Hi, am looking for census information on James Heyes, he married Matilda Walsh in 1896 but she died in 1899 so he should be listed as a widower. They married in Ormskirk it was registered in Preston and her death was registered in Wigan. That's all I know.

Hi welcome to Rootschat.
Have you got any idea of when/where James was born as there are lots of James Heyes in Lancashire in the 1901 census?
There is one born Preston living in Wigan in 1901 (RG 12 Piece 3051 Folio 115 page 1) but I doubt if it is him as he is single and a Roman Catholic priest!
The best way might be to get his marriage certificate which would then give you his age (hopefully) , address when he married, occupation and father's name and would give a bit more to go on.

I'm not sure but I think it was the same year as Matilda which would be 1867.
A question, does them being married in a registry office in 96 mean they were catholic?
-
I dont know, but I'm sure there is someone on this site that will. You'll find out that everyone here is very helpful.
I would have thought that if they were Catholic they would be more likely to marry in church though, unless one of them wasn't Catholic.

Hi again. This might be him in 1901
RG 13 Piece 3528 Folio 19 page 30 living at Mackeys Terrace Rainford Lancs
Anne Scarisbrick widow 66
Thomas Scarisbrick son 37
Benjamin Scarisbrick son 31
JAMES HEYES 1867 boarder widower born Rainford coal miner labourer
Sarah HEYES 1890 servant born Rainford
Looks as if Sarah might be his daughter but not with Matilda if this is the right man?

If you are talking about a marriage listed on www.Lancashirebmd.org.uk then no, it just means that they weren`t married in a Church of England church. Any other religion had to have a Registrar present at the marriage. They could have been married at the actual Register Office or at a Baptist, Methodist, Catholic etc. Church/Chapel.

Perhaps if you tell us who exactly "your" Matilda was we may be able to help ;D. You say she was born 1867 - where? Who were her parents and siblings?

Hi
If we're looking for Matilda Walsh now this might be the family in 1871 living in Liverpool. She is the only one I can see.
RG 10 Piece 3761 Folio 134 p2 living at 73 Hopwood Street Liverpool
All the family were born in Antrim Ireland
Robert 31 labourer
Margaret 28
Margaret Ann 6
Sarah 3

Hi my family name is Heyes and I am related to James there are a number of james,s in the family. The family came from rainford and if you go back further you will find that james was the son of John &mary Heyer name having been spelled wrong. James was born in 1831. If it is the correct James let me know and I will be able to tell you more.
