Title: Culbert Hamill
Post by: Aspen on Wednesday 10 June 09 22:23 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on Ellen Spence married to Culbert Hamill. I think it says Dalmuir for his address. I am attaching the marriage cert. They were married in Convoy Co Donegal. Did they live in Scotland after they married? How many children did they have? Any info. would be great.
Regards,
 Aspen

Hello Aspen

In all of Scotland there is only one person on the 1901 census with that name.

1901 HAMILL CULBERT M 31 OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 027/00 034.

Am out of credits and am on my way out.

Shall get the copy for you tomorrow.  Unless someone is really desperate   :O)  Regards,   Steve .............

Thanks Aspen,

Well, happily a tidy census record and Cuthbert and Ellen had been busy.  There may have been other children born, but you'll have to wait until the 1911 census comes out.

We have at 7 Swindon Place, Old Kirkpatrick

Culbert Hamill, Head, 31, Labourer in shipyard b. Ireland
Ellen Hamill. Wife, 28,  b. Ireland
Thomas Hammill, Son, 7
Alexander Hammill, Son, 6
Sarah Hammill, Dau, 4
Mary J Hammill, Dau, 2

All children down as born, Dunbartonshire, Dalmuir.

Birth entries for all can be sourced from the official govt website at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  Free to register and do some basic searching.

To view and download - min. spend of £6.00, buys 30 credits which allows for downloading and saving 5 certs.  Do not send off for hard copies as they give no extra info.  (The £6 would get you the 4 childrens entries and also do one marriage lookup)

If you want a copy of the census record please forward your e-mail address by pm.  Regards,   Steve  :)

It would appear that in all of Scotland from 1855 to 2006 there are 4 Culbert Hammill deaths - I'd have bet a months wages on only one.  Although out by 2 years - if your chap died in Scotland this is probably him below.  The cert is downloadable.  The others are not as they died after 1956 and they're the wrong age.  (younger).

1956 HAMILL CULBERT     M 85 PAISLEY /RENFREW 573/01 0187

and lastly - wife Ellens death

1943 HAMILL ELLEN   SPENCE F 73 RENFREW /RENFREW 575/00 0022

Beware - Scotlands People can become addictive.

This will be the last post from me here.  Good luck with the rest of your searching.

Update:  PM with attached census record sent.

Regards,  Steve ......

One last amendment - a link for a site with info about Dalmuir:

Hi

Culbert Hamill is my wife's Great Grandfather. He had a son Thomas who in turn had a daughter Helen Spence Hamill who is my wife's mother.
If you would like any more info I have a small amount.

Hello Mark,
This is great. I would love to have any information on this family. I can go back as far as 1800 for the grandfather of Ellen Spence. I have the marriage cert for Ellen and Culbert also.
Kind Regards,
Aspen

Hi Aspen,
I realise this is not a recent posting, and I don't know if this is of any use to you, but I recently purchased the marriage certificate of John Hamill & Margaret Salisbury, 10th June 1892, Old Kilpatrick.  Culbert Hamill was a witness.  John Hamill's parents are listed as Thomas Hamill, Boilerwork Labourer, and Sarah Hamill, m.s. Dougan.

Thank you for your interest. I would think that Thomas was a brother of Culbert and I think their parents came from Northern Ireland. I would be happy for any information you have and will share any that I have.
Kind Regards

Sorry Aspen, that's all I have. I didn't know of the Hamill connection before the marriage cert, I was
looking for Margaret Salisbury.  I notice you said you have the marriage cert of Culbert & Ellen, so can you confirm that his parents were Thomas Hamill & Jane Dougan?
However I do have Hamill's connected to another branch of my tree, I haven't found anything yet to connect them to either John or Culbert.  My link there is a Hugh Hamill, born 1871, Duntocher to Joseph Hamill & Euphemia Simpson - do any of those names appear in your files?

Hi Helen
It only has Thomas as the father on the marriage cert, for Culbert, no mother.
Thomas was born 1847 and he married Sarah Duggan 8th. April 1866, she was 22 and Thomas was 19 in Ballinderry Antrim
Thomas's father was Thomas and he married Elizabeth Culbert.
Sarah's father was Hugh Duggan and mother was Jane ?
Thomas died 1920 in the poorhouse, Renfrew Scotland
Sarah died 1918 94 Paisley Road Renfrew
Culbert b. 27/02/1870 Glenavy Antrim
William John b. 28/06/1873 Glenavy Antrim
Samuel b. 01/05/1875 Antrim
Anne Jane b. 01/01/1879 Antrim
William John married Margaret Sailsbury June 1893! Is that the cert you have?
I look forward to your reply.
Kind Regards
Aspen

Hi Aspen,
Thanks for all that info.  :)
The marriage cert is dated 10 June 1892, and it just has John, not William John, but everything else adds up.  Do you want a copy?

Gosh, that was a long time ago. Yes, Thomas was his father. I did not go back any further to find his mum. Thomas is on the marriage cert. I think there is an Antrim connection for Hamill.
