Title: Hurst family Garston
Post by: OlgaD on Thursday 18 June 09 19:55 BST (UK)
Good Evening
I was wandering if anybody has any information about my GGG Grandfather , he was born in Garston in 1841, in 1861 he was boarding in Duke Street. He married Christiana Matilda Coe in 1862 and had eight children. I belong to the youngest one. His Father I was told was an engine fitter called William. Edward was a stone mason and at the time of marriage to Christiana they both lived in a Knight ?
Any help would be appreciated

Olga

Hi Allen

I know that Edward and Walter where carters, they moved from Garston to Wavertree. Do you think it is the same family? Do you know wheather that was the workhouse in Brownlow Hill. Was'nt expecting Geordie land?

Alan
sorry about spelling your name wrongly, Charlotte is 10 years younger than William but the next age is William 13 and Robert 11 a bit confusing

Hi.

Alan is offline so I will fill in a bit.

It looks likely that Edward Snr must have remarried as there is a gap between Edward aged 8 and John aged 2 in the 1851 census. Charlotte aged 22 was listed as Edwards Wife.  There is a possible marriage on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk for an Edward Hurst and Charlotte Hatton in 1847 at St. Philips`, Liverpool.   On the 1851 Edward was listed as an Engine Smith and Charlotte as a Milliner and Shopkeeper.

The address 200 Brownlow Hill was not the workhouse.

In the 1901 census Edward Snr, Walter and Edward were all born Garston and Christina was born Hull.

Regards,
Mo

Hello Again

Do you think if I applied for the birth certificate of edward jnr 1841 the records office would have it? And then that would confirm that Edward sen is his Dad

Hi Olga,
Birth Cert is always confirmation as to parentage.   The only Edward Hurst I could find that would "fit in"........would be in Dec Qtr 1839, West Derby, Vol 20, Page 853.   You can order on line at "gro.gov.uk" and you will have to part with £7

Hi,

I am struggling knowing what to say with this one as I can`t find an exact birth registration for him.   Garston came under the West Derby registration district and the only one was the Edward Hurst registered in Dec. Qtr.1839 Volume 20 page 853.  But, if this one was yours he should appear in the 1841 census - I can`t find him.   It didn`t actually become a finable offence not to register a birth until the mid 1870`s.   ::)

Do you have Edward`s marriage certificate and if so what are the exact details?  You originally seemed to think that his father was William.  Who were the witnesses?

There is just something bothering me.

Regards,
Mo
P.S. just tried to post and see you have come up with the same Alan  ;D

Good Evening All

I have the marriage lines for Edward and Christiana they where married at the Parish Church, which i assume is under the bridge in Grarston 29th June 1862, they both reside at Knight ? maybe hs or st William Hurst father engine fitter, Joshua Coe mariner. The ages are not written down Christiana looks like it says minor and Edward looks like it says full,Edward signed his own name and so did the witness Thomas Rensore, Christiana signed x and the other witness Sarah Barber did also.
A bit lost as generally their children are named after sibling, some of their daughters are named after Coe girls. Also their eldest son was called Edward Tyler Hurst and my grandfather was registered Richard Edward Hurst, and on his death certificate Richard Edward Hurst but when his spinster sister died and the inheritance was divided between her siblings he was named Edward Hurst. I know I am rambling on but just a little insight I suppose!

Hiya again Olga...I`m enjoying this cos it`s about Garston...
ok....go to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk   then go to marriages ..then type in Hurst Edward and Coe. Christiana...then 1862...
then you will see that Edward and Christiana were NOT married in Garston...they were married in Liverpool City Centre in St Peters.....all the details are there for you...
on www.freebmd.org.uk  you click on search /births and type Coe Christiana.....b 1841 sep qtr Sulcoates (hull)..
so 1851 census for Coe in Sulcoates
LISTER PLACE,SULCOATES,HULL
Joshua Gibbs Coe 32
Elizabeth Coe 34
Sarah Elizabeth Coe 12
Christiana Matilda Coe 9
Emma Coe 7
Mary A Coe 4
Emily Coe 1

in all probability Joshua Coe`s mother was a Gibbs-hence the Joshua Gibbs Coe...if you go to www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk you might just get the marriage of Joshua and Elizabeth about 1837-39...good luck...allan ;)

added...you`re very lucky..just made it in 1837

Joshua Coe to Elizabeth Dodds at All Saints church ,Sulcoates,Hull Ref No HAS/1/137   They must have been married JUST as the records began /1/ meaning the first qtr jan/feb/march....you`re sooo lucky to get that marriage...it looks like the 137 th marriage recorded in Hull...a very early one...something to brag about....lol...allan ;D
and added again..
1861 in Garston...Christiana is in a caravan on Speke Road in Garston with her mum Elizabeth...Joshua is not there....allan

Hi again
Where do I start, Christiana's lot I have got back to Wells next the Sea, knew Joshua married an Elizabeth Dodds, I have their marriage certificate. The Hurst lot, I do have Edward sen in 1861 boarding in Duke st , 1881 Shakespeare St, 1891 12 King St but in 1901  at 7 king St lived another part of the family  who had a shop, their name was Beresford who moved not far from the Hurst's in Wavertree, This is the lady who married Richard Edward Hurst and had five daughters born in Garston,Richard  Edwards address when he died was 2 Thomas street. Richard Edwards Siblings where Joseph born March 1863 Garston, Edward Tyler born 1865 Garston, Albert born 8th Feb 1869, Emma Matilda born Sept 1871, Christiana Matilda born June 1877, Walter born 1880,Elizabeth Mary Ann born 1881 and my Richard Edward born in 1885. Richard and his wife moved back to Garston and had five daughters, Alice Gertrude 1907, Doris,1909, Ethel 1913 Violet1914 and Hilda 1917.Violets daughter lives I think in Lincoln St this present time.!  When Elizabeth Mary Ann Hurst died couldn't tell you what year but Walter's son George lived in 9 Thomas Street the other siblings children roamed to Speke Aigburth Allerton Bury etc, it's hard sometimes I think Richard Edward could of belonged to Edward Tyler or was Edward sen born out of wedlock? Its sad really as all the girls names represent the Coe girls, but the boys beside Edward seem quiet random, by the way Joshua Gibbs Coe was born Joshua Coe Gibbs his mum was 16 the Joshua Coe in the town was 17 so on his marriage lines there was no Dad
