Title: WW1 Record
Post by: glitter2009 on Tuesday 23 June 09 09:11 BST (UK)
Hello

I am looking into if a relative was possibly in the WW1.

His name was Alfred Leopold Stafford, DOB 1882, born Toxteth Park.
He was living in Clerkenwell, London in the 1901 census, and I cannot find him in the 1911 census.

The only possiable one I have found is on Ancestry, Reg Number 5099.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ti=5538&indiv=try&db=britisharmy&h=759679

I cannot be sure that it is him, and I do not know if he was in the Army.  ???

What do you guys think ?? Would it have given his middle name on the form ?

Thanks  :) :)

Hi,
Have you checked all the pages of the record , I see he gave a friend as Next of Kin- Sarah E Egerton, 17 Clark Street, Off Rochdale Road Oldham. Also reason for discharge after 44 days service was poor eye sight. Also his age on papers is 34 making Dob 1880 not 1882.
As he had 10 yrs previous service with 5th Battalion Lancashire Fusileers.before he was called up for War Service in the Manchester Regt.he must have had good eyesight then. If you get hold of his orriginal attestation papers for his regular service engagement they will probably have his orriginal address and father or Mother as Next of Kin.
                                            Regards Rog

Hi Glitter ;D ;D

This Alfred says he was born in Oldham (not Toxteth Park)

I checked if he went on to marry Sarah and he did - in 1917.  Did your Alfred marry a Sarah?

Jun 1917     Oldham    8d   1036
Egerton    Sarah E    Stafford
Stafford    Alfred    Egerton

A check for Alfred Stafford born in Oldham shows a much more likely candidate than Alfred Leopold. Shame.

Jun 1879 Oldham    8d   674
BIRTH Stafford    Alfred

The 5th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers was a Territorial Force battalion (and before 1908 a Volunteer Battalion) ie part time soldiers. Their HQ was in Bury.

Ancestry have not published surviving WW1 service records for the Ss yet. The 'only possible one' is a pensions record. If he survived unscathed (or died) he would not be in this series.
