Hi
Trying to trace my cousins, Stanley Vance who worked for the Hudson Bay company, born circa 1938 in Victoria B.C. and also his sister Marlyn who was 2 years older. There father Tom Vance and his wife Bessie emigrated from Scotland in the early 1930s and settled in Victoria. Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi Tom,
I beleive the HBC head office and their Archive is in Winnipeg, Manitoba. You should be able to google the HBC and find their site and contact info for what you are looking for depending on which info you want. I am not to sure if the HBC company was solely a retail business or more than that back in 1938. At some point they renamed themselves the Northern Stores. I beleive Eatons owned them at some point. The Northern Stores is still operation in northern Ontario and Manitoba communities - not sure about other provinces. Hope this helps.

Many thanks JDC, I'll give that a go

The HBC Archives was donated to Manitoba Archives but it won't include recent records of an employee who was born about 1938.
JDC, I think you're confusing some of the retailers. HBC owns The Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and Fields. HBC's corporate head office has been located in Toronto for many years and the company was never owned by the Eaton family. The Northern Stores division is no longer operated by HBC but by The North West Company (as of 1987) which has its head office in Winnipeg. After Eaton's went bankrupt it was purchased by Sears Canada however they closed the Eaton's stores a few years later.
