We have just published a new book about the village ... about 130 pages of village history, carefully researched and illustrated. It covers many local families, the history of their properties, and so on.
It is a second volume ... the first being published 20 years ago by four friends (I'm one of them !) ... and so much new info came forward that we collected it all together and have written a second volume.
PM me if you'd like more details or to buy a copy ...
-
Are there any Yearsleys in your book?
-
Not from memory ... but I'll check ... just off to bed !
Watch this space ...

Hi, could you please tell me how I may get hold of a copy of the book - my local library did a book search for me last year and came across a book called Penallt a village miscellany, is this the first book to which you refer. If so I found it completely enthralling as my ancestors, the Frost and Griffiths family both lived in Penallt from the late 1700 onwards and some of them were mentioned in the book. Could you possibly tell me whether any mention is made in the new book of these two families or the property the Frostlands.
-
If you PM me your address, I can get one sent to you ... (unless you are local), in which case its on sale in the two independent Monmouth book-shops, and in Monmouth Museum. £15 per copy.
Yes, 'Penallt, a Village Miscellany' (dreadful title !) was the first book, and we still have a few copies left at £10 ...
The second book largely covers completely different material ... but a George Griffiths is mentioned, as is Frostlands, but only in passing. You may find other information of interest ... buy a copy !!
No Yearsleys mentioned, Greygirl ...

PAUL ... sorry; just realised you have only made two postings on here ... you need to make three or more before the personal message (PM) thing kicks in (its a way of stopping unwanted block mailings).
If you make one more posting on this thread, (or another) you can then PM me !
Sorry about that !

Hi
Just wondering how I can get hold of a copy of the original book as it has some great stories about my ancestors. My Great Great Aunt was Sarah Griffiths (nee Frost) who you mention in the book was known as the Witch of Tregagle.
I am fairly local so I will either pop up to Monmouth to get a copy or if you could possible let me know the names of the local bookshops I might ask them to post one to me.

Paul ... the original book (The Miscellany) isn't in the book shops ... but if you PM me, I can let you have the phone number of the elderly gentleman who keep the remaining few ... they are £10.
The new book (£15) is available in the Monmouth BookShop (half way up Monnow Street, on the left as you go up the hill) or at the Museum (at the top of town, also on the left, after the turning to the castle)
Alternately, you could get copies of both books from the gent I mentioned; he'd love to have a chat about old Penallters !
-
OK Paul ... so you aren't actually Paul, you're female, with twins !
It was good to meet you today, and share some FH.
Get your friend to join RootsChat ... she sounds as though she will enjoy it !
I'll let you know more about the Penallt parish history day, and also about the trip to St Fagans ...

Hi,
Just found this site and am trying it out! I'm interested in Penallt history, particularly anything on Rosser family. For example anything on the plaque in the Old Church in memory of Thomas C Rosser Royal Navy, son of William and Sarah.
Would like to get hold of both books.
-
Welcome Rydwin, to Rootschat ... I hope you can make full use of the expertise from all over the world gathered together into the best FH site there is !
If you make a couple more postings on (for e.g.) this board, we can exchange PM messages ... (by clicking the little green scroll) and I can then let you know my email/address and you can tell me yours and we can sort out book purchase !
If you are anywhere near, we are having a 'family history' session about the war memorials in Penallt Old Church on Sat 7th Nov, from about 1.15 ... with a talk by another RC person (Warresearcher I think he is called on here !) ... and the parish records will be available to search. (The meeting isnt to be held in the Old Church ... we have no loo !))
Let me know if you are able to attend, (unless you live in Australia !) and I'll send you more details ...
But firstly, make a few more postings, then we can communicate by PM !!
-
Thank you Lydart,
I'm about 50 miles away so the 7th November is a 'probable'!
-
I got your PM ... let me know if you got mine ... if you didnt get it, make another posting on this thread and we should then be in business !
-
Good to meet some new RootsChatters at the parish records day last weekend.
I think we may have another around November next year, so will post info next year !
Keep in touch ... and if there is anyone new wanting the book(s) ... let me know ...
-
Hi Sian
I'm also descended from the same Sarah Griffiths (nee Frost). Any chance we could discuss and share information? Thanks, David.

Hello Lydart
I'd also like to buy a copy of 'Penallt, a Village Miscellany', and two copies of the more recent publication. I'm not local, so could you let me have the contact details for "the elderly gentleman" as well.
Many thanks,
David

The sales of our local history book(s) are going well ... thanks to RootsChat several people have PM'd me, and have bought books.
Thank you all ...
... and we still have both volumes available !
-
I would also be interested in obtaining copies of both books. My gggg-grandfather was George Robbins (1783 - 1859).
-
I'll PM you Ariconium ... we still have copies of both available.
-
I would like copies of both books too please Have only just joined this site so not sure of the process. My grandfather was Earnest Morgan who had a shop on Penallt.
-
Hello !
You need to make two more posts before you can use the personal message (PM) system ... then I can PM you as to how to contact the elderly gentleman who is holding the stock of books !
The shop at Penallt by Croes Vane closed about 25 years ago :(
If you are near to Penallt, then we are also having a Records day in November ... see a separate thread ... which might interest you.
-
Thank you so much for your help. My Aunt Nora Meredith used to keep the shop too and is mentioned in Penallt Revisited which I bought yesterday in a book shop in Monmouth. It was a fascinating read. I would be interested in the records event ... my daughter-in-law is researching the family tree and would love to come too if possible.
-
I remember her !
So if you've got Penallt Revisited, do you still want both books, or just the first one ?
(In answering this, you will have made a third posting, and you'll be able to use and receive PM's !)
-
I would love any books on Penallt. I have just bought Penallt Revisited in the book shop in Monmouth but would love the Miscellany and any others that are available. I was born in Redbrook and had a job in the village shop when I was at school ... the Kerridges were my employers and I helped to put up the deliveries for Penallt ... 46 years ago! I My Grandparents (Mr and Mrs E Morgan) lived at Cherry Orchard, Lone Lane until moving to Maryland in the fifties. I would be very grateful if you can point me in the riight direction for the books.
Thank you.
-
I've sent you a PM with the details of how to get the books ...
Do come to our family history day in November if you can !
-
Hi,
I've just found rootschat since starting looking into family tree - I'd love to get hold of copies of both books and I'm wondering if there is anywhere I could buy copies this weekend? (I no longer live nearby but will be returning for a visit).
Many thanks!
-
Sorry Billy ... didn't get to the computer yesterday !
Welcome to Rootschat by the way.
You can buy both books via me ... BUT you need to make two more postings before you can use the PM system (personal messages) ... this stops spam somehow ! You just need to make two postings on this thread, for e.g., saying something daft will do ! Once you can PM, I'll tell you how to contact me or the elderly gentleman who is selling them here in the village.
You can either buy them from him in person, or he can post them to you.
-
thanks Lydart I'll post another one here .... and
-
and another one here and...wait a minute.... and
-
This thread is for the commercial offering of a book - it shouldnt really be on the main boards and I turned a blind eye for a while - but it is getting out of hand.
PLEASE CONTACT LYDART BY PERSONAL MESSAGE IF YOU WISH TO PURCHASE A COPY OR HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.
YOU MIGHT NEED TO POST TWICE TO USE THE PM SYSTEM - BUT THAT JUST MEANS JOINING THE MAIN BUSINESS OF ROOTSCHAT (WHICH IS THE WHOLE POINT!!)
Many thanks
