Hi There.
I am doing a family tree for a friend. Family story has it, that someone did very well for themselves in Canberra.........
There has only ever been one family, called Latty, in Leeds, Yorkshire, and I have followed all members from 1841 to their demise, and none of them left the country at all, indeed of the 7 members resident in Leeds at that time, only one went on to have a family of their own.....
The mother, father and eldest son were born in Scotland, no place name given for the parents, but the son John, gives his place of birth as Glasgow 1821......
I know that the name Latta / Latty are more or less the same, and have found the following family, sailing on the "Peerless" 23rd September 1863........
Robert LATTA born c1816
Janet LATTA born c1817
William Latta born c 1844
David Latta born c1846
Jane Latta born c1852
The place of origin is given as Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
Can anyone help me discover what happened to them on arrival ? Can anyone find the Latty name, at anytime in Canberra. Especially a immigrant "making Good"
I would be most grateful, for any help
Thank You

There are quite a lot of LATTY in NSW
you can search online for the NSW BDMs
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
you will see what would appear to be this family.

Robert LATTA
married Jean or Janet LINDSAY on 21 Aug 1829 in Kilmarnock.
According to Census, Robert was born approx 1811.
Her parents are probably named John LINDSAY and Agnes.
I have these notes:
C41: Kilmarnock Lowglencairn Street:
Robert age 30, Cal Printer, wife Janet age 30, HandSewer, and 3 children,: Agnes, John, Robt. Another dau, Mary age 10 is probably on same Census , same street with maternal grandparents.
Robert is probably related to (brother?) of John LATTA (married Margaret GIBSON). - John age 83 is living at 47 Titchfeild Street in C81. A son of of Robert & Jeane, also named Robert . ) is living at nr 88 Titchfield with his own family and a nephew, son of his sister Mary LATTA (who married James GIBSON).
John LATTA, is also in same C41 street at Robert & Jean.
RES12 (my ID for a researcher on this family) says Robert & Janet went to Australia in 1863 with 4 children.
In total there are 7 children known.
Jean supposed to be buried:
?Burial 9 Oct 1896 Meth UM, Sandridge Cemetery, Milton Ulladulla NSW
I'm not related - but over many years have conducted my own 'one-name' research on LATTA and LATTO of Scotland.

These are the children I have for Robert LATTA and Jean LINDSAY (jean & Janet interchangable in Scottish names)
ID836: Agnes LATTA abt 1829 Kilmarnock AYR (per Census, no IGI birth/chr record found)
ID835: Mary LATTA b abt 1832 Kilmarnock AYR (per Census, no IGI birth/chr record found)
ID831: John LATTA b 1 Dec 1834 Kilmarnock AYR
ID833: Robert LATTA b 10 May 1841 Kilmarnock AYR
ID834: William LATTA b 5 Nov 1843 Kilmarnock AYR
ID830: David LATTA b 23 Feb 1846 Kilmarnock AYR
ID831: Jean LATTA b 23 Jun 1851 Kilmarnock AYR
I believe of the above, Mary, Robert and John all stayed in Ayrshire at least initially. My Gray spot is son, John - evidence Scotland side points to him maybe having married there 1863 and as a widower in 1881 - yet the NSW BDM shows a probable death in 1911....
NSW side, from the BMD it looks as if:
Father Robert, died in 1868 in Uladulla, stated father name as John.
Son David, died 1901 in Milton NSW, parents Robert and Jeanette
Son John, died 1911 in Milton NSW, parents Robert & Janet
Have you any more details of your friend's LATTY in Canberra to try see if they can match up?
Cheers

I am leaving this post as is as - some of the info has been duplicated....
The family you list appear to have settled Milton, a short distance from Ulladulla on the south coast of New South Wales.
I have detailed the following as none of them appear to have lived in the area known in that period as Canberry - rural area with some small settlements quite a distance inland to the west of Ulladulla. The federal capital of Australia, Canberra located in the Australian Capital Territory, formerly part of the state of New South Wales, was built as the result of the federation of states in 1900. Officially opened in 1913.

I would just point out that Canberra itself was not found until 1913c and the ACT as we know it now was formed in 1911. So if they lived around the area I would think they would be showing on the NSW bdm's. However if that is not the case I am sure someone might have further information.
I have checked the Canberra Cemeteries on line and there are no Latta/Latty showing

Oh Cando, you and I thought the same thing about explaining Canberra!!!! ;D

Fortunately the family on the Peerless 1863 appears to have settled, resided and died in and around Milton/Ulladulla and south coast of NSW with the exception of dau Jane/Jean who died in Newton.
There are a number of births on the indexes to Jane/Jean/Jean L and Charles.

Looks like another red herring with the Lattys Jeannie - Robert LATTY, wife Martha and family along with his brother James wife Elizabeth and family arrived in 1857 aboard the Golconda. They were from South Petherton Somerset.......Kris :)

If you search the phone book using ACT and New South Wales there are people with the surname listed. Postcodes that begin 25.. are on the South Coast - including Milton.
There are also mentions of 'Latta' in the digitised newspaper site from the National Library. Too many to look at just now, but one caught my eye from The Sydney Gazette, about a "John Latta" from Kilmarnock who died of fever at the quarantine station in Sydney 5 (later paper says 2) March, 1838, unmarried, had arrived 8 weeks before on the MINERVA from Greenock.
There are a number of deaths for LATTA in the South Coast area if you search the Ryerson Index, some dating back to the 1950s.

Hi ,
There are many sad stories and references to the Fever ship Minerva arriving in Australia 1838.
Very tragic and large loss of life.
Here is one mention.

WOW.........
What can I say ? I wasn't even sure if I would get one response......
My Latty Family (transcribed Latta in 1841 ) consisted of......
John Latta / age 50 / labourer / born Scotland
Jean Latta / age 50 / born Scotland
John Latta / age 15 / born Scotland
William Latta / age 15 / born Hull
James Latta / age 15 / born Hull
Jean Latta / age 12 / born Hull
David Lattie / age 10 / born Hull
This was and still is the only family of that name in Leeds and Harrogate. John jnr, in later censu states he was born in Glasgow, but I have been unable to find this on Scotland People. Of the others, only David went on to have a family......
I had thought that Robert Latta, may have been my John Latta snr brother, but if Ambly has found him alive and well in 1881, this cannot be so. My Leeds John Latta died in 1847
I have to admit, that it was only the family christian names, that drew me to this particular family. They are so similar., that I thought there mustbe some connection. I have just about finished the Latty tree, and thought it would be nice, if I could confirm the family story of the Latty Emigrants.
I am so grateful to you all, for your help. The sites you have named will be very useful to me too, as I know that some of my own family settled in Oz, but haven't got to them. Yet.
Thank You all again

Hi JeanieR
Am trying to find any small clue....
Are you already aware that the son James did appear to marry in 1844 to Harriet KITCHING, probably had a son born 1846 - and certainley a daughter in late 1848/early 1849 - then James died, and his probable son died both in late 1849?
James' widow (I believe) Harriet and daughter Mary are on the 1851 Census on the same Street as James' mother and 2 siblings. Will post up full details if you require them :)
The 1841 Census instructions meant ages of people over 15 were meant to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 (and this LATTY family certainley has been rounded down). ie: Someone age 19, 18, 17, 16 should be rounded to 15. Someone age 59, 58, 57, 56, should be rounded down to 55
So, John & Jean showing as age 55 in 1841 (not 50) approximates born abt 1786 - BUT could both be as old as 59, born abt 1782. This is certainley true for Jean/Jane....
1851: 9 Woodman Street - South Leeds
HO107; Piece: 2319; Folio: 681; Page: 29;
Head: Jane LATTY 70, widow, Housekeeper, b Scotland (abt 1781)
Son: John LATTY 28, single, Coal Miner, b Scotland (abt 1823)
Dau: Jane LATTY 20, single, Rover Flax Mill, b Hull
Son: David LATTY 19 , Coal Miner, b Hull
1861: 9 Woodman Street - South Leeds
Head: Jane LATTY 79, widow, b Scotland
Son: John LATTY 39
Dau: Jane LATTY 29
In 1841 she would really be abt 58 or 59
In 1831/1832/1833 she would be abt 48 or 49 (when David was born) (David's age in later Census and death - all point to a year of birth abt 1832.
This makes Jane/Jean in her very late 40's, nearly 50 when she had both dau Jane and David?
How hold was John snr recorded as, when he died ?

Ambly,
Thank You for your continued interest.
I have all the census details, and found the marriage of James and Harriet. The birth and death of their son, and the birth of their daughter. I can find nothing else on Harriet, I have searched for a death, or a remarriage . Mary also disappears after the 1871 census, where she is a servant in Lancashire.
John Latty snr, was buried in 1847, his age was given as 75, so I see where your thoughts may be going.....could David , be a grandchild ?
James, buried in 1849 was 23, his son died the same year and was 3 years old.
Jane snr and Jane jnr both died in 1862. No age given on the burial records. I have to to admit to the cardinal sin, of not obtaining the death certificates. I am doing this as a gift, and trying to keep the cost down !
John jnr, married Helena Goodall in 1868. They had no children, and John died in 1884.
David Latty, had five children. Three girls and two boys. Two girls died unmarried, and only one son had children.....
I think I will send for the marriage certificate of David Latty and Sarah Ann Fogden. If John was indeed his grandfather, It should give me his real fathers name.
Then it will be ,back to the drawing board !
Thank You again

Hello All - This is my first visit to the site as I am new to genealogy and trying to build my Latty family ancestral tree! Amazing to find so much information in one spot!!
I have Jane Latty B: abt 1781 having three children John, Jane and David, David marrying Sarah Ann Fogden - the same information as Ambly has found so I guess I'm on the right tracks? I have had no joy finding the husband of Jane???
I think I may have made a mistake with David's children? I have them as:
Emma (albeit born only 2 months after David's wedding?)
Sarah Jane
Annie
John William
Fanny and
James Fogden
JeannieR - which one do you think I've got wrong?
I've yet to purchase any certificates to confirm my findings.
My grandfather was Alfred Holgate Latty from Leeds.
Best wishes to all

Hello There.
And my apologies for not replying sooner to your request. As you can see, it is quite a long time since I did the research on the Latty family in Leeds, but it do's include your grandfather Alfred Holgate Latty.....This is what I know about David Latty
Born in c1832 at Hull, he was a child of John Latty c1800-1847 and Jane / Jean c1805-1862
He had siblings
John c1821-1884
William c1830-1844
James c1831-1849
Jane/Jean c1835-1862
David married Sarah Ann Fogden 12th July 1858 at St Peter's church Leeds. His address was given as Woodman Street.......
Their children were
Emma baptised 24/09/1858. Died 1923
Sarah Jane 1861 died 1886
John W born 1865 he died in 1939
Fanny born 1867, she died in 1950
James Fogden Latty, born 1870 he died in 1944
And Hannah / Annie baptised 25th March 1863. However, she was not the child of David and Sarah, but that of Davids sister Jane , whose death was registered in the September qtr of 1862, so I imagine she died in childbirth, and her brother and his wife brought her up.
I have the information for all their marriages, so anything I can help with, please askI can even tell you where of the Latty's are buried too.
When you have made three posts we will be able to exchange emails, whereby I can send you a PDF
Hope this helps in the meanwhile
Best wishes

Thank you so much. I have just made contact with a member of the family after 50 odd years(!) so hopefully my research will expand further in the coming months. The information on Annie/Hannah is very interesting - I certainly hadn't found that piece of family history out!
I'm sure I'll be back to ask you some more questions when I get stuck! I'll certainly post again so that we can exchange emails - :-)
Keep up the great work.
Cheers

good evening from Kilmarnock, Scotland
i see it has been a number of years since the last post on this thread but thought i would reply anyway
i won't add any detail unless a response requires it but i am a direct descendant of the Latta family that went to Australia on the Peerless all those years ago. Robert (1805-1882) was my 3x great grandfather. i come from his son Robert Lindsay Latta that stayed here.
