I would be grateful if somebody could track down some details relating to my great grandparents John Johnson and Julia Kenward.
Julia came from Limpsfield, born around 1818 according to later records. John came from Cocking in Sussex. They probably married around 1837 as their first son was born there 13 June 1838. He was given the very unusual name of Sommerton (no known connection with Somerton in Somerset).
In short I am hoping to find:
1 A record of Julia Kenward's birth/baptism. Details of her parents would be great.
2 A record of the marriage of John and Julia.
3 Any suggestion as to the origins of Sommerton as a first name. Does it have any particular resonances in East Surrey?
Any reply will be gratefully received.

Free BMD has a marriage with John Johnson & Julia KENNERD on the same page, Godstone RD, Q3 1837,
If you get a copy this will give you the name of her father,

Thank you, Jane.
So my ancestors were among the first batch to use this new-fangled form of registration. I wonder what they thought of it!
I will certainly follow that up with GRO. Many thanks.

Hi Peter
For the Limpsfield PRs you could try the East Surrey FHS research centre http://www.eastsurreyfhs.org.uk/lingfieldcentre.htm I have visited them in the past to look up various local registers but if it is not convenient to visit they do help with enquiries.

Hi Kerry
Thanks for the tip. I will contact them and see what they suggest.
I live in Somerset so it's a little out of my way! However a trip to the south east is long overdue so perhaps I can work it in.
Thanks again

Peter, I don't know if you found the baptism of a brother on family search?
William Benjamin 14/2/1841 at Limpsfield?
So lucky that they married within civil registration, it makes life so much easier :)

Just an extra thought but if you're making the trip to either the research centre or the Surrey History Centre at Woking you could look up the marriage in the parish registers which might give you the parents names. As Godstone covers Limpsfield it's quite likely that's where they married,

That's interesting, Jane.
William Benjamin was born in Longcot, Berks (near Shrivenham) as was his older sister Charlotte Emily. She was baptised there and the record tells us that John was working on the railroad (presumably the GWR). William Benjamin was born 1 January 1841 so it seems that he was taken back to Limpsfield for baptism.
I'm grateful for that as it fills a gap between Berkshire and the family's next appearance in Tonbridge, Kent in the census of 1841 where John and Julia stayed for a while and produced two more children.
Many thanks
Peter
P.S. As I was typing I see you have posted again! Yes, I think I shall need to do that as well as looking for Julia's baptism. Thanks. Peter.

Hi Valda
What a wonderful collection of given names. I hope I can claim them!
As you say I do need to carefully check the original entry for Julia's baptism. A misrecording or a mistranscription from Kenward to Kember is not impossible and she does fit very nicely in the sequence of James and Harriet's children. The right year too!.
Thank you for all the other goodies too. There's plenty to think about there.
Thank you so much for all that detail.

Hi Peter
The first step is to see what information Julia gave about her father on her marriage and see if it confirms his name was James.

Hi Valda
Yes. I sent off for the marriage record as soon as I received Jane's reply to my original post so I guess it will be a few days yet.
Thanks

I have just received the marriage certificate for John Johnson and Julia Kenward 11 Sep 1837. They were married in and living at Tattsfield (modern Tatsfield? - about 3 miles from Limpsfield). John's father was Benjamin, which I already had. Julia's father was JAMES.
This keeps open the option that Julia=Julia Kember christened 8 Mar 1818 at Limpsfield (parents James and Harriet). It would be WONDERFUL if somebody check that entry in the Limpsfield PRs. If not I'll follow up Kerry's helpful tip.
By the way, Valda, what was your source for the marriage of Richard Lepard and Allice Kenward? I cannot find it on Family Search.
Thanks for all you help everybody

Hi Valda
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately I can't replicate whatever you did to get to the Lepard/ Kenward marriage. I'm getting error messages on "events" and "directory". Perhaps that's the problem.
