Could someone make her look better, please?
Foolishly, some years ago, before I knew better, I sellotaped the photo where it was coming apart. Thank you.
I wonder how old she is there; she was born about 1856.
-
Here is Great-granny in 1921.
-
A very quick clean . Not sure about her nose. :(

Hi Joy......Heres a colour interpretation of your photo.
Carolyn :)
-
Hi Joy.......Heres the other one.
Carolyn :)
-
and in a frame.
Carolyn :)
-
Thank you, everyone.
It's a shame that the torn part was over Great-granny's nose!
Does anyone have any idea what age she might be, please?
-
Joy,
Try changing the subject of the post to include a request for age, some of the people who are good at that sort of thing might not look at the post otherwise.
Robert
-
So she is 65 in 2nd pic............. I imagined at first that the 1st pic she was mid 30's ... but that is a pure guess....
xin
-
Thank you.
-
What age do you think Great-granny is, please, in the first photo?
Thank you.
-
Here's my version of the first pic, I'll have a splash at the other one another day.
Don't beat yourself over the head about the sticky tape, you never know, more of the photo might have gone missing if you hadn't used it.
-
beautiful Paula
xin
-
I liked your sepia one, xin.
The frame you put round it sets it off a treat.
-
Regarding age, I think she was probably in her early to mid 40s in the first picture.
-
Hi Everyone,
What wonderful restores these are! and how lovely she looks after her nose 'surgery'
My guesstimate late 30's early 40's depending on the restores!
They are all very lovely but some make her look older than others!
Love her broach and the locket and so on.

8) Thought you might, Rabbit. 8)
-
;D ;D ;D
-
That is very interesting, because I don't think she's older than mid 30s ??? ???
Having said that, I'm pretty much always wrong. ;D ;D
It's rude to ask a lady's age, or so I was always told ;D ;D
Fab restorations as usual..

Thank you, I hadn't thought of that. I don't feel so bad about that now you have said that.
Thank you, everyone, for your tremendous help.
So, the first photo could have been taken around 1890 - 1895 and, as my Granny was born in 1891, then that is her Mum when Granny was a little girl.
Thank you.
-
....and here's the second one...
-
Hi Paula,
What a wonderful picture, but then so are all the restores
Very elegant indeed.
Rabbit B ;D
-
I was pleased with that one, Rabbit.
It is most certainly a locket she is wearing, and there is a gentleman's portrait on it. Can't make out the features, but you can see enough of face/collar/jacket to be able to tell by the shape that it's a feller.
-
Hi Paula,
That is a new one on me, I haven't come across one like that before!
Obviously had no front on it! I did see it and forgot to mention it but I couldn't see the detail!
Rabbit B ;D
-
My Gran had one, it's double sided with glass front and back. Gran had a photo of hubby one side and No 1 son the other.
-
Thank you very, very much.
Now, of course, I want to know who it is whose photo is in the locket :-)
Could it be husband? father (deceased)? son, maybe? one was killed in WW1.
-

How lovely Paula,
Is it still in the family?
Hi JoyKM,
How frustrating not to know who it is!
Rabbit B ;D
-
Yes, Rabbit, I've got it. Very dear to me that is.
I'm thinking...could be a Bible she is reading, and there is great sadness and courage in her face. The locket is well in view. She has that high neck insert that was on the way out in 1913....so I'm comfortable with the 1921 date.
Be just right for a son who was killed in the war.
-
Hi Paula,
What a very lovely thing to have, I have not seen one of those before. Most interesting thanks for blowing it up for me!
I have seen them with locks of hair in and broaches as well, but never a locket!
Having said that when my fiance was on active service I always wore one with his picture in, I never took it off! So same idea but different sort of locket.
Rabbit B ;D
-
That is amazing. Thank you very much. I have peered at the picture so many times my eyes are going cross-eyed :-)
If I posted a photo that I have of my great-uncle who was killed in 1918, could you look to see if you think it might be him, please?
I agree with you about the sadness and courage.
-
Oops, Internet went strange and posted twice, sorry about that!
-
1,000 to one chance, Joy, but that means there's still a chance.
Let's give it a go.
-
Thank you. Here he is then, I hope.
I have found two more of Great-granny, in one of which she is wearing the locket again. I'll do them later, if no one minds.
-
Thank you. Here he is then, I hope.
The more I look, the more unsure I am.
Maybe the photo in the locket is of her brother who, in the 88th Connaught Rangers, died in Mauritius in 1879, but I don't have a photo of him.
-
If that's her son, his features aren't much like hers, but he looks similar to the locket...perhaps the locket is her husband....
-
Well JoyKM,
Whoever he is he is a nice looking chap. I would also say that he was an intelligent man with a forehead like that!
Rabbit B ;D
-
Thank you.
I wish that I had known him. I saw his name on the memorial at Ploegsteert the year before last. He was born in 1888 and died on my Granny's birthday in 1918.
Okay then, here is the only photo that I have of Great-Grandad. He was born in 1852 and died in 1934.
-
And I * think * that the man in this photo is Great-Granny's father.
Back later with two more of her.
Edited - this is her brother-in-law.
-
Here is Great-granny with her grandson Ron who was born in 1920.
-
And the last one of Great-granny - looks as if it is washing day :-)
-
that is one heck of a question you pose.. dating her poor age lol. I would wager a guess at about 28 or so or possibly very early 30's. You gave 2 clues - her birth date and her older picture.
-
The pose of the man in the locket and the dark line that could be moustache makes me think it might be her father....
Couldn't resist this one, I love back of the house scenes....

That's what I was wondering, too, if it was her father.
I love that one of Great-granny washing, thank you :-)
-
Great one Paula ;D ;D
Mark :)
-
Love back yards, Mark, that's where you see the 'true' picture.
-
More than likely, it would have been in Bonnington Square, Vauxhall / Lambeth.

Hi Paula,
That is superb, so much character in it!
Rabbit B ;D
-
Isn't there, Rabbit, I love it.
-
The more I look, the more I think I can really see her, if you know what I mean.
What sort of age do you think she would be here?
-
Mid to late forties.... but remember I'm nearly always wrong ;D ;D
Mark :)
-
Hi Joy...I loved this one so much I just had to give it a clean ;D ;D ;D
Carol
-
Thank you very much.
I shall treasure these.
Amazing how much more one can see when a photo has been scanned. What's that bottle doing on the windowsill? :-)
Mid to late forties - born about 1856. I am hopeless guessing ages :-)
-
There's also an oil lamp, I wonder if that was when you had to nip out in the dark to the outside loo.....
She looks a smashing person, I wish she was mine.
I'm no good with ages, but I will say, in the one with the locket she looks much more care worn than in the one with the little un....though by photo and frocks they are clearly years apart.
Perhaps the loss of great uncle was bearing down on her at the time.
-
Hi Joy...What a lovely photo of bygone days....this a real treasure to have and deserves to be preserved 8)
Hi Paula...nice to see you back :D
Carol
-
Carol, you've no idea how good it is to be back...Going cold turkey from the Internet is no fun at all....... :(
-
Hi JoyKM,
Now I have been looking carefully at the pictures and the comments and my guess is mid 40 to late 40's!
The hard work and many children aged them fast in those days. Not to mentions wars and so on!
I remember those tin baths too do! Does anyone else?
Rabbit B ;D

I remember those tin baths too do! Does anyone else?
Rabbit B ;D
I have a photo of my daughter being bathed in one in 1972 or 1973 - and I still have a couple of tin baths in my garden shed.
Robert
-
Certainly do, Rabbit, used to use one for a paddling pool in the summer when I was a little un...
-
Hi Robert, Hi Paula,
They were also good for bathing the dog! You are so lucky to still have them Robert they are so very useful!

Getting it right may go to my head ;D

I could play with this thread for hours.... :D
-
Superlatives fail me, Paula ;D ;D
You really are getting the hang of this game ;D ;D ;D
Yet another brilliant restoration ;D
Well done
Mark :)
xx

That, Paula,
Is a fantastic piece of work! Well done you very clever person you!

I could play with this thread for hours.... :D
And I am very, very happy that you are doing so :-)
Thank you.
Here, Great-granny would have been about 64.
The little boy is now 88 :-)
-
Some are easier to do than others...that one just gave itself up, no fight at all.
Wish they were all like that. 8)
-
..and...
-
Hi Paula,
That one is superb! I'll bet that JoyKM will be thrilled with that!
Rabbit B ;D
-
Couldn't make the picture clear, Rabbit, so I did 'surgery' and put in an awful lot of dark colours...
-
;D ;D ;D
-
..and...
I am overwhelmed, and shall never ever forget your kindness.
-
Two more to go, Joy, but you may have to wait, got a wedding to attend to...now where's me new hat............. ;D 8)
-
One down, one to go.
I love this little pic, felt I had to 'do' something for it....
-
Lovely Job Paula,
Excellent even, love the way you did his 'tash'
Rabbit B ;D
-
Thank you.
I shall try to put my great-grandfather here again so he can be seen better. Last time I had to reduce it.
No, didn't work.
-
;D At least you tried, Joy...
-
... and failed :-(
I can't get it below 728 KB
-
Never mind, Joy, go for the bijou version.
Here's the last one, making a full set...
I've enjoyed this thread so much...I guess it shows.
They are lovely photos.

They are lovely photos.
I am glad that you have enjoyed it. It has given great pleasure to me.
Now, hoping that this will work - in honour of my great-uncle (in the last picture), by my grandfather (his brother-in-law) -
-
That's lovely, Joy, rounds the thread of well.
Thank you for posting it.
-
Thank you. I am so relieved that it worked :-)
(still being a novice with scanning, I never know if it will turn out the right size!)
-
Hi Joy,
Join the club, I had to have lessons from a friend before I got it right! It had been a most interesting thread, thank you for sharing these lovely pictures.
Rabbit B ;D
-
My pleasure :-)
Have I asked - what age do you think are my great-grandfather and my great-uncle?
-
Ggrandpa in his sixties, gUnc ten years younger ;D ;D
Mark :)

Hi Joy,
Old boy mid sixties, younger man mid to late 40's
Rabbit B ;D

Don't know about age, but the photo has a 1910ish look about it to me.

Hi Paula,
That sounds about right to me.
Rabbit B ;D
-
Thank you.
I should have said - taking into account the facts that great-grandfather was born in 1852 and died in 1934, and great-uncle was born in 1888 and died in WW1 in 1918.
I just love looking at the photos again :)
