Title: Laurel Bank, Coldstream
Post by: emma86 on Wednesday 24 June 09 19:25 BST (UK)
Hi
On my great grandmothers birth certificate her mothers details state that she was a domestic servant of Laurel Bank, Coldstream, Berwick. I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about the building, where abouts it is/was in Coldstream and who owned it.

Thank you
Emma

Chances are it stood (stands) on High Street, Leet Street, Duke Street or around the Market Place. "Old" Coldstream lies in a narrow strip between the river and north side of the High Street, "across" town it's bounded by Lees Mill and the road that heads of to Lennel and contains many old listed buildings. Most of the buildings are mid 1800's and slightly earlier.

Assuming it's a house name it doesn't appear in the listed building report under Laurel Bank but it is feasible that it could be recorded for example as 23 High Street nowadays.

Best bet for the "who" and "where" is to delve into the census and find the property along with adjoining buildings, this should help locate where it was/is and give the name/occupations of the household.

Thank you for the information

Whats the best site to access the Scottish census' on? Most of the ones I've been using dont go as far as Scotland, which is annoying because this particular branch of the family kept popping over the border!

Hi Emma

You really need Scotlandspeople, althouigh the Scotland census is on Ancestry it doesn't have any images or give address details.

Scotlandspeople is a pay per view site, a search result costs 1 credit and a download of an image costs 5 credits, (equivalent to £1 the last time i used it). Minimum purchase is £5 but you should be able to get a few pages of results for the money.

I live in Coldstream so if you need any photos i might be able to help if you can track down the places.

Listed building details can be found on the following link

Ancestry does give address details  ::) just no images  :'(

You can also use Ancestry to search by address only....so happens there is a Laurel Bank but not in Coldstream it is showing in the parish of Ayton. Not sure sure what period you are looking at Emma but for example this is the only household showing with that address in 1881:

Edward D Doughty 29, Lawyers Clerk, b. Canonbie Dumfriesshire
Mary A Doughty 30, b. Ayton
William S Doughty 4, b. Ayton
Margaret Tait 22, general servant, b. Greenlaw, Berwickshire

Address: Laurel Bank, Ayton, Berwickshire

One more family showing at the same address that year:

William Scott 59, head, fisherman, b. England
Elizabeth H Scott 21, daughter, b. Eccles
Maggie B Scott 11, daughter, b. Eccles

I'm going to muddy the waters a bit here.

I wonder if it might possibly be "Lennel Bank"?

The reason i suggest it is that Lennel is a village close by (perhaps a mile or so) and was the parish that covered the area prior to the building of the church (and creation of the new parish known as Coldstream) in the early 1700's.

From a historical description of around 1880 the following buildings are mentioned and might be food for thought.....

The principal mansions, all noticed separately, are The Hirsel, The Lees, Hope Park, Lennel House
