Title: Good Old Sussex by the Sea
Post by: Ssxy on Sunday 21 June 09 21:35 BST (UK)
More roots than tree ;)

I am trying to find a vocal recording of "Good Old Sussex by the Sea" to surprise a cousin at a family reunion. Happy to send a blank CD and p&p to anyone able to copy such a track for me. Grateful for any help. (PM details etc.)

Kind regards, Ssxy.

Hi Ssxy

Have you tried googling Sussex by the sea.  You may well find a downloadable recording on the web somewhere as there are various websites that do old songs, many for free.

Hi Kerry,

I have tried googling the title, but I only came up with non-vocal renditions, usually played by large bands. YouTube has several short videos of  "elated" Sussex fans singing at various football and cricket matches, which wasn't quite what I had in mind!

Regards, Ssxy

Just a thought but both the BBC and the British Library hold archives of sound recordings, might be worth a phone call or e.mail to either or both..... :-\

Hi, was sure that someone on the Sussex Family History Group had the song on their website but have just looked and couldn't find it.
What about asking for help on another fantastic site; My Brighton & Hove.
Sure someone can help.  Good Luck.

Hi

Did you ever find a vocal recording of 'Sussex by the Sea' ? I am looking for the same thing but have not managed to find one yet?

Don't think the late Bob Copper or his family ever recorded it, 'Sussex by the Sea' in local dialect would have been great.  But have a look at their recordings just in case.
My memory only recalls the 'ribald' version sung in Barrack rooms and at rugby matches.  Somehow, I dont think that's what you want either!

Might be worth asking your local Brownie groups and schools as that's where I learnt it in the 1980s!

Can't get the bl***y song out of my head now!

The Royal Marines Band Service have released a recording of it (although it's instrumental) and it is on Amazon.
