Hi Mandy
The plot thickens, no wonder I couldnt find William's birth, he was born in Ireland, just found it on family search.
Well Barbara certainly kept herself busy.
Thanks for all your help :)

Hi,
I know this is an old thread but it seems to cover some of the ground I'm covering now
Daniel McGown born in Airdrie 29th Oct 1867 (illegitimate) to Daniel Mcgown and Barbara Gilchrist.
By the time of the 1871 census Barbara has a second Child William (Born in Co Antrim abt 1870) and Daniel Senior is nowhere to be found.
By 1881 Daniel is still McGown at this point, is living with Mum Barbara and Step Dad William Mcleish (Married in 1873), William McGown is not on the Census entry,
On the 23 August 1889 Daniel gets Married to Elizabeth Brown (both of Keppoch Row Possil Park) But Daniel is Listed as McLeish with William as Father and Barbara as Mother.
By 1891 Daniel (McLeish)and Elizabeth are living at 103 Bardowie St Possil Park with Baby William and William and Barbara are still in Keppoch Row Possil park.
Barbara died in 1923 whilst living in Lamb hill and Daniel (McLeish) Died in 1936 his Death Entry lists his Mother as Barbara McLeish maiden Surname Gilchrist but his father is listed as Daniel Mcleish (not Daniel McGown or William McLeish this was some thing that caused me a lot of wrong turns and dead ends.)
Any additional info that confirms my understanding of events or adds to it would be much appreciated and if I have got this wrong please let me know.
Cheers.

Hi Scott,
As you say an old thread :)
I cannot give you anymore information on the McGowan line, other than William McGowan died in 1873. I have extensive notes on the McLeish and Gilchrist lineage which I am happy to send to you. However before I can send you a personal message with my email address, you will have to make two more posts on Rootschat. So just respond to my reply on this thread a couple of times and we can go from there.
I would say that the informant may not have been aware of Daniels biological father's surname and put it down as McLeish.

Hi Eilidh,
Any info would be great as Daniel McGown/McLeish was my 2x great grandfather.

Hi Scott,
No worries, once you post again on this thread, I can send you a pm with my email address. Most of the McLeish line went to USA. I have a direct line with the McLeish/Donaldson's. Lizzie McLeish was my grt grt Aunt.

On the informant on the Death entry I suspect your correct and they didn't know about the McGown connection (my mother certianly had'nt heard of it).
I started down a path of a Daniel McLeish which lead me to a branch of the McLeish family that were Ships carpenters in Dumbarton back to a Daniel McLeish born abt 1811 in Kilearn but unfortunately this branch is not connected to my tree.
However I have now got back on track and looking into McGown info for Co Antrim.
Cheers

Hi Eilidh
Can I butt in on this thread please and ask if you have any info on a Spencer Gilchrist. I have her burial from the OPR's in 1819 in Glasgow City Lanark stating she was 80 so born c1739.
She had a daughter Isabella Stevens born c1784 in Aberdeen, her father was George Steven, a butler according to her marriage cert.
I can find no record of a marriage between George Steven and Spencer Gilchrist, nor any other trace of George.
Working on the dates Spencer would have been quite old when she had Isabella :-\ and I wonder if there were any other children.
Thanks Sylvia
