Title: Alfred Richard Clarke dock pilot
Post by: annwi on Thursday 25 June 09 09:27 BST (UK)
I am trying to find information about my grandfather Alfred Richard Clarke and his family. He was married to Rosina Augusta Maud Clarke in1906. I think he was born about 1883 in Penarth  but I cannot find his birth. He was a dock pilot and lived in Barry but I cannot find his details in the pilots information held in Cardiff records office. I would be grateful for any help as I know nothing about his early life or family.

have you found him on the 1911 census to confirm age and place of birth?

Do you have his marriage certificate to find out his father's name & occupation?

Yes I have the marriage certificate.I have a copy of a birth certificate but the name is Charles Alfred Clarke  the date of birth and place  of birth is correct also the father's name Alfred is correct. However, my grandfather is called Alfred Richard on his marriage certificate and Charles A in 1911 census. Quite confusing. I am not sure where to find details of his dock pilot career as I feel this might help to fill in some gaps.

Do you have him on any census? This looks like the family
55 Station Rd South, Cadoxton Juxta Barry RG12/4406 folio 107 pg 53
Alfred R Clarke head mar 45 boatman something dock pilot b. Chester City
Jane wife 32 b. cardiff
Elizabeth dau 14 b. Cardiff
Chas A son 7 b. Penarth
Maud dau 6 b. Penarth
Ambrose B son 5 b. Penarth
Sarah dau 4 b. Penarth
Albert E son 2 b. Penarth
Minniedau 11 months b. Penarth
Thomas HIll wife's father widower 69 b. Bristol

so Elizabeth possibly the daughter of an earlier marriage

marriage reg
Alfred R Clarke sept qtr 1882 Cardiff vol 11a pg 438 with Jane Hill on the same page

1901 10 Kingsland Cres, Barry RG13/4993 pg 149 pg 37
Alf R Clarke head mar 53 boatman b. Cheshire, Chester

If he was registered as Charles Alfred and shows up later as Charles A, perhaps the marriage cert has an error?

Many thanks. I agree this looks like the family. I had originally rejected this info because of the name problems but other facts fit in with the little I know. By the way he was Alfred Richard on his death cert and in a book I have of his. I know pilot records have detailed descriptions of anyone listed but I cannot find him in the Cardiff record office though his name (A R C) appears in Angelfire.Any ideas where else to look?

have you tried the school records at the Cardiff record office as well? Checked parish records for family baptisms?

What about contacting Bob Sanders from Angelfire? The site says he won't do lengthy research, but he might be able to tell you where he found the mention of Alfred.

http://www.glamorganfamilyhistory.co.uk/maritime/

there's info on the site about researching as well. There's another site mentioned on Bristol Channel pliots which now seems to be shut down, but there's contact details for the compiler Phil Roderick.

I have just seen your posting regarding the above.
My grandfather is Ambrose Benjamin Clarke (son) born 17/9/1885,he was also a pilot as was his first son, my uncle.
His sister Maud married Edward Rice, they also lived in Barry.
I would be interested to know your family line.
When my grandfather was born the family were living at 11 Dock street Penarth.
Hope this is of help and look forward to your response !
