Ahhhh.......  Jane died at Crook but the death cert says 'sub district of Hamsterley'  they previously lived at Evenwood ......... have you any idea where they would be buried?

You've opened a few doors Adam with these inscriptions.

I've been looking to see which son married 'Barbara' the daughter in law and I think it looks like William in 1855 ..... as I couldn't find him ..... no wonder ... the marriage was in south shields ........I didn't think of looking for him there.

This is great...

jean

Just thinking .... it must be Evenwood

Thankyou for that info Adamand,

My 3xGt Grandmother's brother was called John Atkinson but he was born in 1799 in Hamsterley. I looked up the John and Elizabeth from the gravestone in the IGI and the 1851 census; unfortunately the gravestone year of birth is correct and this John was born in South Shields. :(

Nonetheless many thanks for your efforts  :)

Thanks for that - have Thomas and Jane in my tree, but had no record of these two children so that is great.

I don't know where I saw Young and Wright - but I noticed a message and thought I should reply to that and then didn't as was in a rush. Thought it was Auckland but might not have been........ It wasn't yours then? Tis a Mystery....

Adam .. sorry to bother you again ... but I was wondering if you have any idea which cemetery the above 'stone is in.

I've been raking round the nettles in Evenwood this morning ... but no luck.

A lady did say that quite alot of headstones were taken away a few years ago so I'm wondering if it's gone. .... do you know when the inscriptions were taken?

If it's not in Crook and not in Evenwood... oh ..I also had look round St Mary's at Cockfield and was going to go on to West auckland.....but decided to get some fish and chips instead .... lol

Hello Jean. Yes I know it is at St Helen Church, West Auckland because it took a long time for me to complete those inscriptions. If you go through the oldest (nicely kept) part of the churchyard to the back of the church (not so nicely kept) you will fine the Stone. How can I describe it? Lets say it is Norman arch shape. It is in good condition although you may have to do a little gardening to find the date at the bottom of the stone. There are only 308 stones in total but I think you will find it OK. Let me know when you do.

Hi Adam.... I see what you meant about 'not so well kept' ....... just been and found the headstone ....... (the last one I looked at).

It seems to have sunk a good 2 feet ..... one thing, it wont fall over.
Hope nobody thought my husband and I were grave robbers.......digging in the cemetery.

I would never have found it without your help...thanks.

there's another inscription further down.

'Also Margaret second wife of the above named George Milburn who died at Etherley May 7th 1872 age 72 years.'

So now I know they are all there ..... a threesome..... I took some good photographs.

Thanks, very much appreciated.
Jean

forgot to ask Adam .... you don't have a John Milburn died 1913 anywhere in the area ...... his wife mary is the one you gave me buried in Crook 1919......I was wondering where he is!!

I wonder what happened to John Milburn....... he died six year before Mary and I don't think they left the Crook area ..... they were living in West Roddymoor in 1901 in St Catherine's Parish Crook.

He's my g.g.grandfather ...... I haven't sent for his death cert yet ...... I suppose that's my next step.

Can you put the Milburns up that are in Stanley and Tow Law if you have the time please,

Thanks Adam

Hello Jean.
The graveyard is at St Thomas, Stanley, Crook.
Go up through Roddymoor and turn left at the top.(I think it is the B6299)
The church is a little way down on the right.
I did not do the ones that were over the wall, to the right.
They were in a poor condition and anyway the weather was freezing.  I think I may force myself in to completing them sometime.

Yes Adam......that's where I went today ...St thomas, Stanley Crook ...... and found Sydney Milburn's grave...... It was the cemetery for just Crook I was meaning ...... is it the cemetery between High Jobs Hill and Low Jobs Hill. ... I don't really know what it's called.....but it's quite big. ... with a low wall at the front.

It doesn't really matter Adam ...... I going back up to look round anyway ......

There's quite alot of cemeteries in the area when you start looking.

thanks again

I forgot to say .... boy! it must be a labour of love doing all those headstones ....you deserve a medal .......

Oh Adam .... that's great.....you're doing my job for me and saving me no end of leg work...... It makes life easier (for me ..not you) when I know where to look.

I did look in the older part of Windsor Terr... but only for a few minutes ..... I was shattered and thought I'd go back later and look round properly.

It is great if you say there's a stone for Laidler in there ..... but strange as he died in Herne Bay, Kent ...... however ...Laidler is mentioned on the stone at St Thomas's, Stanley Crook that you gave me ... as the father of Sidney Milburn..... maybe that is what you are thinking of with it being such a strange name. ... giving me Sydney's stone in 1930 has helped me a lot .. as I now know that the family did not go down to Kent until after 1930.

It's a wonder you're not 'bog eyed' doing all these inscriptions.

Thankyou
Jean

Just noticed your post above Adam .... thankyou so much.

Mary Ann May was Laidlers first wife of three ...... very careless with his wives !!!

So she was buried as 'Ann' ..... not 'Mary Ann' .. although she's on all the census as Mary Ann ... if it wasn't for the fact that he had the name 'Laidler' ... I would never have found these people ........ and with your help of course.

Thanks again

Jean

Would it be possible to post the Alderson MI for me.
Believe my Gt Gt Gt grandfather could be Thomas Alderson b Arkendale, Swaledale 1809.
He appears on the 1851 census as father of my Gt Gt grandmother Isabella wilkes b 1848 Shildon mother Unknown. Her marriage cert (1866) however gives no fathers name but a Thomas Alderson is a witness.
Any info on Thomas & family would be appreciated.

Hello Keren. There are two for Kilburn. One readable the other I am afraid is badly weathered but I will give you the words that can be read:-

In memory of Ann, wife of William Byers Kilburn, surgeon of West Auckland, who died June/25/1860 aged 30 years.

John ???burn, surgeon of West Auckland who died May?/1/1852 (could be 1832.) I am guessing Kilburn for the surname because of the possible link with the other Kilburn surgeon.

When I saw this posting I thought there may be quite a few for Carter but there are only 6 in my full list.
1 for Wolsingham, 1 for Etherley, 2 for Lynesack, 1 for Willington.
Here is the only one for St Helen, West Auckland.
I am afraid this one is in a bad condition.

In memory of George Carter, late of Beck ???, departed this life 30/June/1809.
The rest of this stone is totally obliterated.

Hello everyone. I have a gravestone inscription for Lowson at St Helen at West Auckland.
Should I send it by P.M ?
Of course not. I post all my inscriptions on the correct thread and then everyone sees them. I thought that was the idea of the whole thing.
Anyway here it is :-

Sacred to the memory of William Lowson of Pit Green, who died the 2nd day of August 1823 aged 86 years.
Also Ann, relict of the above named William Lowson, who departed this life on the 10th of January 1831 aged 88 years.
And of William Lowson, son of the above named William and Ann Lowson, who departed this life May 14th 1837 aged 57 years.
Also of Richard Lowson, who departed this life on the 30th day of March 1856 aged 83 years.
Also of his wife Margaret Lowson, who departed this life on the 4th day of March 1868? aged 94 years.
Modify :-
Whoops. There you are!!!! I broke my own rule because I should have posted it on the West Auckland thread , it could have then been seen in the correct place.

Thank you very much for the information, Adam.  It sounds like you made a special trip to look at the stones - I was assuming that you had a typed transcription document that you could just look at!

Unfortunately I can't tie in these Heslops with my own, at the moment, but do appreciate your effort on my behalf and will keep the information in case I do ever find a link.

Many thanks again.

Hi Adam, thank you for those, that's very kind of you.

The Mankin's are cousins so great to have that.

I hadn't come across thos Chamberlains before and I can't find them in the censuses either, but they may well be relatives so I'll dig around a bit more.

Was there another Chamberlain headstone? I just wondered as it was Chamberlain (Robson) in your list which caught my attention as I have links to both Chamberlain's and Robson's in Auckland but didn't know of a marriage between them.

Thanks again, Paul.

Hello!

most of my northern ancestors seem to come from Bishopthorpe in York, but the mother of my 4xg grandmother was born in Gainford.

Posted below what I found about what is presumably her, but I also see that her father, Henry, is said to be a 'native of Paddock Mire St H Auckland'...first link I have to any of my family from there.

Pretty sure Henry's grandfather & father were Joseph & Robert (m Ann Kirkham) respectively, but wondered whether if any M.I's indicate any longer establishment of 'my' Wades in the area?

Much obliged for any information on offer!

Hello Cassie. I do not have any for Selby.
St Helen was my first posting with the offer to look up gravestone inscriptions.
At the time I thought that there may be to many names on the first posting so I split them. ie
A--O and P--Y.
On all the graveyard/cemeteries that I have posted the first posting has all the surnames on the gravestones in that churchyard.
So the best thing is read the first posting and then read the messages and you may get lucky and find what you are looking for and if not, request the information and I will post it.

Hi Adamand,

Could you please tell me what the MI is for the name LEE I have read the whole thread and can't see them mentioned but they are on your list.

By the way I think you've done a great job, it's really kind of you

Thanks Chrissie

We have just been informed that Adamand died earlier this month.  This is sad news indeed as he was a stalwart of the Durham boards.  He will be sadly missed.
