Am searching for MOORE families from Seaton and Beer Devon.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Dianne

Dear Diane,
Given that Seaton & Beer records exist from 1584 to the present day, and that MOORE is a fairly common surname, please can you be a little more specific regarding timeframe and forenames?
-
Certainly DOB7 and thank you for your interest....had posted MOORE in one name studies but was moved here hence my lack of details.
Would like to learn more of James MOORE b: 1780 siblings, parents, etc.
I am told there are still members of the MOORE families living in Seaton today
so it would be great to find a link with one of them, as I intend going to Devon in 2010 for research & exploring the area,

OK, for starters, the IGI shows a marriage between Elizabeth COPP & James MOORE which I suspect may be the banns called in his parish, dated 11 May 1808.
James the father was not baptised in Seaton & Beer. I'm assuming that you have guessed at his birth year? The 1851 census shows:
Name Relationship Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
James MOORE Head W 86 M Gardner Tignell----
Address: Short Hill, Beer
Census Place: Seaton & Beer Axminster, Devonshire
PRO Reference: HO/107/1862 Folio: 712 Page: 23 FHL Film: 0221010
so, could it be that James was born earlier? Have you seen the full transcripts of any of the baptisms - is the father's occupation mentioned?
-
Thank you DOB7 for your time & info.
Unfortunately
haven't seen full transcripts of any of the baptisms and interesting to hear that James wasn't baptised in Seaton & Beer...have mainly taken the children from IGA except my line James Henry MOORE b: 1818 Seaton & Beer, which was in family records in NZ.
It is quite possible from what you have posted that he was born earlier.
Much appreciated...

I would recommend e-mailing the Devon Record Office devrec[at]devon.gov.uk and asking them to check a couple of the later baptisms for you to see what occupation was given for James. (This was given for baptisms after 1812)
I would definitely choose Hannah, as it is the latest, and at least one of the others. Of course, James may not have become a gardener until much later in life.
Also, ask the DRO to check the marriage entry - it may give James' parish of origin, and some witnesses' names which could be useful clues.
-
Thank you DOB7 for your generous and detailed advice. It is also extremely good of you to give me guidance in what queries to put to the DRO. Will get onto that now.
Much appreciated.

Good to hear from you. Have registered just waiting for confirmation :)

re My earlier posting.
Was told by my cousin yesterday that he had heard from his father that James MOORE who married Elizabeth Copp originally came from Isle of Man. That there were three orphaned sons, one went to America, another to Australia & the other to New Zealand.
Is anyone able to confirm the above please.

Hello Mr. Tibbs,
My name is Michael Tench and I am trying to tie the branches of the Tench family in the North East with my branches in Shropshire, Worcestershire and Cheshire. They may have travelled with the Crowley family from this area to the North East.
I wonder if you could give your earliest Tench ancestor names and dates to see if I could tie them in to the overall Tench family
Thanks
Michael Tench
