Post by: Anderson on Monday 08 June 09 13:31 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where I can download the passenger list for the Stebonhealth that arrived Sydney 28 feb 1858. Tried most places but just wants to tell you ship details. We are after my wife's g/g/g/grandmother Eliza DUDLEY widow (nee MEHEGAN)who came out with her 3 children Jane abt 15, George abt 15, Mary abt 11. Eliza would have been born abt 1823 (don't know where)
Many thanks

I have done extensive research on this particular (notorious) voyage of the Stebonheath.
If you like, visit my family history website:  http://www.thenoones.id.au/ and go to the chapter on Martin's voyage out.

It's a very interesting story and one that few would like to make today. As a young boy I made a 6 week trip by ship with my parents and we had a ball. I'm glad I was born in this time and not in the mid 1800's.
Thank you for you kind help in putting a bit more of my wife's history together.
Regards
Anderson
PS  I had a really nice lady send me information on our Irish family coming to Australia. But with our computer crashing lost her contact details.

If you would like you can see the report printed in the Argus Newspaper on the 22nd April 1858 (the -Parliament Paper from the Immigration Board) regarding the Stebonheath voyage.

Hi there,

Just adding to Kris's post:

brother in law William ? ? - William HUNT, Queanbeyan - it is clearer in the last column which gives sponsor's name
uncle ? - this says "uncle, as above"

Do you know Eliza's maiden surname?  A Jane HUNT died at Queanbeyan in 1862 with parents Daniel and Mary - just a possible.

Hi Debra
Jane is my wife's 4x great grandmother. Jane's mother & father was Mary & Daniel Mehegan. Jane married Patrick Kinsela & they lived in what is now Queanbeyan. Patrick was the chief police constable in Queanbeyan & was killed on duty in 1841. Jane then married a publican named William Hunt. Jane's sister Eliza was the one who came out with her children on the Stebonheath. Can't find Patrick coming into NSW as there was 3 Patrick Kinsela's arrive in NSW within a 20 year period.
Thanks for your interest & reply.

Oh, good guess then  ;D  Just read your other posts re Patrick  ::)
A bit more info

Patrick KINSELA
John Barry  Arr. 1821 (7 year sentence, tried Dublin)
Cert of Freedom 1827 (renewed 1831, and 1837 - mutilated)
Tailor
Born 1803
Native of Queens County
Married Mary SLATTERY 1831 (she was still serving her sentence)

Patrick KINSELA
Forth Arr. 1833 (7 year sentence)
Cert of Freedom 1850 (must have committed colonial offence/s)
Farm servant

Patrick KINSELA
Dorothy Arr 1821 (7 year sentence)
Government employed at Parramatta in 1825

Sorry to add to your woes but you missed another possible two......

(I like this one)
Eliza  Arr. Port Jackson from Dublin via Hobart 24 Nov 1833
Patrick KINCHELA, no age, Clerk, native of Ireland (travelled as a cabin passenger, so a bit better off than the other immigrants)

Patrick KINSELLA
Phoenix Arr. 1826 (7 year sentence)
1828 census:
aged 25
assigned to Mr PENDRAY, Sydney
Holding a ticket of leave

Re previous post http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,386992.0.html  I had a look at the record of the Margaret arriving 1831 and there only appears to be Governor Bourke, his family and entourage listed as passengers.  It was carrying merchandise and no mention of immigrants or convicts.  No Kinsela or variations.

You can see why we haven't gone back any further on Patrick. He was the 1st chief police constable in Queanbeyan and the Queanbeyan Police of today have been trying to put their family history together & I have given them what I have. Unfortunately we can't work out which Patrick Kinsela is the correct one. I have spoken to qualified historians & history librarians in Canberra and the answer is keep researching.
Something I did come up with was that PK applied to buy land in Queanbeyan (none registered with Dept. lands - Sydney) but in his application it asked how long in the colony and rather than giving a ship or date he said arrived with the late governor. So if that means a governor who has died or he was the one who was replaced ?????

I am a direct descendant of George Loughborough, Ellen (Helen) Loughborough's brother.

George and his wife Elizabeth raised my great grannie, Kate Loughborough.
