Hi,
Has anyone heard of a place in Lancashire called Welton?
???
I am looking at the 1881 census and this is how it has been transcribed. I thought it could be Bolton but it doesn't look like it. I would be very happy if it was Chorlton in Manchester but it doesn't look like it either.
1881 Census
John Grant born abt 1853 in "Welton", Lancashire
RG11/2965 Folio 4 p 4
Thanks,
Luzzu

Walton?

Sorry, I don't know where Walton is either ???. The more I look at it though the more it is looking like Nelson or even Preston.
-
Could it be Welton in Lincs..... try Google.
Walton is an area of Liverpool.
Walton-le- Dale is near Preston.

I've just had a look at original and couldnt be sure what it says.

I Have just looked in the free 1881 census and there are only 6 John Grant born around those years, 3 born in Liverpool and 3 in Manchester.

There is a Weeton between Kirkham and Blackpool

It could be Nelson, that would match a 1852 birth on Lancashire BMD for John Haworth Grant, Burnley BU/29/16
Modified
It isn't the Burnley one as they are both on the 1881 cwnsus

Hi everyone and thanks,
:)
Just ruled out John Haworth Grant born 1852 Burnley. I have accounted for him from 1861 to 1891 - he went to London where he married Emma and worked as a school master.
The John Grant I am trying to trace was born in 1852 in Manchester but I can't find his birth - both the Manchester births are wrong and am working through the Liverpool ones but its like lucky dip and I'm not winning. :'(
I have found him on the 1861 census with his father, Patrick, mother (more likely stepmother), Catherine and brother, Michael. On the 1871 he is with Catherine (widow), Michael and younger brother Thomas. On the 1881 census everyone is missing except Michael who I have found with his "wife" and children lodging with the Maitland family. Michael didn't marry until 1883 though. John reappears on the 1891 census living in Salford with his wife Mary who he married in 1883.
Fast becoming an expert on every John Grant except "mine". Last week I thought I had found him in Whittington Barracks, Lichfield but he was the wrong one too.
