This was posted in amongst other things on Kirk Yetholm area message board but I don't want it getting lost so thought I'd post here and see if anyone recognises any names.
I'm trying to find out more about Robert Young:-
Re: Robert Young
OPR Births Channelkirk 1824/1826
Young James, Hind in Netherhouden, and Mary Liddel his wife, had a son born on the 19th day of November 1824 and baptized 23rd January 1825, called Robert Young.
Now all I need to do is find out if Robert lived long enough to marry, have children and die - in that order!
His siblings were:
James (my gg-gf) b.1826 d.1905 m. Ann Shiel
Janet b.1828
Thomas b.1830
Jean b.1832
Mary b.1834
Marion b.1836
Agnes b.1838
Christopher b.1840
William b.1842
George b.1845
Father James, by then a shepherd, (parents Robert Young & Jane Murdoch) died soon after George was born (hence no more children!) unfortunately too soon for a death cert though so no idea where he died etc.
Although they were living at Humbie East Lothian at the time, but a search 5 years ago turned up with nothing on him, no burial located etc & haven't looked since.
Mother Mary (parents James Liddel & Janet Brackenridge) lived to a ripe old age of 96 when she died in Dumfries at her daughter Marions home. Marion married a James McGeorge. I don't know anything more about her.
There is another Robert Young on the printout (which I think my mum got on SP) he was born on 24th July 1826 in Huntershall to Thomas Young (Shepherd) and Joan Whitson. I think I will check Thomas out now as a possible brother to James my gg-gf (parents Robert Young & Jane Murdoch).
If anyone recognises these names or can offer advice then please reply.
I do use Scotland's People and also the IGI and FreeCen.
Our ancestors didn't want to make this too easy for us did they!! Smiley

Hi Templar, many thanks for the info, I think it was you who sent me a pic of the gravestone a while ago, it seems that the stone should be connected to my family as both Young and Breckenridge figure in the line, but I haven't yet confirmed it. Thanks again though and I will look into it as much as I can.
All the best, Elaine

Not sure if this is help or hindrance to you but I have a Marion Young who is my great great grandmother born 1830 in Oldhamstocks. Her parents were Robert and Mary (nee Lothian).
Doesn't look like could be directly connected but may be cousins given the name Marion appears in your line too. Though once you start looking at cousins as well as direct ancestors......

Thanks :) name doesn't ring a bell but will check it out as you never know!! :)

Hi portybelle,
could be connected somewhere along the line, my side were also from East Lothian Prestonkirk, Tranent then Lasswade and Loanhead, we came fromthe Tait's, Bourhil, Wood's and Crookston's, and a multitude of others, I am related to Jackie Crookston who was killed in the Tranent Massacre in 1792.
Are you from Portobello Midlothian ?.
Cheers.
Archie.

From Leith originally but Portobello for the last thirteen years or so.

I was brought up at Coillesdene in Joppa then we moved to up near the Kings Buildings and now at Gilmerton. I loved Portobello a great wee place, I was educated at St. Johns and all my pals went to Portobello high.
My dad and all his family were born at Pipe Street sadly the houses have all gone.
Cheers.
Archie.

Hello Helen, thanks for your message. I have made a mistake - it wasn't Mary that married James McGeorge it was her sister Marion :-[ The information I have is from (mother) Mary's death cert which says she died at 177 High Street, Dumfries and the cert was signed by James McGeorge her son-in-law. Is this the same couple you have researched?

Hi Regarding McGeorge & young Family

Hi Elmca,
This is my family that you are referring to. I have undertaken extensive research on the family and have just commissioned a professional to do more research. The family were Yetholm gypsies.
Robert Young married Margaret Bird and became a policeman. He had many children. Three of whom were born in Melrose, Roxburghshire. He then emigrated with his wife and children to Australia during the 1860s. He initially lived in Tasmania for 4 years and then moved to Rosedale, Victoria, Australia where he lived the rest of his life as a farmer. He was a pioneer of Victoria, Australia. He ran for government and was also a Justice of the Peace. He had many children who went on to marry and have children of their own.
I am a member of Clan Young Australia and have been researching this family for quite some time as a major project. Please get in touch with me so that I can provide you with the research. Good luck with your research.
