Title: Corstorphine 1890
Post by: JuanToomany on Wednesday 10 June 09 16:19 BST (UK)
Hello folks

Trying to find where my great grandparents were married. It would appear to have been around 1890 in Corstorphine but i'd love to know where. Names are Daniel Banks and Annie Russell. Thanks in advance

Hi there,

Daniel Banks and Annie Russell married the 22nd of April 1890 in Corstorphine parish. There is no church mentioned, but they were married according to the Church of Scotland.

It was common practice for couples to be married at their home address (usually the bride's) during this time. Another common place was the minister's own house - the Manse.

Daniel and Annie are staying at 150 Dundee Street, Edinburgh in 1891.

Thanks so much for that. I guess I now need to find out where the two of them came from and work from there

According to the 1891 census, which Hume mentions, Daniel was b. Thurso, circa 1868  and Annie born Bannockburn, circa 1870.

When looking for Daniel, also look at Donald - Daniel and Donald were often used interchangeably.

So if im following this correctly it looks like my great great grandfather George was no longer around in 1891 when Daniel would have been 23. He lived with his mum Sarah and siblings in Blackhall....phew!

Looks like he died at some stage before 1881.

The IGI (extracted) has the birth of an Annie Russell in St Ninian, Stirling 7 Dec 1869. Parents - William Russell and Margaret Forsyth.

I'll see if I can find the death of George Banks.

The most likely death of George was in Cramond, Edinburgh, 1875. Aged 34.

There are quite a few but this one looks the nearest in age. If so, they would have moved down 1871-1875.

The IGI has a patron submission for the marriage of George Banks and Sarah Bremner in Keis, Wick on 16 May 1862. It records George's parents as James Banks and Christina Sutherland.

This would need to be checked against the Old Parish records.

There is a George Banks baptism at roughly the correct  time period in Thurso (father - James)  and one in Canisbay (father - John)  so that a marriage or death cert for him would be needed to make sure who his parents were.

Given that their first son on the 1871 census was a James, one of the Thurso baptisms are most likely:

28 Feb 1838, Thurso. Parents - James Banks and Elizabeth Campbell

I'll check up on George Banks and Sarah Bremner's parents in a minute or so.

George and Sarah married in Keiss, Wick Landward on May 16 1862

George was a farm servant, aged 21 and living in Olrig (possibly Scrabster or Stemster). His parents were James Banks, farm servant (deceased) and Christina, maiden surname Sutherland

Sarah was a farm servant, aged 26 and living in Keiss, Wick. Her parents were Donald Bremner, farmer and Janet, maiden surname <what looks like> Wheir.

So Daniel/Donald was named after Sarah's father :)

Freereg www.freereg.org.uk also has good coverage of Caithness but George's baptism isnt there - just the one with mother Elizabeth Campbell and no marriage showing for James Banks and Christian/Christina Sutherland.

It does say that it's not 100% complete.

This is the nearest that I can get to George in the 1851. The others don't fit age/father's occupation:

Newlands, Latheron
38 ED 1 Page 4
Sutherland
John, 36, fisher, b. Latheron
Grizela, sister, 47, ag lab, b. Latheron
Amelia, sister, 34, ag lab, b. Latheron
Isabella, sister, 32, ag lab, b. Latheron
Banks
Margaret, niece, 15, b. Wick
Ann, niece, 13, b. Latheron
George, nephew, 10, b. Latheron
James, nephew, 8, b. Latheron

Can you give me more details of John Fletcher - age/DoB (I see 1885 ish) , who married, etc.

Hi Gadget. John married my grandmother Annie Banks in Grangemouth probably around 1915 as my mother was born 1921. So this is just a guess. I also know he was born I guess in the 1880s at a place called the Lodge in Corstorphine Edinburgh
Title: Re: Corstorphine 1890

1841:

Strath, Watten
42 Ed 2 p 8

Banks
James ag lab. b. Scotland
Christina,35
Margaret, 5
Ann, 4
George, 9 months
Janet Smith, 60

all but James b. Caithness

Note that in the 1841 census ages were grouped into 5 year age bands so the 35 would be 35-39, etc.

I don't see a marriage of an Ann(ie) Banks (variations) to a Fletcher at the moment.

I'll have a better look later but I have to go now. Maybe someone else can help as well.
