Title: Michael Doherty and Grace Quigg
Post by: Regina_D on Monday 01 June 09 22:11 BST (UK)
Looking for info on Michael Doherty and Grace Quigg - Donegal Ireland.  Two children that I know of:  Nicholas b. abt 1888 - 1896 and Cassie living in Brooklyn.  Possibly another sibling Sarah Ann b about 1878.   Nicholas came to NY in 1912 and I know quite a bit about him and a lot about his wife's family (see other posting on Nicholas and Susan Duffy McGrory Doherty.)  But I am really looking for info on his parents and trying to connect his Doherty line to mine.

Any info would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

IGI lists Sarah Anne Doherty born 24 Mar.1878 Co. Donegal.
1911 census for Co. Donegal just released the other day and if the family left Ireland in 1912 you could search for them in that census:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search
Index to civil registrations is now online (also free) on LDS Pilot site (down at the moment but will be back shortly).

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HEADS UP ON THE 1911 CENSUS!!

Found Nicholas in House #27 in Tiryrone, Castlecary, Donegal in 1911 Census with his parents Michael and Grace Doherty and other siblings.   Also found Nicholas's (future) wife on the census with her family......

but still don't know who Michael Doherty's parents were.....that's the missing link.  Michael was such a common Doherty name.....

If the Dohertys were Catholic and married after 1864 (possible as son born c1888) there should be a civil marriage record. If you check the LDS pilot site under 1st Grace Quigg and then 2nd Michael Doherty, then cross-reference for matching index details you'll be able to order their marriage certificate which will give their residences at time of marriage and should have their fathers' names and occupations which will help when searching for other local records, church records, etc. Site is still down but keep checking as it will be back before too long.

It looks like the couple were married in Derry (a lot of Donegal marriages and births were reg. Derry)

DOHERTY MICHAEL QUIGG GRACE 1876 M

From Irishgenealogy.i.e.

Though the Irish pilot search site is back up, I couldn't see a marriage for a Grace Quigg there.  I felt it wasn't behaving properly though.

added--I think it's possible they were married in St Eugenes, hence the civil reg. in Derry.

Not working correctly yet- I searched for any Quiggs in all of Ireland and it came up that nothing was found! Perhaps best to wait until tomorrow and try again.

Thanks for the reference to irishgeneology.i.e      I was NOT aware of that site!   Started looking around and getting hits all over the place!    VERY EXCITING!

Will also check out the LDS pilot site....am not too familiar with it....the few times I tried it, I got zilch.....but will keep checking on it.    I always use the regular LDS site and it's been very helpful (as well as very frustrating when nothing shows up on someone you KNOW existed!!).

I'm still having problems finding my old LDS Pilot page i.e. Irish reg. page.

My original link now seems to take me to a general pilot search page.

Glad you like the Irishgenealogy.i.e.page

I can't find that marriage (1876) on LDS or irishgeneology.i.e

However, I did find the Michael Doherty/Grace Quigg family on the 1901 Census at House #3 Ferryrane, Castlecarey and on the 1911 census at house #27 in Tiryrone, Castlecary.
Michael Doherty was a shoemaker.  Daughters Cassie & Teresa were seamstresses; Son Philip also a shoemaker, other children: Mary Josephine; Nicholas (the one I know a lot about), Patrick, Michael, James Joseph and Rosetta.

Would still like to learn Michael Doherty's parents and possible other siblings so I can make the connection to my tree.

THANK YOU!  I got it now!   For some reason nothing was coming up when I did my pilot searches.  Maybe it's me......but now I can order the tape from LDS
and get the parents names.    THANK YOU SO MUCH for sending the direct link.
And I see what was meant when you said to search once for Grace Quigg Marriage and then 2nd for Michael and crosss reference the Film Nos, page and volume.....Enlightened I am!   THANKS!

Irish marriage certificates will only list fathers' names and occupations.
Not sure what you mean by ordering the film from LDS- there are 2 sorts of films- the microfilmed index and the microfilmed registers (which show the actual details).

I meant the mormom family search site and the microfilm of the actual details - I realize I already have the details from the index.  THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
