Title: 1841 census help please - Love
Post by: Millstream on Wednesday 03 June 09 00:46 BST (UK)
My relative (Philip Lynch) married Rebecca Love in 1863 in Penninghame, Wigtown.

Rebecca was born abt 1834 in Muchrom, Wigtownshire and I have located a Rebecca Love from both the 1851 and 1861 census - the 1861 looks more likely. However I can not locate her on the 1841 census when she would have been around 10 yrs old and obviously with her parents.

Any assistance that can show me what I am missing on searching the 1841 census would be appreciated

Hi Millstream

Nothing jumping out on the 1841 census for her. It would probably help you if you had her parents' names from her 1863 marriage cert.

Millstream,
I couldn't see Rebecca either, though there is a Love family in Muchrom. You should do as Monica suggests and get the marriage cert. You can get some free Scotland's People credits by registering here:

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Monica. In a way I am glad you could not find anything either as I had hit a wall there as all roads/clues were leading to "born abt 1834 in Muchrom, Wigtownshire" and from that I was assuming they should be in the 1841 census.

I will see if I can locate the marriage details from 1863.

Thanks for your assistance and direction

Hi Millstream

I wouldn't at the moment discount that 1851 entry that you have found for Rebecca for 1851 with a slighly earlier birth year of 1830, it may well be that she got younger over the years  ::)

Interesting snippet here which opens up some possibilities for Rebecca:

Maggie Love

On M/C:Domestic servant living at Craiglaw Arms,Kirkcowan. She was illegitimate. She gave her place of birth as Mochrum.Gave he mothers name as Margaret Love. She may have had an illegitimate son Hugh born 1876/7 Mochrum.
1881 Census gave her place of birth as Mochrum.
1891 Census gave her place of birth as Portpatrick.
    Cause of death tuberculosis.
On her death certificate her husband James McKerlie gives her parents as David Love(farmer, deceased) and Rebecca Love m.s not known(not given as deceased).
A Margaret Love was born illegitimate 22Jun1856 Stoneykirk.Mother Rebecca Love.Father not given.
There are two marriages for Rebecca Love to Philip Lynch 14Apr1863 Penninghame and to James Fitzsimons 31Oct1865 Mochrum. From the 1881 Census the Rebecca who married Philip Lynch was born in Mochrum 1834/5.In 1881 she was living in Penninghame.Cannot find the Rebecca who married James Fitzsimons.
I think that when Rebecca was married she gave her daughter Maggie to a relative Margaret Love to raise. There was a Margaret Love living in Mochrum in 1863.When Maggie married in 1880 she had lived in Mochrum for most of he days and had no memory of Stoneykirk. She mistoke Margaret Love for her mother.

This looks to be the above Maggie in 1861:

John Love 60, labourer, b. Ireland
Jane Love 60, b. Ireland
Hugh Love 26, b. Ireland
Elisabeth Love 13, b. Mochrum
Mary Love 7, granddaughter, b. Kirkinner
Margaret Love 5, granddaughter, b. Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire

Address: Mochrum

I found the names of Philip and Rebecca's children intersting as they don't seem to have used the names of Philip's parents for their early born children but maybe some clues on Rebecca's parents' names - all births in Penninghame:

1. JOHN LYNCH  07 JUL 1863
2. JOHN LYNCH  21 AUG 1865
3. ELISABETH LYNCH 18 MAY 1868
4. JAMES LYNCH 01 APR 1870
5. JANE LYNCH 03 FEB 1872

Thanks for your replies. We are just heading off for the long weekend - Queens birthday holiday in Australia - and I will get my mind back around the 'Love family' when we return on Tuesday

We've just been traipsing around Wigtownshire searching for MI's and the like.

We did a quick tour of Mochrum churchyard and, strangely enough, I thought I saw the name Love. It's one of those names/words  that jumps out at you.

Sadly, back home now after one of the best weeks in Scotland for 30 years.

I know what you mean - sometimes you see a name and it just stays in your mind. I would suspect that there would be the 'Love' name in that churchyard as the more research I carry out the more my search is coming back to Mochrum, Penninghame and Wigtown for Philip Lynch and Rebecca Love

Monica

This is interesting as I have Philip and Rebecca Lynch together in the 1901 census - Philip 65 and Rebecca 68 at Clary Hill Wigtownshire.

They are together in 1881 census 45 and 46 yrs at Baltersan farm again in Wigtownshire

Philip is on his own in the 1861, 1851 and 1841 census. All the way through he was a "gamekeeper". Born in Kelton KBT and the rest of the time he comes up in Wigtownshire.

Starting to look involved.

Thanks for all your help

The rootsweb archive seems to have a few connected postings, someone else has been tracing Love families in Wigtownshire. The full census entry for 1951 was posted here which includes Rebecca Love aged 21, an unmarried dairy maid, born mochrum.

The Love family in Mochrum seems to be that of John Love and Rosanna McBratney. It has been nicely summarised in his 1855 death entry from Wigtownshire Pages.

"Love, John 75y - Mochrum - #28 - John LOVE, Pauper, formerly Agricultural Labourer, 75 years. Born in Antrim, Ireland, lived in Mochrum over 50 years. Parents: William LOVE deceased & Catherine CAMPBELL deceased. Married: Rosanna McBRATNEY. Children: Ann, 42. David, 41. Jane, Died at age of 22 in 1838. John, Died at age of 31 in 1850. Rosannah, 35. William, 33.Catharine, 31. Margaret, 29. Agnes, 27. Alexander, 25. James, 25. Died on Oct 21, 9:30am at West Barr, Mochrum, of Catarrh and Chronic Rheumatism, 3weeks. Certified by James McCormick, MD-last saw deceased Oct 17. Buried in Mochrum Churchyard, certified by Alexander Clave, Undertaker. Signed: David LOVE, son. Registered on Oct 23 at Mochrum, D. M. Macfarlane, Registrar."

Rebecca could have been the child of one of the children listed.

Thanks. I will take a look, though I think I did before and couldn't find anything specific to my particular research area.

I agree, this is a great resource. I now have a far better idea of the area and how the different Parishes meld into the larger Wigtownshire as well has a sense of the history and settlement of the area.

Thanks Kirsty, I never gave a thought to going through the Rootweb Archives - we are a bit slow out here in the 'Colony of Australia'. I am now going through the threads you have highlighted as I am finding - with the help of the posters to this thread - that the 'Love name' is reasonably common even when coupled with the surname Lynch.
