Title: Luke Miles - farmer - Rainham/Upchurch
Post by: Georgfriedrich on Sunday 07 June 09 10:14 BST (UK)
Hallo,
I am looking into the family of Luke Miles of the Upchurch/Rainham area.
Apparently he was a farmer.
He may have been married before...
All I know for certain is that his wife was Tamsin and he had at least one child:
Thomasina aka Tamsin Miles 1768-1844 (my ancestress) who later married a mariner named Robert Sunnock/Sunnex (I know nothing of his background)

Luke and Tamsin may have had another child named James Miles.

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Kirk

Hi Kirk

There's an interesting Marriage in Upchurch:

1762 17th Jan By Banns
Luke MILES  Wd of Rainham
Catherine SIMMONS  Wd Otp
Witnesses: Isaac Slater, John Boach

I've got Rainham Baptisms up to 1812, & I've found these for the children of Luke & Tamzen MILES:

1768 20th Nov Tamsen
1770 23rd April Luke
1771 22nd Dec Elizabeth
1773 6th Sep James

So either there's another Luke Miles of Rainham, or the one who married Catherine in 1762 was widowed again & then married Tamzen.

Thanks Betty and Bearkat - that is useful information.  I wonder if there are records for Upchurch burials as well.
Yes I think that my Luke was married twice.

Thank you bearkat,

That's going to be very useful.  Actually the last time I was in Rainham having a poke around the churchyard, we happened to meet one of the ladies doing the flower arrangements and she 'phoned one of the bellringers who came and took us up to the bell loft, and showed us the bell that has Luke Miles name on it.

That was very exciting!

That was very kind of her.  Sometimes you need that bit of good luck when searching for ancestors.
