Apologies to all if this is mentioned elsewhere, but I have been finding the Wiltshire County Council's Wiltshire Community History site really helpful for understanding the context my ancestors lived in.
They have historical summaries, in some cases quite detailed, and maps of a lot of villages.
The only problem with the site is that its indexes are not complete. I found some excellent information about villages not in the index, but obtainable by using the search box for the location and, say 'history' or 'map'
The introduction page is -

Thank you Angela, what a good link, there is such a lot of detail on the individual Wiltshire Parishes, (though not mine - yet) but what I did find was a comparison of census from 1801 - 2001, interesting to note the decline of inhabitants from in 1831 +1300, to -500 in 2001.

Thanks a lot for the link. Like Newbie my parishes aren't listed as yet but I will be keep checking in to see if and when they are. Certainly a lot of interesting reading.

Hi John
Only a couple of maps so far - but they are continually adding new villages, so it should happen eventually ;D
