Hello,
I am looking for the parents of an ancestor of mine called Thomas Callow, born in Banbury in 1893.
I have ordered in his Birth Certificate and his parents are James Callow and Annie Elizabeth (then I believe) Tebby.
Their first child according to the census and subsiquent check was born in 1888.
However I can't find a record of her birth in Northampton (the census says Aynho), nor a record for their marriage anywhere.
Has anyone got any suggestions for me as I am unsure where I can look next?
Thanks in advance,
LDB

Hi, Do you have them on earlier census?
If so what was Thomas' occupation?

Hi all :)
The 1891 census* shows a daughter in law (stepdaughter) Agnes Gibbs age 5 born Surrey Croydon. Maybe we should be looging for a Callow/Gibbs marriage.

Do you have Annie in 1881 yet?

In 1871 she's with parents William and Ellen at RG10/1467 57 17 (named Anne Maria)
Shout if you need transcriptions
Edit: I thought she was the one named Anne Maria, but the only Tebby/Gibbs marriage I can see is
Hannah Elizabeth Tebby / William Gibbs, Mar 1884 Brackley, so she must be Hannah Elizabeth age 6 instead
Oops - no idea why I called him William, sorry!

I have them on the 1901 and 1891 Census'.
The birthplace for Annie is a bit more legible on there, thats how I found it was Aynho.
Thomas G Callow is my ancestor, his parents birth and marriages are what i'm looking for. In particular the marriage.
Thanks for the 1881 link Tati, I hadnt got round to looking for that.

i think James may be in Wales in 1881 with wife Elizth
(from memory no longer have page open)
-
James & Annie Elizabeth had their first 2 children Ellen Maria (1888) and James William (1891) baptised at Christchurch, Banbury, their address is given as 1 Cherwell street, there are no other baptisms for their children there though.

Maybe Hannah Elizabeth/Annie E never actually married James Callow because she was technically still married to Oliver Gibbs?
There's an Oliver Gibbs in Croydon in 1891, "married" to a Louisa. Tracing him back, he seems to have been born Oliver Joseph Gibbs, Mar 1863 Woodstock.

Debbbie i think i just kept coming back to that marriage becuase of the surnames
in 1901 they are living at 16 Cherwell street don't know if they moved or the houses were renumbered
Tati oooohh good find did look for a death for him but as i didnt find one didnt post on here
-
Is there anything to suggest that Annie Elizabeth is the same as Hannah Elizabeth, as that bit was very clear on Thomas Callow's Birth Certificate?
In addition the family have very strong links to Cherwell Terrace (formerly in Banbury) and lived at several addresses on that street in subsequent generations aswell.
I am a bit reluctant to focus on this Agnes as I havent seen or heard anything of her before.

According to the IGI online a baptism for:
Anna Elisabeth TEBBY 16th Oct 1864. AYNHO, Northants.
Parents: William & Ellen TEBBY.
Maybe she used the names Anna/Annie/Hannah ???
Devis :)

That certainly fits, thanks Devis
It's quite easy to get Ann (therefore Annie) and Hannah from Anna.
I'll look into it...
-
I've come to the party late on this one.
However I can tell you that the Laura E CALLOW, Sister, 23, born Souldern Oxfordshire on the 1901 census is almost certainly in fact Laura Ellen TEBBY, another daughter of William and Ellen (formerly Robins) TEBBY. The very same William shown in a post above above living with his widowed daughter Annie M KEMSLEY with Agnes A GIBBS as a visitor on the 1901 census. The 1881 census shows a 3 year old Laura Ellen TEBBY, born in Souldern, living with her parents and brothers "near station Aynho."
I would therefore be very inclined to think that "Annie Elizabeth" is probably Hannah Elizabeth as this is additional evidence given that we know Annie M KEMSLEY (formerly TEBBY) is living in Croydon with her widowed father William at this time.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for that,
I admit i'm not 100% which census you're referring to with Laura E Callow/Tebby, but I have come to the conclusion that Annie Kemsley and Annie/Hannah Callow are in fact sisters from the Tebby family and daughters of William.
I also believe that Agnes is in fact Oliver Gibbs' daughter and that for whatever reason him and Hannah separated. I do not believe there was ever a marriage between Hannah and James Callow for that reason, however given his age I havent ruled out the possibility that he may also have been married before. At present however, this mystery remains unsolved.

I'm referring to the 1901 Census as set out in reply #2 higher up the thread.
