Title: Curlett family, Kilbirnie ayrshire?
Post by: daza_1973 on Friday 19 June 09 20:42 BST (UK)
My great grandfather luther seth berry married elizabeth curlett in 1922.
On the 1911 censes she (aged 10) is living in southport with the family of Robert Barton. Her birthplace is listed as Kilbirnie scotland.
But interestingly her relationship to the head of the house is neice, and the daughter of robert barton (elizabeth alice) is married to a curlett (james I recently found out). Does anyone have any record of Curletts in kilbirnie around the 1900's ?
And can anyone workout how she can be roberts neice when his daughter is a Curlett as well (its got me very confused)  ???

Hello Dazza,

There are 15 births in Kilbirnie, for the surname Curlet, none with the double t at the end.

One of these is for a Elizabeth Curlet, born 1900. which just about fits a person being the age you say on the 1911 census.

You can purchase this certificate for a small sum at Scotlandspeople, and this would provide the parents names of this Elizabeth.

Regards,
Jonn.

Cheers Jon, went on the site and searched for curlet (one t) and found elizabeth, paid to view it and low and behold it turns out Elizabeth curlet (nee Barton) and James Curlett were actually her parents.
So the niece thing was a mistake.
 Result!!!

Hello Dazza,

I may have some more info on your Curlet's, and the Barton's, if you can supply the ages of Robert Barton, and Elizabeth, from the 1911. census, also if you have a age for James Curlet, also does it say on the census if Robert Barton, was born in Scotland.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi Jonn

Robert barton was 66 in 1911, Elizabeth Barton (wife) was 65, Elizabeth curlet (nee barton) was 32, James Curlet would have been 37 in 1911.
As for Roberts birthplace on the 3 census's I found him on 1911, 1901 and 1891 it was listed as Southport, Lancashire.
Although any extra information whatsoever about them would be greatly appreciated.

  Many thanks Darren

Hello Darren,

I thought that perhaps because Elizabeth Curlet, was born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, 1900. that maybe her parents were born in Scotland, i can see now that the Barton's, were born in England.

Do you know if James Curlet, was born in Scotland, because there is one born in Kilbirnie, about 1874. this would match the age you gave of 37.

Also was Robert Barton's, wife Elizabeth, second name Ball.

Regards,
Jonn.

Last night when I looked up Elizabeth Curlet on 'scotlands people' site I had some credits left over so I went back and found James's parents were Alexander Curlet and Janet Curlet (nee Wilson) they lived in Kibirnie in 1871 so I assume James was born there.

As for the Bartons I've just searched the marriage records and Elizabeth's maiden name was indeed Ball - and they were married in the last quarter of  1870.
   Thanks for the tip-off  :)

Regards,
Darren.

Hello Darren,

Yes thats who i thought were his parents.

They were married Alex Curlet, Janet Wilson. 29/Sep/1873. Kilbirnie, Ayr.

James Curlet, was born 29/Sep/1873. Kilbirnie, Ayr, so it was a rush job.

1881. census. Kilbirnie, Ayr. Address, Newton Street.

Alex Curlet, Head, Thread Winding Tenter, M. age 47 years, M. born Saltcoats, Ayr,
Janet Curlet, Wife, M. age 29 years, F. born Kilbirnie, Ayr,
James Curlet, Son, Scholar, M. age 7 years, born Kilbirnie, Ayr,
John Curlet, Son, Scholar, M. age 5 years, born Kilbirnie, Ayr,
Jane S. Curlet, Daur, age 3 years, F. born Kilbirnie, Ayr,
Mary Curlett, Daur, age 5 m, F. born Kilbirnie, Ayr.
Alexander Shearer, Boarder, Cabinet Maker, U. 18 years, M. born Saltcoats, Ayr

I think the age of Alex Curlet, is wrong on this census. and i dont mean by a few years i think he should be about the same age as his wife, ie 29 years. its most likely a transcription error.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hello Darren,

I meant to add on the previous post that the Alexander Shearer, aged 18 years, i think may be a relation of Alex Curlet, because i also think Alex's, mothers maiden name was Shearer.

Jonn.

Hi Jonn
Thanks again for this extra info, I'm very tempted to have another go on the scotpeople site as the fact you can view the actual certificate is a great help and saves waiting a week to get a certificate that can often be the wrong one.

Regards,
Darren

Hello Darren,

On Scotlandspeople, you can waste money on searching, for example what you put in the search engine has to be exactly the same as whats on their certificate otherwise you will not get a hit.

With the name Curlet, most of them are in Ayr.

Their are seven marriages from 1855. till 2006.
So if you just put the surname Curlet, no first name and Ayr, then you will get 7 hits. for your one credit. they are most likely all related, this is only the index, but they will be there in your previous searches if in the future you wish to view them.

The same goes with births, there are 48 Curlet, births the whole of Scotland, 1855. till 2006, this would cost two credits.

42 of the above births are again in Ayrshire.

Regards,
Jonn.

I've only just found this link. My ancestor was Peter Ball born around 1799 Southport Lancashire. He married Alice Jackson in 1829 and one of their children was Elizabeth Ball. Elizabeth married Robert Barton as stated on this link. The exciting part of this is that Peter Ball was the Bellman or town crier for southport between about 1830 to 1858 (his death) and an historical novel was written about him called "Peter the Bellman" by Alan Joyce. The book is out of print now but can occasionally be found on the internet. I've tried researching Peter's parents but I'm having trouble getting any information at present. If anyone knows anything about him please could you reply to this message. Thanks

there is a memorial to a man called curlet in Kilbirnie cemetery, its a war grave memorial,  and he appears to have died with honours.  I cant remember the first name but it might be william. He also mentioned on kilbirnie war memorial
