Hi,
Does anyone have any idea what the initials M.N. might mean if placed at the end of someone's name on a Headstone?
His name reads as: "JOHN POOK M.N." on the headstone.
I believe he died by drowning, possibly a seaman? if that helps?
It even shows up on the Burial Locator CD in brackets:
Source NZSG Cemetery Fiche
Surname POOK
Given Names John (Mn)
Year of Death 1944
Record Number 23
Record Type M/I
Age 28
Location Whakapirau St Albans Anglican Cemetery A08.12
Cheers,
Jazz

Could it be Merchant Navy?

Thanks Charlotte.
I'd never heard of them but sounds right after googling that esp given date of death.
What a fast solution!

In 1944 when he died the Merchant Navy was big stuff... carting supplies around the world and always being torpedoed.
I know a man whose eyesight made him unable to enlist in the armed services so he mugged up on radio transmissions and joind the Merchant Navy. he was in the Malta convey and tthe ship he was on was sunk, another ship rescued hima dn others, then that sma enight it was sunk by the enemy... they were brave men doing an important job.

My first ever post on Roots Chat. Hopefully I'm not inadvertantly breaking any rules.
I'm also hunting down the Pook's. Ted Pook was my great grandfather. Your John Pook was from his second family. I have an old family tree, not complete and over 30 years old.
I have gone back as far as John Pook and Rebecca Spicer in Dorset in 1786 but am really stuck on them.....and a fair few blanks in between

the original poster hasn't been online for a couple of months, but will get a notification of a reply to this thread, so hopefully will be in touch soon.
Hope you make some more posts on any brickwalls you have on your tree or just to hunt for aother researchers.
Do you see how the board works, thre are different forums for different countries/counties...but sing out and someone is always available to help
Bye

Hi,
Always nice to find another relative. I get from reading your post that you are from Ted's 1st family? Ted is my great grandfather too.
I have not come across the John and Rebecca you speak of. We have managed to go back as far as William Pook and Maria Hyde.
I will be in touch by PM.
