Hi :)
The 1911 Census is only available on a pay per view basis - ie: have to buy credits. So we can't freely do lookups (& Rootschat policy is no asking for 1911 Lookups :'( )
However, you can search the 1911 index yourself for free.
http://www.1911census.co.uk
Do a full person search (advances to next screen)
Then Advanced Search (opens up full search fields)
I think this link will take you straight to the Full Person Advanced Search:
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx
Search for Surname Exact: GIBSON in Cockermouth, Cumberland.
In "Other members of Household" boxes, put in: Surname Exact: GIBSON and Forenames Exact: Sarah Ann.
Then click Search. This should give you a bit of a lead. and a list of names who maybe in the household.
Because we can't search on an age of the person put in "Other Members field" I would also normally suggest mix and matching searches, using other names produced in the above search, in the "Other Members..." field to try make sure you get a proper houselot which includes the right Sarah Ann GIBSON. However, there is only 1 Sarah Ann GIBSON in Cockermouth, and she is age 4, so no need, I think you will find 9 people in the household.
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
It appears the son you mention, was registered in Stockton, Jun Qtr 1936.
Search McCONNELL surname, Mothers surname GIBSON, Stockton (Durham/Yks NRY) 1936

Right next step have found my great grandfather on 1911 census living at westray farm cockermouth, gives his place of birth as TARNSIGGINN does anyone know were this is?
my grandmothers place of birth was registered as blinderake but i presume this is blindcrake, so maybe a typo on ggfathers place of birth any help appreciated!!

Hi Gail
I wonder, if you have bought a transcription, and not an image? Some interesting transcriptions are coming out of the 1911 Census overall , incl this odd place of birth for John :)
Is this the 1911 Household? If so can you tell me the relationship of John age 65 to the head of house, and his pob?
Surname GIBSON

Betsy 33 - 1878 "Blinderake"

Catherine 9 - 1902
Daniel 7 - 1904,

yes i bought a transcription, if i have enough credits left i will get the original and see if i can make head or tail of it. The older John is a farm worker - a drainer??? asked my dad he thought he might have had something to do with draining the land. Just found out that the youngest child on the 1911 census was mary and she had downs syndrome, and never left the house.
i was in cockermouth 2 years ago and had the opportunity of visting the old farmstead, which has now moved out of the family. was strange seeing were my granny grew up worked and played.

Hi Gail
How lucky you are to have been able to visit ;D When I win Lotto I'll be all over the British Isles looking for old houses and address!
I was more interested in seeing if John GIBSON age 65 was stated as a Father, Uncle, Cousin or Servant, etc? If he was a Servant, I'd have to wonder if his surname was truly GIBSON....It looks to me as if your John's father was probably Daniel.
Do you want me to go back in the Census for John and Betsy to see what we can find?
Cheers

That would be great if you could do that for me ambly
betsy's maiden name was cubby, and was originally from blindcrake (where my grandmother was born)
got the orginal of the census and i think the strange pob looks more like ternriggmoor or something like that so now i have to search the district for a similar name!
were do u live. i live in northern ireland
cheers again

Hi Gail
Possibly the name is a hamlet or farm/estate - will see what comes up in Census for you ;D
Me, I'm all the way down in (very cold) Auckland, New Zealand but ancestry wise - Falkland Islands and then back to England, Ireland, Scotland Wales and Denmark. All been fairly straightforward to research, overall - except, unfortunately Ireland, never much got past the ferry at Stranraer, figuratively speaking! :'( :D

i know what you mean - England seems to be so much easier to get information on. If you have any ancestors in northern ireland you need looking up ie bmd's i am going to the GRO in August and i can look them up for you if you want.
since joining here 3 days ago i have discovered i have more english parts to me than irish, mainly from morpeth, ashington, cockermouth. The least info i have is on belfast connection so that is why i am going to GRO to research them
Cheers Gail

What a kind offer :D. But I wouldn't dare burden you - such as I have DORAN and GIBBONS, SULLIVAN and McCLINK - you can see my dilemma, especially with the first two. Would take me a month of Sundays just to hash over them and find a place to start ::) McCLINK is the mystery one. She was illiterate and the name is most certainley a "phonetic" rendering. Actually I think I did manage to find a tenuous connection to Ireland>Cumberland for her. I might PM you something later on her just on the offchance you have a mo to look for something.... But, I'm sure you will have your hands full (hopefully) with your own!
Back to the GIBSONS:
Unless stated otherwise, Cumberland is the stated County of birth for all p.o.b's in these transcripts:
MARRIAGE: Mar Qtr 1871 - Wigton
Daniel GIBSON & Catherine WRIGHT on same page
1871: "Oulton" - Township & Parish of Oulton, Wigton, Cumberland
RG10 / Piece: 5227 / Folio: 120 / Page: 9
Head: John GIBSON 71, Landowner & Farmer, b Scaleby
Wife: Ann 71, b Abbey Holme
Son: Daniel 28, married, farmer of 231 acres, b Wigton
Grandaughter: Betsy ISMAY? 16, unm, Servant, b Wigton
Daniel's new wife Catherine is with her parents - and possibly awaiting the birth of her first child, (your John). It's clear he was most likely born at the home of his maternal grandparents:
1871: "Tarrigg Moor" - Oulton
RG10 / Piece: 5227 / Folio: 122 / Page: 14
Head: John WRIGHT 65, Farmer of 165 acres, b Kirkandrew
Wife: Eleanor 66, b Kirkandrew
Son: George 21, unm, Farmers Son, b Kirkandrew
Dau: Eleanor 27, unm, Farmers Dau, b Kirkandrew
Dau: Catherine GIBSON 24, married, farmers Wife, b Kirkandrew
Grandau: Jane WRIGHT 17, unm, b Kirkandrew
Above the pob for John, is written I think "on Estate", so I think his pob (and the other's by ditto) is meant to read: born on estate Kirkandrew
1881: "Edderside" - Holme St Cuthbert, Cumberland
RG11 / Piece: 5167 / Folio: 88 / Page: 18
Head: Daniel GIBSON 38, Farmer of 150 Acres, b Oulton
Wife: Cathrine 34, " wife, b Kirklinton
Son: John 9, Scholar b, Farnrigg Moor
Dau: Mary Ellen 7, b Oulton
Dau: Ann 6, b Oulton
Son: William 4, b Mealrigg
Dau: Margaret Wright 3, b Mealrigg
Dau: Jane 1, b Mealrigg
1891: "Edderside" - Holme St Cuthberts, Cumberland
RG12 / Piece: 4298 / Folio 53 / Page 9
Head: Daniel GIBSON 48, Farmer, b Holme St Cuthbert
Wife: Catherine 44, b Kirklinton
Son: John 19, Farmers Son, b Holme St Cuthbert
Dau: Mary 17, Farmers Dau, b Holme St Cuthbert
Dau: Annie 16, Farmers Dau, b Holme St Cuthbert
Son: William 14, Scholar, b Bromfield
Dau: Margaret 13, Scholar, b Bromfield
Dau: Jane 11, Scholar, b Bromfield
Dau: Sarah 9, Scholar, b Holme Cultram
Dau: Catherine 7, Scholar, b Holme Cultram
Son: Thomas 4, Scholar, b Holme Cultram
Dau: Georgina 1, b Holme Cultram
Servant: John BARKER 60, single, farm Servant, b Bromfield
Servant: Joseph GRAHAM 19, single, farm Servant, b K...? Hill
(County of birth for all is Cumberland)
So, Tarn Rigg Moor Oulton it is , the birthplace for John ;D
Have a google of that, heaps of references!
Gosh, it's even possible there are still WRIGHT's there, if you google Tarn Rigg Moor wright - here's one:

Re Farnsiggin: I looked at this last night and, seeing as 1901 said Wigton, I looked at a map of the Wigton area and noticed to the north Tarnrigg Moor Map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=325170&Y=550542&A=Y&Z=120
I see now that AMBLY has found in censuses all those Tarnrigg Moors :)
-
Thanks Geoff, i do believe Tarn Rigg Moor was the place of birth of my great grandfather john gibson - his mother was a wright, and there are still wrights living on the farm, so i wonder if it is the same family! Ambly has been so kind and thoughtful and found all the details of the aforesaid families. And has even tracked my great uncle Daniel to Austrailia!!
Thanks guys!
Gail ;D ;D ;D

If this helps for the future (or past) researching. I just finished looking for Grahams' in Cockermouth and came across a marriage.
I know it is not 1911 but maybe it will be helpful.
Joseph Graham (shoemaker) married Ann Gibson
