cheers
