Help please - With Lilian Mary Ellen Hughes, born in 1886 in Barton-Upon-Irwell, Lancashire. Married Robert Greenough in 1905 in Barton -U-I. Last recorded alive in the 1911 census in South Elmsall with her husband and family.
I can't find her death, either in the GRO registers, local Registry Office registers or Cemetery records for South Elmsall under all variations of the name Greenough and also in the GRO registers under Hughes.
Robert re-married in 1919 and his status on the marriage certificate was that of widower.
I am wondering if she may have changed her surname and her death was registered under her new name.

Hi genie-ologist and welcome to rootschat.
if she changed her surname that would imply divorce wouldn't it?
It wasn't very common in those days.. so there's a puzzle there..

Hi and thanks for your warm welcome to Rootschat.
Robert re-married in Wigan but was living in Yorkshire at the time.
Lilian's age on the 1911 census was 25 yrs.

I was just looking at the census for Lilian previous to her marriage, was she down as an adoptive daughter on the 91 with a family called Hollis, just wondering if this comes into the equation anywhere. Only a thought there is no question of bigamy is there.because divorces were hardly heard of because of the expense sometimes bigamy was committed.

Hi
Lilian is on the 1891 census with her Hughes family in Swinton, Lancashire.
Thanks for the marriage in 1919 Dec Qtr in Yorks. I will follow it up.
No offence taken about the bigamy suggestion. Have thought it a possiblity myself!
Otherwise, I was thinking that perhaps Lilian and Robert had separated and she had taken the name of a new partner without marrying. When she died her death was registered under her new name - before Robert re-married.
Haven't as yet looked into the possibility of divorce as Robert's status on his 2nd marriage is Widower.
