Title: WAYBRANT, Isabella (Brogan) - Ontario
Post by: ssc1958 on Sunday 31 May 09 04:48 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm trying to validate that my g grandfather was married prior to marrying my g grandmother in 1880.  One of the potentials is Isabella Brogan Waybrant.  I have found a marriage record for Isabella Brogan and Hezekiah Waybrant on 21 Dec 1864 in Waterloo, ON.   I have also found birth certs for William, Ann, John and Margaret Waybrant with parents Isabella and Hezekiah.

In the 1881 Census I have found a record for these same Waybrant children living with Isabelle's parents in  Dumfries North, Waterloo South, Ontario.  The census record also identifies another child  Charles.  In my searching so far I have not been able to find a death cert for Isabella.  I cannot find a census record for either Hezekiah, Isabella or my ggrandmother in 1881.

I've searched ancestry.ca, OCFA, and various other internet resources without success.  I would welcome any other suggestions as to how I can determine whether Isabella is an actual ancestor.

Regards,

SSC

I found a possible re-marriage for Hezekiah Waybrant although the name of his mother doesn't match the entry from his marriage to Isabella (perhaps his mother's name was Catherine Ann or Ann Catherine and she went by both names or, if the record you found was the one transcribed by Genealogical Research Library at Ancestry, her name was mistranscribed as his surname was). Here's the entry from the Ontario marriage database:

Henry Waybrant, 35, widower, machinist, born New Brunswick, son of Philip and Ann Waybrant married Eliza Stone, 20, born Nanticoke, daughter of Timothy and Mary Ann Stone on 3 Feb 1880 in Woodstock, Oxford County, Ontario.

The reason I think it is possibly him is he is listed as Henry Hezekiah Waybrant on the birth registration for one of his children with Isabella. There are birth registrations for children of the above marriage and on one of them he is listed as Henry Hezekiah Waybrant. Also in the 1871 Ontario census database Hezekiah H. Waybrandt in Dumfries North, Waterloo South is listed as a machinist.

Also, there is a 1891 census entry in Hamilton that has Henry and Eliza Waybrant listed with three children (Ettie, Alx, Minnie), then a lodger and then a Maggie Waybrant, daughter, 18 in the same household. That Maggie is the right age to be Margaret, his daughter with Isabella.

There is a Henry Waybrant who died in Hamilton on 30 Apr 1894 from Tuberculosis and Eliza re-married in Sep 1894 to John Smith.

Thank you very much Jacquie!  I know that the marriage record to Eliza Stone is accurate as she is my great grandmother.  I suspect that Henry Hezekiah and Hezekiah H are in fact the same person as well but I'm not sure how I can prove or disprove that theory.

I did find a records on another tree and some in LDS that show a Philip Waybrant married to a  Catherine Matheson and to Ann Splan.  This could make sense if at different points in time he identified his mother based on who his father was married to at the time.

Would you have any suggestions as to next steps that I could take prove they are the same person?

It's too bad that death registrations from the time period of the one for Henry Waybrant don't include the names of parents.

I've seen some family trees for a Philip Waybrant with wives named Ann Splan Catherine Matheson and Kay Britten. It seems like they are saying that Kay Britten and Catherine Matheson were the same person. They have no marriage or children listed for Catherine but a marriage date of 1839 for Kay and Philip and, of the trees that include Hezekiah, he is listed in with the children of Kay.

I'm not sure what to suggest. This may be a case where you have to go by the preponderance of the evidence. Perhaps posting the supposition on a Waybrant forum will generate some clues.

That's a good suggestion Jacquie.  I'll do that.

Thank you very much for your help :)

There are very few of Waybrant surname...nor is there any residual information on the surname in the N.S. genealogy database for more recent data...

an extracted file from IGI has this couple, as you likely know... :
PHILLIP WEYBRANT & ANN INGRAM- Married July 7th 1813, Saint George, Sydney, C B , N S
 http://www.rootschat.com/links/06nb/
(Ann is said to be daughter of pioneers Hezekiah Ingraham and Sarah Cone or Wood  ::))
ADDED: http://heritageregistry.net/html.pages/grpf04903.html ADDED: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ingraham/messages/958.html
Their son Philip is with wife Ann in Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan / Film   1254576   NA T9-0576   p. 187B

There only seems to be one Philip of the correct age who could be his father...The first marriage as jacquie said is purported to be Kay or Catherine...

There is an IGI extracted file for a marriage of his sister to Alexander Kay ( Key)
Armina A. Waybrant  ( Philip & Catherine) of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
March 30 1863, Bruce, Ontario
Husband age:24
Wife age:18

This site says Kay & Catherine were 2 seperate marriages...oh, bother!  :)

Weybrant is also the spelling used here...1820 land record
McKinnon, John...Petition to Stewart: Petitioner, age 21, single, a native of Scotland, has lived five years in Cape Breton. He asks a lot on the north-west side of the south-west branch of the Margarie River, a lot formerly occupied by Philip Weybrant who has settled elsewhere.

I know it doesn't deal with the query...but other children and father of Hezakiah Ingraham. Timothy Ingraham of Hartford, Conn., U. S. A.    http://www.electricscotland.com/canada/inverness/chapter30.htm
also mentions husbands of Ann & Sarah..aunts of your Hezekiah Weybrant
and HezaKiah was first J.P of Margaree   http://www.capebretongenweb.com/cbloyalf.html

and this must be the connection to the Matheson info:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NS-CAPE-BRETON/2001-01/0979244370
It seems that Philip Sr. had a second wife as well, Margaret Kemp... :D

and just to throw a wrench into the works...Clara & her Twin Phillip born 1878 Sault Sainte Marie Michigan were in an extracted file with mother as Margaret!!! were they born to the brother of your Hezakiah, Philip? or are they half siblings? Clara seems to be on the 1881 with the family noted above...

nevermind just saw her marriage with Ann Splan as mother...

One thing that you can do to help put your mind to rest re: the 2 Henry Hezakiahs...( as you are sure that the one in Hamilton is yours)  to see if the Hezekiah buried in the Ayr Village cemetery is indeed the man born in Nova Scotia circa 1843...and find out the date of death as well...
he may also be a child of theirs... write to the cemetery and see what they answer...
can't hurt...

Thanks JJ,

Someone has volunteered to get the information from both cemetaries for me this summer.  Hopefully that will help me eliminate one of them.

Update:  I’ve been searching for quite a while.  I’m convinced that my Henry Hezekiah Waybrant is indeed the same person as Hezekiah Waybrant who married Isabella Brogan.  It only took a trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City Utah to lead me onto the right path.

I found a reference to Waybrants in the Local History Book “Toil, Tears & Truimph- a History of Kincardine Township. p240”.  This source identified that Philip Waybrant, a mechanic first came from Cape Breton to Kincardine Twp in 1854 and that he had been married twice with a total of 13 children.  Hezekiah, Armenia, Alexander, Mary, Philip, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, William, John, Henry, Catherine, Rueben and Esther.

I then validated that Ayr is in or near Kincardine Twp.  I found the cemetery transcriptions at FHL for Ayr Cemetary and found the following cemetery plots purchased by Hezekiah Waybrant:

Brogau[Brogan], Mrs. John, Mother in law
Brogau[Brogan], 75, Father in law
Waybrant, Alexander, son
Waybrant, Maisy Ann, daughter
Waybrant, John Phillip, 27, son
Waybrant, William, son
Waybrant, Charles Harvey, 10, son
Waybrant, Isabella Brogu[Brogan], 35, wife

Subsequent searching of birth records for the children mentioned here turned up the registration for John Phillip.  The parents on this record identify the father as “Henry Hezekiah Waybrant” and “Isabella Brogan”.  Yippee ki aye!!! :D

Here’s the family I have confirmed now:

Henry Hezekiah Waybrant (b. abt 1842 – d 1894) married Isabella Brogan (b.1842, Ireland-d 15 June 1879, Ayr, ON)

Their children are:
William Waybrant (b. abt 1865, ON)
Anna B. Waybrant (b. abt 1869, ON)
John Phillip Waybrant (b 15 May 1870, North Dumfries, Waterloo, ON)
Margaret (Maggie) Waybrant (b. abt 1873, ON)
Henry Hezekiah Waybrant (b. 26 Aug 1875, North Dumfries, Waterloo, ON)
Charles Harvey Waybrant (b. abt 1876, ON) died 8 Mar 1886, Ayr, Waterloo, ON
Alexander Waybrant (b. 20 Aug 1877, Ayr, North Dumfries, Waterloo, ON) died 31 Dec 1877, Ayr, ON
Maisy Ann Waybrant (b. Apr 1879) died Aug 1879

Henry Hezekiah Waybrant married Eliza Ann Stone (b. 6 Jan 1862, Nanticoke, ON – died 21 Mar 1922, Hamilton, ON)

Children all born in Hamilton are:
   Henry J. Waybrant (1881 – 1883)
   Robert Waybrant (twin) (1884 – 1884)
   James Waybrant (twin) (1884-1884)
   Henrietta Waybrant (1885 - )
   Almer Alexander Waybrant (1887 – )
   Minnie Waybrant (1889 - )
   Eliza Waybrant (1891- 1891)

Thank you JJ, Jacquie and vbain for all the assistance and links.

Regards,
SSC
