Title: Help for info on Hamiltons from Glassford.
Post by: jilliehm on Friday 12 June 09 14:50 BST (UK)
I'm desperate for any info on Hamilton family who farmed at Shawtonhill,Glassford. James Hamilton married Elizabeth(nee Wilson) in 1838.
Children = John,Thomas,Martha,Janet,James, Jane, William,Robert and Bethia.
I wonder if anyone lives near Glassford graveyard. James jnr emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1870's ( my great grandfather) and we have little news of the Scottish family. Thanks

Shawtonhill Farm is near the village of Chapeton, between Strathaven and East Kilbride.  I grew up in Chapelton and the farmer at Shawtonhill Farm was Robert Hamilton.  I believe that the Hamilton family still farm at Shawtonhill.
There is a graveyard at Chapelton and possibly the Hamilton's would be there.  Although there is a village called Glassford near Strathaven.  The Glassford you are referring to would be the parish.  It gets a bit confusing if you don't know the area!!!!!
Hope this is of some help.

Hi

I live in Glassford and will try to find any link in the Glassford Cemetery to the names and dates you have given.   As stated by the previous response the farm comes under Chapelton which did come under Glassford Parish so any graves could be in either cemetery.  Give me a day or two to check for you.

I believe I am descnded from William Hamilton born at Laigh Shawtonhill in 1743, his father Hugh born in 1707 & his grandfather Robert born 1681.  I would be interested in any records or graves in the Glassford parish.  Thanks

My Uncle Robert still farms at Shawtonhill farm.he was born in 1954.

My grandfather was also Robert and farmed at Shawtonhill and was born on 20 July 1913. He married Mary Brown Strachan born on 10 January 1925.

His father was William Hamilton and he married 2 sisters, first Christine and then she died and he married Agnes, who was my Grandfather's mother.

I have just started researching this so am at an early stage.

Hamilton's had both Shawton and Shawtonhill. Was your great grandfather Thomas or Robert.

Interesting, in 1873 William is listed as holding Shawtonhill and Robert had Shawton.

I just started researching the Hamilton link, it is my Mum's maiden name.

Her grandfather or Great grandfather (prob grandfather though) was William Hamilton who married two sisters after 1 died. He married Christine initially (who was also known as Margaret I think) then he married Agnes. They were both Allisons from Newton Mearns (Glasgow).

This thread seems to help a bit and when I get more into it, I can speak to my Mum further and my uncle and see if I can get more confirmation of the history.

You can see this William was born in 1853 or 1854 )so I assume he was my Mum's Great grandfather) and had a son William who was age 12 in the 1901 census (Who I assume is my Mum's Grandfather) so it may be a different line from you but will prob meet a few generations back as they often do, especially as they all linked to Shawtonhill.

There are 3 farms and a cottage at Shawtonhill. My Grandfather Robert (born 1913 owned Shawtonhill and East Shawtonhill and then they sold East Shawtonhill to the Strachan family (who are related through to my Mum's mother).

My uncle Robert Hamilton still owns Shawtonhill and the bungalow.

I'll leave you with a bit more of the ownership history on the farms from 1770.

Shawtonhill - Parts held by: by John Allan, David Crawford, Wm Curr, John Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton, John Semple.
Shawton - parts held by: Mr. Hart and Mr. Marshall.

There were many other Hamilton's who held farms in this area and it is hard to say at this point if they are related to your line.

However if you go here:

http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

Click on search enter Shawton you can see what records are available and same for Shawtonhill.

Hi

I'm wondering how you got on with the Hamilton research.  My Gt Gt Grandmother was Martha Fergus (or Ferguson) who is listed on the 1851 census living with James and Elizabeth Hamilton.  She was their niece.  Martha's mother's maiden name was Hamilton so I guess she was a sister of James.  Incidentally I live in New Zealand too.
