Looking for descendants of Stephen Cherrington and Rebecca Cherrington who left England in in 1864 - sailing on the Nimroud.
After a short time in New Zealand they travelled to Australia.
Not liking Australia ( his wife had passed away), he returned to New Zealand with his three children. I am trying to find their descendants
I know that Harriet Cherrington (born in England 1861) married Joseph Cooper a farmer in Makaraka, Gisburne in 1894.
I think Elizabeth Cherrington (born Australia 1866) married Silas James Stevenson in Gisburne in 1891 The girls had a brother Isaac, born England 1856. I believe he returned to New Zealand with his father but dont know if he married.
Can anyone please help me with any more information about the family.
Donut.

Thanks Bren. :)
Hello Donut
Since the time of your last enquiry, we're happy to be able to tell you that some advances have been made with our NZ BDM records ... and you are now able to search for a great many historical records, online.
http://bdmhistoricalrecords.indentityservices.govt.nz/home/
Here's an example of births of children listed for a "Harriett and Joseph COOPER" (who very possibly are, who you may be seeking ?).
Births
1900 - Daphne Hellen COOPER
1901 - Ida Marjorie COOPER and Jean Mary COOPER
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
... and listed for "a Harriet (spelt with just the one "t") and Joseph COOPER, are
1898 - Laurence Joseph COOPER
1896 - Genevieve Eileen COOPER
1895 - Nora Isabel COOPER
... so these too, may be children of the same Harriett and Joseph who married in 1894 ?
Armed with this information, you can then take a look for marriage records (currently available online, up to 1928), for these COOPERS.
[Wise also to check the death index, as some of these children may have died in infancy or remained unmarried].
Once you've sorted out some "possibilities", then check the Archives NZ website (link in the Resources section of this board). Often names and locations of people can be found there, if for example their wills have been probated or they've been involved in other transactions recorded by a government department.
Happy hunting ! ;)

Hi Lu,
Didn't realise I could search on line now. I will turn my attentions there.
Someone has given me some information from the NZSG Cemetery Fiche and at the end it says:
Location Makaraka Cemetery Gisborne E04.06v2. Would you know what these numbers refer to?
Thanks for your information on possible births for Harriet.

Hi
Fairly sure that the "E04.06" is the reference number of the microfiche record (which contains the transcriptions of monumental inscriptions for cemeteries in the Gisborne (East Cape) area).
[I don't think you need worry about the "v2" - seems it might just refer to "version 2" of the NZSG CD which contains a lot of this type of reference information ?].

You can search the NZSG library and check any of these refs

Subject NEW ZEALAND--EAST CAPE--CEMETERIES

MI BR
The fiche version is available and the hradcopy at the NZSG library

Hi Robyn
I am new to this site. Yes Elizabeth Cherrington did marry Silas James Stevenson 15/4/1891. They had three children.
One girl and two boys. All were born between 1893 and 1896. Silas died in 1898 aged 29. Elizabeth never remarried and died in 1940 aged 73. Elizabeth was born in Penrith NSW (near Sydney). Hope this helps. Silas was my father's cousin.
Cheers Pam

Hi Donut
The two Cherrington girls married but from what I have managed to gleen over a period of time is that Isaac didn't marry. He died in NZ in 1934 aged 77 years. (Don't know where at this point). Elizabeth had 3 children : 1 girl, 2 boys. Her husband died on their wedding anniversary 7 years later in 1898. Have names of children as they were my fathers cousins. Hope that this will give you a bit more info.
Cheers Pam
