Title: Stevens, Orari South Canterbury late 1800s
Post by: K1W1GR3G on Tuesday 23 June 09 07:27 BST (UK)
Seeking information on a William Stevens and Mary Holland. Arrived into Lyttleton 1874 on "Ballockmyle" with children Emily, Mary and William.
Known to be resident at Grange Farm, Orari in 1880s based on marriage of Emily and birth of Grandson Francis.
From arrival notes came from Oxfordshire.
A little confusing as there seems to be a William Stevens and Mary Brown in the Timaru region at about the same time and buried in Timaru. Do not seem to be the same William and Mary.

Appreciate any advice.    :) :)

Hi

I see you haven't given the approx. years of birth for  William and Mary STEVENS ?

They are recorded on the "Ballochmyle" (1874) passenger list as being ...  William - aged 33 (born circa 1841) and Mary - aged 40 (bc 1834).

Yes, I can see the confusion with the William and Mary buried (in same plot) at Timaru Cemetery  ... the William there seems a good age match for the person you are seeking  ???     However, there is no age at death, recorded for "the Mary STEVENS".      [A check of the Death index shows just one 1918 death for a "Mary Ann STEVENS - aged 62 years" ... so year of birth would be c. 1856.]

*    Do you have the occupation of William STEVENS ?

*    Perhaps check the 1881 electoral roll (all of NZ)
and 1893 as well,  to see if he is still at Orari.

*    Also try the online Death index for age matches for them both.

   ----

Do you know burial places of daughter Emily and her siblings ?

[Sometimes parents can be found in cemeteries in nearby towns ? ]

Thanks for the advice.

Emily (Pierce nee Stevens) was buried in Temuka in 1946. Have not been able to find a matching William and Mary there.
Francis,  is actually Emily's son as discovered from the vanilla birth record, but was brought up as part of William and Mary's family and William and Mary are listed as parents on his marriage cert. (I so had to sweet talk the clerk in BDM to get hold of this a few years ago, she was initially quite evasive about it). He moved to New Plymouth but not sure exactly when, married in NP in 1914.  No haven't located them in Taranaki either.
The indication from the shipping list was that they were from Oxfordshire. Have not been able to find a likely match in 1871 census. Both William and Mary Stevens are incredibly common names in the UK in mid 1800s! Have looked for them with known children which are Emily, Mary and William Robert. Have not been able to find a Stevens - Holland marriage in an appropriate time span on Free BDM.
Emily's death cert states she was born in Staffordshire, Francis's birth cert which is probably more reliable states Oxfordshire. The one I thought might be a match in Kings Norton isn't.
The Grange Farm comes from the Timaru Herald marriage notice for Emily. I would therefore assume that Sheep Farmer is the appropriate occupation.

Have found a possible match for Mary Stevens d 1897 age 56 so will get the cert and see if I get lucky. This would make birth date only 1841 ( a bit younger than expected) - there are various reasons why the ages on the shipping records may be inaccurate although usually in the other direction. Thanks Lucy2 for the suggestion.

If Francis was born 1884
they were in area of ORTON school, and Williams address was given as Rangitata
from 1894 to 1901 when he left school
